A few years back, I bought a little Earthwise saw, and I have NOT been impressed with it. It barely could do more than pruning. So I was a tad skeptical about getting another battery powered saw. But I figured maybe tech had advanced.. so I watched several YouTube videos, and one in particular did a head to head with this saw against a similarly sized gas saw, and this Makita came out on top. The next thing I was not sure about is if my current 18V Makita batteries would work. The one that comes with features 5Ah batteries, and mine are 3Ah. But given the significant cost difference, I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm happy to report the 18V 3Ah work fine (BL 1830B) with this saw. I figured they should--just won't last as long. I've been going electric for some time, and I've found I dislike having lots of different chargers and batteries, so I'm glad Makita offers this with their normal 18V. I took 'er out for a spin yesterday, and made quick work of about an 8" tree (at least the bottom half of it). It prunes off the branches like they're not there, and it slices through the trunk in no time. I'm very impressed! And when I took it back, it still showed full charge on the meter. I imagine it'd last a good bit, at least enough for the periodical jobs I have. I'd also mention that I recently had a professional tree guy do some vista clearing, and he was using a battery powered saw, so I guess even the pros are switching. No doubt there are limits, but hey, hard to beat less maintenance, not messing with fuel and mixing oil, less noise, and so forth. Speaking of noise, it's not bad at all. I don't feel I need ear protection, though maybe if I did it all day I'd feel differently. Note that the tool (as you might expect) comes bone dry in terms of blade oil, so be sure you have that on hand. The opening is big enough you can fill without a funnel, which is nice given how viscous that stuff is. It's very easy to install the chain/bar. No tools required. Lastly, about weight, it's not what Iid call light, especially with the batteries on board, but it's not uncomfortably heavy to me, either. Having some "meat" behind that power is a good thing, anyways, to help keep things stable. I've only had it a short time, but I'm very happy and impressed. Definitely recommend, particularly if you already have the 18V Makita batteries. ... show more

This thing does a lot work. I never thought I would give up my 2 stroke chainsaw for a cordless, but this this works really well. Top-quality, exactly what I have come to expect from Makita. Even with the two batteries installed it is fairly light weight and has decent power. Battery life is good and it is easy to clean with the tool-less bar fastener. I bought this as an alternative to replacing a long time Husqvarna 2 cycle saw, and it was great, until hurricane IDA, which left 10 full size trees down to be cut up. For that, I had to purchase an Echo CS3510, which handled the heavy duty cutting of very large and sometime cracked wood. The Makita was excellent as a companion to the Echo, and was perfect for cutting up limbs, including some up to 10". It is also perfect when you need to stop and start cutting in between other activities, since it is instant start and no idling. It's limitations are that it will stop if it senses irregular cutting surfaces and if cutting too much at once. This is probably to protect the saw from damage, but does mean you may want to consider staying with 2-cycle for really heavy duty work. For most other common wood cutting, however, it is great to just be able to pick up the saw and cut what you need and put it away, with no starting or fuel mixing. ... show more

From an electric saw standpoint, this checks all the boxes. Batteries last about as long as the competition. Power is quite good. Can easily get through cuts larger than 16". But know what you are buying. This machine, even with numerous batteries, isn't going to be cutting continuously for hours. A had a large downed hardwood tree that needed removed and it would take about 20 sets of batteries to get through the thing. Granted it's a massive tree, but that job required a gas chain saw. That said, I LOVE this thing for intermediate use jobs. And it excels at those. Love that I don't have to clean carbs, etc. Starts every time (duh) and no issues. ... show more

Wow this thing is impressively aggressive and quiet. I am attempting to post a video of this saw easily cutting up a large 16”+ red oak tree trunk that was leaning over our trail.

In the end, its whatever brand tool/batteries you start with, because you don't want multiple batteries and chargers. I've had Makita electric power tools since the 80s and still work like a champ. Moved to 18V 3A Battery tools in mid 2000's for hand tools and still use them today. I'm not a contractor, but a constant DIYer. The 3A hand tools (Circ saw, Drill, Reciprocating saw, powerdriver) still work great and the batteries last. This year I finally converted my gas yard tools to battery. Chain saw, String trimmer, Blower, hedge trimmer use the 18V 5A batteries (for longer run time) The chain saw and blower use 2 5A 18V batteries for 36V. Really happy with all of them so far. Surprisingly, plenty of power! The 36V tools are a little heavier that their gas counterparts, but the convenience far outweighs the weight. No More mixing and managing 40:1 and 50:1 gas/oil mixes. Priming, idle adjustment and cold starting... I did keep a Back Pack Blower for leaves in the fall. Heavily wooded property with LOTS of Oak leaves. I need 3-5 hours of run-time (2-3 fill ups of gas tank). It would be doable with 2 sets of batteries, but a battery management exercise. I'd estimate 1 hour of run time when using the blower at higher rpms needed for heavy leaves. One small nit on the blower is that the air intake is in the back of the unit so it tends to "grab" clothing when you swing it in front of your shirt or shorts. The chainsaw is more like 15 mins of pure run time (it doesn't idle so that's cutting time) and batteries get hot so you have to let them cool before recharging. Fine for limbing and smaller jobs, but If you're going to fell a big tree and cut it up, keep the 18" or better gas saw. ... show more

I love Makita tools and I love battery-operated tools (I have many of them). That said, I'm a little disappointed with this chainsaw. I had a Stihl chain saw for 30 years and never threw a chain. So far, I've thrown three chains with the Makita in just four days of use - keeping the chain much tighter than my old Stihl. I've tried three different chains, because they all fail once you throw one, and anything other than a perfect straight cut will spill the chain. This saw is nice and quiet and I'll use it for very light work, but it's nothing like my old gas powered Stihl saw. ... show more
