Description

This traditional concert uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. Those designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin, with strongly geometric patterns, and many shapes and symbols inspired by the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. Our design is primarily based on waves and sharks teeth which are also echoed as fret markers. The electric model adds the advantage of an onboard preamp. • Wonderfully Resonant Ukulele
I settled on the Luna Tattoo Tenor after a lot of deliberation and research. I also have an Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert (another fantastic uke), and while that is truer to the Hawaiian sound, I was on the look out for a deeper sound. My other options were the Gretsch G9120 and Kala TEM. However, in sound tests on review sites, Luna TT came out as a winner with a deeper resonance - which was perfect for me. So I took the leap of faith and ordered one, to be delivered to India, which is where I live. The ukulele reached me in a week - a pleasant surprise. I had paid the import duty deposit, so all I had to do was receive my package. It was well packed and was super exciting to unbox it. The Luna TT is a beautiful instrument. It's engraved with traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. It has a lovely matt finish. Feels very well weighed and rests comfortably in my hands. It's a showy ukulele, with a mature feel. The sound box seems to be marginally larger than other tenors. The color of the fretboard is lighter than the one in the picture, there is a lighter gradient on mine - it's pleasing. It's pre-strung with Aquila Nylgut, definitely the best strings in the market. The intonation is rich, closer to a classical guitar, and still on the same sweet spectrum as a traditional ukulele. The sound is definitely loud, and it responds very well to strumming and plucking. The frets are distanced just right for my fingers. That's one of the things I was looking out for in a tenor uke. While my OU5 has a lovely sound too, my relatively large fingers felt constrained while playing melody bits. The Luna TT handles that just fine. Overall, I highly recommend the Luna TT. It's an excellent instrument for intermediate to advanced players. Very versatile and absolutely gorgeous to look at. The price is just right in the under $200 range. A hurrah too for Amazon's service to overseas customers. ... show more

  • Big sound from a small box
I have to say that I am impressed by this ukulele and the setup it arrived with. I ordered 4 ukuleles to compare and this was the one we kept. I originally ordered a Cordoba 15TM (looked great, felt nice in the hands, seemed well constructed however sounded very thin and had a fret buzz), a Kala KA-T (looked good, felt good in the hands, louder and fuller than the Cordoba however had a nasty fret buzz on the C string from open position to the 3rd fret) a Kala KA-TEM (looked cheap to me from the wood to the black painted bindings, actually sounded pretty good though) and this Luna. Just a very cool design and played great out of the box. Bigger sound than the Cordoba 15TM and both Kalas plus the frets on this particular one was better than the Kala I received as well. I like that it doesn’t have the cheap painted rosette or binding like some do in this price range. I did a blind sound test with them all and everyone said this one was the fullest and loudest of the bunch. I know things like strings, nut/saddle material, set up and many other factors can effect them all, however I was purely judging how each sounded and felt straight from the seller into my hands. We have 2 other Kalas in the house from the past that are great instruments, Luna just came out on top for us this round. Not too expensive and when we’re not playing, it makes great wall art. It came with a decent gig bag, it’s sturdy just not well padded. I will update if things change. ... show more

  • Big bang for your buck with this Luna Tattoo Tenor
I really wanted to add a tenor size ukulele to my collection of ukes and I didn't want to break the bank. I bought 2 other brands and ended up returning them because I just didn't like them. I was about to give up, but hoped 3rd time would be a charm and it certainly was! I had heard good things about the Luna brand and I liked the look of the Tattoo and it had good reviews. It came right on schedule, packed well and looked great when I opened the box. I am a fan of Aquila strings and was please that the Luna Tattoo came with them. I tuned it up and it played great! Took about 3 days for the strings to hold the tune and I cannot put it down! It has a nice mellow sound and there is no buzzing or odd sounds coming from the strings. It is very light and fits nice in your hands. Because I had the other 2 which I sent back, to me this tenor feels a little bit smaller, but I may be wrong. If you are looking for a great uke at a great price do not hesitate on this brand. You will be very pleased with your purchase. ... show more
