Description

With zero emissions, lower noise, and considerably less maintenance, the 36V (18V X2) LXT® Brushless Earth Auger (XGD01Z, tool only) is a welcome solution for landscapers. The earth auger provides high-performance digging with even and consistent holes. It is ideal for post-hole digging, fence installation, large planting jobs, soil sampling, and construction projects. The Makita- built brushless motor delivers power equivalent to a 36cc gas earth auger. The XGD01Z can drill holes up to 8” wide and 41” deep. The extension bar, auger bit and blades are sold separately. There are 2 speed options (0-350 RPM, 0-1,400 RPM) to manage power and run time. A reverse switch clears the earth auger bit from high-resistance soil. Other features include built-in L.E.D. light illuminates the work area, Automatic Speed Change to adjust drill speed and torque during drilling, and a torque limiter, which is a built-in clutch that reduces gear damage by disengaging gears if the bit binds. It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V LXT System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita® 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls™. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita® 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion Batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

  • a life changer
I have been super impressed with the entire line of makita x2 18v tools. The string and hedge trimmer seem so simple in both function and power demand to this product though. I told a buddy this would either be the worst product I ever bought or one of the best. it is definitely one of the best. Living in an area with very rocky soil, I was skeptical. over the last 8 months of use and digging both 6” and 8” holes, I have gone from skeptic to supporter. I am convinced in a perfect world there are no carburetors…all my battery tools get me one step closer. when looking at other augers I could get one that would attach to my tractor, one with a separate power unit, or a top mounted engine. Now a lot of the decision making requires knowledge of what size holes you dig and the frequency. For me the tractor unit could not always access where I need to go, the separate power unit more money than the number of holes I dig is worth. So between this unit and a top mounted motor, hands down the makita unit will win every time. Whether judging it based on noise, weight, convenience and trusting it to work every time - makita wins. To dig larger/wider holes the motor gets bigger and bigger (noisier and heavier). Frankly, your back to one of the other types of units. No auger is going to chew threw a large stone or oak tree root, so where this unit fails probably most fail. What I have seen is that this unit has not had a problem that couldn’t be overcome. yes maybe the sawzall is needed to cut a root or a shovel to move a rock - but it has done everything I have asked of it. I am very pleased with this purchase and would definitely buy it again. ... show more

  • Don’t hesitate
I was skeptical but I’ve been nothing but impressed. There are a lot of features that I hadn’t considered. Low vibration so you can “feel” where you’re digging. My buddy was helping me put up a fence and hit an unmarked 4” pvc pipe but because he could feel it he stopped it and didn’t even scratch the pipe. On top of this the bit stops spinning when you let go of the trigger so you have more control. The reverse is a nice feature. It’s as quiet as using a drill. If you wanted to go into back country and build a pole building you could carry this thing on your back and never miss a step because of weight and dimensions. Haven’t used it this way yet, but you could unchuck the auger adapter bit and throw in a drill bit if you really need some extra butt. ... show more

  • Awesome power head.
This thing works great with the matching Makita 4" auger bit sold by Amazon. Blasts through our hard-pan clay soil with ease. I'm only making shallow holes but the power head never slows down (the bit progresses more slowly thorough the hardest sections, but is still faster than others I've used, and I've never felt the need to put any weight on the machine to penetrate the soil.) Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Beast Mode
This thing is a monster. Using a 4" auger to set 2-3/8" steel posts and t-posts in desert caliche. It eats caliche for breakfast and never backs down unless it hits a big rock. Saves so much work it pays for it's self day one.

  • Good luck getting an exchange or refund
I made this purchase barely 5 months ago, and the auger has been great to work with during that very short time, but has recently stopped working altogether. I've already verified that the fault is NOT with the batteries, but the auger itself is defective. The response from the 3rd party seller was very lame, & I've even called them directly only to be told that the person that normally handles their returns is on vacation until next week. They wont even send a replacement. All that they are willing to do is refund me the purchase only after I send them the defective tool, after which I would have to re-purchase a new one from elsewhere. That could take anywhere from a month or longer before I have in my possession a working tool. I am a contractor, and find this completely unacceptable. As such, I will NEVER purchase another tool through Amazon again. Why bother? Its much easier to deal with a local Home Depot or another local outlet. As for myself, I've contacted Makita directly, and have already sent out the tool on the same day, to a factory outlet in my part of the state, and do expect to receive my tool in working condition within the next 10 days or so. I would strongly recommend purchasing from a local physical outlet, as Amazon will not take responsibility for their choice of "3rd party" vendors. ... show more

  • Portable and Capable.
This planting auger is very capable. I have been using it for digging post holes, mixing cement, and also for plantings. I find it to be easy to move around the site, and quite capable of making big holes.

  • Absolute beast
The media could not be loaded. There’s a reason makita doesn’t really need to advertise, and here’s why, powerful, smooth and surprisingly quiet. MAKITA FOR LIFE!!

  • The future is here
How can it get better than this ? It's powerful, quiet, no maintenance and relatively light. I like that it has reverse in case I ever need to get it unstuck. I use a 4 inch auger bit to do pilot holes for fences and add water, let it soak in, then I use a clam type post hole digger to make accurate 8 inch holes by hand. What a time saver this way, because the undersize pilot hole and water allow me to remove rocks that I encounter and still keep my 8 inch diameter holes in perfect alignment. ... show more
