  • This is a great stereo system
I bought this for the bass. This stereo system delivered. I can't turn the volume up cause I live in close proximity to other people in a rental. It has a knob for balance between speakers, a knob for treble, a knob for bass, and a knob for volume. It has Bluetooth that I like using. It plays CDs but u have to be careful putting something on top of it cause it is easy to make skip during play. It plays FM radio too. I guess it's about average about picking up radio stations, not the best I ever had for that, but it's doable. Overall I would recommend this stereo system if you're more hands on cause it doesn't come with a remote. ... show more

  • Great system
Bought this for my son for Christmas! He wanted to set it up to stream his TV through it as well. I am very surprised at the sound quality. It is really good. We even moved it to the living room to watch Stranger Things on New Year’s Eve. The sound quality was great in that space as well.

  • Some defects but good for the price
The first unit I received was returned because the left VU meter was dead and the clock could not be reset according to the manual. The second unit was shipped by Amazon immediately. Everything worked fine except the clock--still no reset. But there is a way to set the clock accurately. This procedure can only be done one time per day! Wait until a minute before midnight. When the clock strikes twelve unplug the unit and plug it back in and turn it on. The clock is set and will function perfectly until the next power failure or unplugging. Many thanks to our eastern friends who seem to have no concern for quality control. ... show more

  • THE CD PLAYER FUNCTION DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL. THERE IS ONLY STATIC. WE CHECKED THE SPEAKERS.
THIS MACHINE IS VERY DISAPPOINTING. The cd FUNCTION DOESN'T WORK. We checked the speakers, etc. Everything works except the CD player, the only reason I bought it .I like the bells and whistles. It's too bad it doesn't work. Not worth trying to replace. It's becoming harder to buy a simple cd player. Not worth trying to replace. I should have known at this price it was too good to be true. ... show more

  • Great sound little package
Sounds great! Bought it as a gift for my dad. He really enjoys listening to his old CDs. It's got some nice sound to it for the size.

  • A cheap stereo that looks like an expensive stereo
This Magnavox shelf stereo is very similar to an Innovative Technology stereo that has been available for a few years. They're about the same size, price, and have a similar range of capabilities. I live in an apartment and have been listening exclusively to all-in-one systems for a number of years. While some of these sound quite good, none of those give me the stereo separation that truly separate speakers can. That's why I finally decided to put up with the wires and multiple pieces for this one. It is quite affordable, and it looks nice, and it boasts a lot of features that are becoming rare in low-end systems. For example, it gives you actual treble and bass control knobs, instead of making you cycle through pre-programmed EQ settings. I also like that the CD player is a tray, not a slot-in. In my experience, slot-in CD players are the first to wear down, whereas tray CD players have last me essentially forever. Slot-in CD players also heat up the disc over time; this one can play a 70 minute CD all the way through and the disc comes out nice and cool at the end. At 50 watts, I never need to move the volume above 20%. The volume knob itself has a mark carved in it so you can see your setting - but the knob itself can turn all the way around, which means the actual volume level can become separated from what the knob looks like it's at. This is especially true if you use the remote to change the volume, which does not cause the physical knob to turn. It won't be long before you need to recalibrate the volume knob by turning it to a certain spot and then using the remote to set the volume at the level you want at that spot. The bass and treble knobs both have catch-spots at the top so you can feel when they are set exactly neutral. The amount of boost and cut you get from them isn't very much - parametric EQ this ain't. FM radio reception is okay for me - there's almost always a low level of static even when the radio signal is strong. Furthermore, the processing on the radio is "slow". I sometimes have radios on in multiple rooms if I'm moving back and forth. With previous radios, it just meant they were all playing at once. This one however lags behind other radios, creating an echo effect. The speakers are very treble-heavy. This does appear to be improving as the speakers break in over time, but if you are someone who wants "big bass", this ain't it. Nor is there a subwoofer output. There are things you can do to artificially boost the amount of low end reaching your ears, such as placing the speakers on the floor or in an enclosure. The emphasis on high frequencies does mean that everything sounds very clear, so if you're using this as a TV speaker, you'll get good results (especially if you're mostly watching talk like the news). It also means that you can hear what's going on in music pretty well at even at low volume. One of the speakers came with the wire pushed in too far, preventing the wire from connecting with the speaker input. I thought at first something was wrong with it until I realized I had to pull the wire out of the speaker by about a millimeter. The most annoying thing about this stereo overall is that there is a high-pitched whine that is always coming out of the speakers when it's on. It's almost at dog-whistle frequency levels, but once I noticed it, I cannot un-notice it. Higher-quality stereos I've owned in the past had a groundwire that made the speakers completely silent when nothing was coming out of them, but this unit doesn't have that. It's possible that replacing the speaker wire might fix this, but I'm considering putting an entirely different pair of speakers on this anyway. All in all, listening to music over bluetooth and on CD is quite pleasant, especially with the stereo image that I haven't gotten from all-in-one systems. I am happy enough with this that I will not be returning it, but I do not plan to make it my primary stereo long-term. It'll be a good backup/secondary system. ... show more

  • Sounds horrible because of cheap speakers. NO LOUD VOLUME!
I love the stand alone speakers. One pice expensive b*** systems can never sound as good. Their volume is not large enough to push sound and you don't want a speaker made of sound reverbing plastic. I replaced the speakers with a pair of bookshelf Pinical speakers that I wasn't using. I'm so happy, it sounds great! And i can now enjoy louder music because of better speakers! I love the old school knobs on front and speaker output meters are a lot of fun. My problem is that the knobs are so low on the unit that when u try to adjust, your knuckles bang into table top, you can't pinch and turn. Volume knob should be larger and much easier to use. Can't turn without pinching, turning 1/4 turn, then repeat several times. But i do like the unit because it sounds good with new speakers and it's the best deal under several hundred dollars. ... show more
