Don't be fooled by the description that reads, "Flash Memory Size = 2T" it is a HDD. Also it is "Thunderbolt Compatible" — not a true Thunderbolt Drive. I had the disc for exactly six days and it won't mount. Ran "disc utility". No luck.

Sorry to give a negative review - I prefer to give good reviews, which I do almost always, but this piece of junk. When I received this LaCie Mobile Drive 5TB External Hard Drive ordered on Jul 14, 2019, its outside box was broken. This drive has been faulty from day 1. I tried to use this drive as a backup, copying files from my laptop. CrystalDiskinfo 8.2 shows Health Status: Caution. Whenever I inserted this drive to computer, I would receive a cryptic error message say “There’s problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it”. I feel really upset for this hard drive. Eventually I called Amazon Tech Support, explaining my problems with this hard drive. Amazon graciously gave me a replacement immediately. Transferred all of my files, projects and pictures from my laptop to the replacement after only a few uses this crappy device suddenly crashed & deleted all my files recently without warning. Very disappointed. I would advise you NOT purchase this product as it has the potential to literally ruin your life. Lacie was bought out by Seagate so the drive inside is a Seagate. This Drive is a standard USB-C drive. Not a Thunderbolt 3 drive! Definitely will be my last Seagate. I have used a number of WD drives for quite some time. Never had any really issues. I bought a Western Digital WD_Black 5TB P10 Game Drive for Xbox One, External Hard Drive - WDBA5G0050BBK-WESN on Amazon. So far so good; fast and simple to use. Using MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018), upgraded to Big Sur yesterday, but today the LaCie 'permissions' now deny me to write to it, for the Time Machine backups. Even if "unlocked" on the "get more info" popup, I am unable to change any permissions. It's Sharing & Permissions say "read and write" already existing for 'system' and 'wheel'. For "everyone" it is at read only. When attempting to change any of them, "The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission". I AM the administrator, and already gave the admin code to unlock the padlock at the bottom. This unit is only 1.5 yrs old. Not happy about this. If things change or I find a workaround, I'll update this post. ... show more

Three times this drive has been removed without ejecting and each time all content is lost, the drive has to be reformatted and everything copied over again. Never had that happen to me before with any other drive. Otherwise, the case seems really sturdy, and it is a very attractive drive. I cannot speak to its performance value. ... show more

I had previously ordered 2 different Seagate external storage devices and sent both back because they were simply too complicated to get to work. A few days ago I decided to try again with my new Mac. However, I found so many terrible reviews that I decided to seek something other than Seagate. I discovered Lacie and it had strong reviews. It arrived today. I plugged into my Mac air book and boooom....the Time Machine popped up and a couple of clicks started the download. Took about 20 minutes to download 97GB. Very happy. I bought this external Hard Drive for my mother, who is older & somewhat technologically challenged. She just bought a new MacBook Air & needed a new external HD to use with Time Machine. I had this hard drive sent to her house & shipping was prompt. My mom was able to just plug the HD into the USB 2.0-to-USB 3.0 (Thunderbolt 3) hub I got her, & then into her MacBook Air, & start using it. The hard drive works fine even with the daisy-chained cables. The look is sleek & matches the silver Macs too, which is nice if you care about that sort of thing. All in all I'm very happy with this purchase, providing it keeps working as intended. A few notes: My mother is careful with her stuff & therefore I did not see a need to spend the extra money on a Solid State Drive. This is a traditional Hard Disk Drive, so it spins. If you drop your hard drives, consider getting an SSD so you don't end up with a brick. They are more expensive, though. LaCie is the brand that Apple uses for their in-house sold external drives. As far as my mom could tell, the packaging was authentic & this was a purchase of a real LaCie product. ... show more

I needed a Time Machine external backup drive and one to hold a boot disk. I first purchased a Western Digital external drive and was very disappointed with it as it uploaded software that seemed to conflict with disk utility operations. I could get one Time Machine backup and when done, you had to force eject the drive. This drive works perfectly and does not get confused when your MacBook goes to sleep, installs updates, or undertakes other operations. I’ve used LaCie external drives for many years and they have worked without issue. My only wish is that USB-C powered cables were not so thick and stiff. The external drive is so light that the cable can easily rock it around on your desk. It would be great to have a 2-3inch cable so the MacBook, cable, and external drive could be in a straight line. ... show more
