Pesky "Check Engine" light? Other strange warning lights on your dashboard? Just curious about the internal data logging of your vehicle? Here's a relative economical way to check those codes. Clear them if it's a false-alarm. Know in advance if you need to schedule time at the shop - and not get snowballed when you get there. If the gearhead in your life doesn't already have a code reader in their tool-kit, this would make a good addition for them.

The media could not be loaded. I am a mechanic by trade and wanted a small scanner to keep in my vehicles at all times. I thought this scanner would fit the bill perfectly. It’s small and simple. The 4 button design makes it easy to use and navigate. When the scanner arrives, its default display is in metric. I prefer standard so I had to plug it in and change it. After receiving it I plugged it in to a 2001 GMC 2500 with a gas engine. I wanted to see what kind of data points I could read. Its initial startup is reasonably quick. Its selection for vehicle is automatic. It tries to connect and identify the vehicle on its own. I had trouble with scanning the truck. It would not connect or read anything. I tried a different vehicle, a 2012 Camry, and it had no issue with scanning that. It read the data quickly. I also scanned a 2007 Impala without issue. One parameter I was hoping it had in the live data readout was oil pressure. It doesn’t show that data point which is disappointing as it’s a critical engine readout, and I have an intermittent oil pressure light. Overall it’s an ok basic scanner. Its price point is on par with similar small hand held scanners. I wouldn’t buy again for the reasons of not reading older OBD2 and not having oil pressure readout.

If you are looking for a tool that gets straight to the point, the Launch CR319 is a solid contender. It is important to understand that this is strictly a code reader; it is designed to diagnose engine lights and provide basic data, not to act as a high-end workshop computer. Performance & Use The use of this tool is limited to essential engine diagnostics. It can read codes, erase codes, and perform O2 sensor testing. It is also great for checking if your emissions monitors are "Ready" before you head in for a state inspection. In terms of accuracy, it provides reliable DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) information that matches what you would find at a typical auto parts store. Scanner Quality & Capability When it comes to programming capability, this device has none. You should not expect to reprogram keys, calibrate steering angle sensors, or bi-directionally test window motors or fuel pumps. The scanner quality is built for the DIYer who needs to know why their "Check Engine" light is on without spending a fortune. Value for Money For the price, it offers competitive value for money. It holds its own against other budget brands, providing the "Full OBD2 Functions" (like Freeze Frame data and VIN retrieval) that any standard code reader should have. Ease of Use Because it doesn't have complex sub-menus for advanced coding, the ease of use is very high. You plug it into the OBD2 port, and it powers up immediately to give you the answers you need. The Bottom Line: If you want a budget-friendly tool to reset your light and check emissions, this is perfect. If you need to do advanced repairs or programming, you’ll need to look at a higher-tier Launch scan tool.
