  • It does what it’s supposed to do
Style: UBK90 - 4K Blu-Ray Player
First off, the picture is fantastic. I use upgraded HDMI cables through a sound bar to my LG brand TV and have watched DVDs, BluRay and 4K discs and can’t complain about the picture quality. The player also has an audio only HDMI out so if I decide to connect through my Onkyo stereo (rather than use the sound bar) I have that option. It is nice to be able to view my old DVDs without having to connect a separate player as I did with my old machine. The player does not have any sort of screen saver, so if you walk out of the room with a disc on pause, the picture will still be there no matter how long you’re gone from the room. This could be a problem with some TVs. It also has no memory - I had to go through the menu every time I returned to the disc after turning the machine off (watching a multipart series). It did recover after a power glitch, however. Nothing special about the remote, it is not very ‘intuitive’, doesn’t have a great feel, and it needs to be aimed directly at the player. The TV controls at the bottom do work with my LG TV with no additional setup which is convenient. In the setup, I turned on the English subtitles. I’m not sure what this was supposed to accomplish as I have had to turn them on for every disc I have watched. Oh, and the background screen is amazingly bright white, which will light up the room and get your attention if nothing else if you have a larger TV, especially in a darkened room. Overall, it’s does what it’s supposed to do, it plays discs, and does a good job of it. Just make sure your discs are clean as the player is very unforgiving of the tiniest smudge and will hang/skip when it finds one on the disc, and if you pop the disc out to clean it - you get to find you place by going through the setup and menu… again. ... show more

  • Great starter player for 4K
Style: UBK90 - 4K Blu-Ray Player
The bottom line on this, IMHO, is that it is a good starter 4K disc player with very good upscaling of blu ray and DVD, especially blu ray. It is not a $1000 4K disc player. It is not a $500 disc player. Regarding compatibility with a 4K TV, I can only speak about my experience with my large QLED samsung TV. I had trouble with dark scenes looking good through this player, even after using the Disney blu ray calibration disc. Otherwise, Ready Player One 4k looks great. Guardians of the Galaxy blu ray is superb. Star Wars Episode V DVD upscales very, very nicely. But every dark scene in my setup just looks so muted. This player seemed to do fine with sending Atmos and 5.1 surround sound tracks to my sound system, so no complaints from my ears, but perhaps there is more out there. I suspect this player with some TVs will simply be spectacular. With others, maybe not so great. At a price of about $100 (I paid a little over this), it can get you going. I have owned mine for roughly one year, and I have concluded I need to try another player. The mid range Panasonic just went on sale, so I will try that one. I will have to update my review in a month or so with comparison notes. --------------- Update I stand by my statement that this is an excellent starting 4K disc player, and still think this will perform awesome with some TVs. I will now compare to the Panasonic UB820. The Panasonic wins on HDR features. Easily adjusts my picture brightness, noticeably so, and that made me super happy (see above comments). The LG wins on audio setup with my equipment, using a Samsung atmos soundbar and no receiver. The less expensive LG for whatever reason could pass atmos and picture flawlessly through the ARC and back. With the Panasonic, I went through many iterations of setup before compromising on optical audio between the QLED TV and soundbar & having confirmed atmos on a direct HDMI from the disc player to the soundbar. I had to have atmos from the discs, and having the picture and sound together is just so enjoyable. 5.1 Dolby digital from other sources (Roku, antenna, gaming) was acceptable to me. Netflix is available on both disc players and both have better Netflix picture and audio than through my Roku Premiere (all equally connected by ethernet), but my Roku remains my go-to streamer. ... show more

  • Good DVD Player but it will not allow you to add other streaming services.
Style: UBK90 - 4K Blu-Ray Player
The only negative comment I have is that we wanted to add Prime Video to the premium streaming and there was no way to do that.

  • It’s a great 4K Blu Ray player for disc playback; Just not for streaming and USB playback.
Style: UBK90 - 4K Blu-Ray Player
I was deciding on if I should get the LG UBK90 or the Sony X800M2. I had decided on the LG because I have a LG OLED TV, Soundbar, and I heard great reviews about this player. I tried to play two .mkv 4K HDR files with this player and they won’t play. The player attempts to play a .mkv file from my USB drive, while the red circle rolls around, and it gives me an error message; “Cannot play this file.” My X Box One X plays 4K HDR .mkv files without a problem. Also, the YouTube and Netflix apps on this player are unreliable. Dolby Atmos is not supported when you play a Netflix movie or show. It will output the audio signal to Dolby Audio standard not Dolby Atmos. I would recommend anyone not use this player as a streaming device. I hope LG comes out with an update to fix these issues. If anyone knows what can be done to fix these issues reply with a comment thank you! Overall, it’s a great 4K Blu Ray player. The picture quality is outstanding, there are some picture enhancement options to improve your picture when you play a movie in HDR. It doesn’t have that same feature when you’re playing content in Dolby Vision. This player is great for 4K HDR Dolby Vision disc playback; just not for streaming and USB playback. ... show more
