I haven't used a metal detector since I was a kid and thought this Vietora Eud detector would be a good starter. It's a very budget build but is has two adjustments to filter out junk, and a great guide to metal detecting. It is a good starting point to decide whether you really need to upgrade to something more elaborate. It would be great for a child. It was reasonably easy to assemble. Operation is very simple, just power on, and set the "elimination" to filter out lesser metals, and depth. It makes different beeps for different detected things, to some degree. I am tall and had to extend the tube all the way. I didn't really have to stoop over though it was about the limit it could handle. I tested it by buying various coins under some dirt. It didn't detect that deep, maybe 6" at most. It did detect various metals, including Au and Ag. I ran it inside on our floor (concrete slab) and it was apparently detecting the rebar and pipes underneath, which could be useful for locating things. The instructions include a many-page metal-detecting guide, covering basic terminology, how detecting works, and how to use the detector. From someone who's never done metal detecting, there's a lot of useful information there to get started and use proper scanning technique. It takes TWO alkaline 9V batteries which last 20 hours (I measured 27mA draw when operating). This can be a little pricey to operate. It would have been nice to take AA batteries. I assume 9V simplified the design but modern design could easily work off other battery types. When off it doesn't drain batteries (<0.01uA) so they don't need to be removed between uses.
