  • Very powerful water heater
This immersion heater came with a small digital thermometer and a stainless steel scrubber (which makes me fear that it might rust--but it's stainless steel, so it shouldn't rust too much!) Anyway, I bought this immersion heater to use in my hot tub. I have a 25 year old Softub. It works very well, but when you empty out and change the water, it takes about 24 hours to heat the water. I am not patient enough to wait that long! (PLEASE NOTE THAT I DID ALL OF THE FOLLOWING WHILE I WAS OUTSIDE THE TUB AND I UNPLUGGED EVERYTHING BEFORE TOUCHING THE WATER!) I used to use a cattle water heater, which is basically an exposed electric element, which I had tied to a pizza baking stone (to stop it from moving around in the current from the jets). That worked well, but it began to get rusty, and I didn't want rust stains on my vinyl liner. This should work much better. It is not supposed to get hot enough to damage the vinyl, but I might still might tie one end to the pizza stone--just to be sure. THE MANUFACTURERS STATE MULTIPLE TIMES THAT YOU SHOULD NOT TOUCH THE WATER WHILE THE ELEMENT IS IN IT. YOU SHOULD UNPLUG THE APPLIANCE BEFORE TOUCHING THE WATER. Anyway, I don't need to replace the water in my hot tub right now, so I tried this out in a bucket of water filled to the one-gallon line. The water was 57.7 degrees when I started and ten minutes later it was 151.9 degrees. That means it took ten minutes to raise the heat of one gallon of water by 94.2 degrees. That means it would raise the water in my 200 gallon hot tub by just under 3 degrees an hour--I think! When combined with the heater in my hot tub, it should cut the heating time required by more than half. That seems like a great time saving for an appliance that was listed at $18. Also, now that I have it, I might buy an old fashioned metal tub bath so that I can heat some water to bathe my 100lb dog outside as well! ... show more

  • simple means of heating water away from a stove
I got this for beer making which involves adding 2-3 gallons of 170 degree water to the mash. Previously I carried back and forth a large heavy pot to the kitchen from the garage to heat the water by stove. Able to reach 170 degrees from ground temp in about 8 minutes, roughly half the time it took by stove. The heater is surrounded by a perforated metal shield that keeps the outside cool enough to prevent serious burns if accidently touched. There are no controls - plug it in to heat at full power then unplug to turn off. I took off a star for the lack of a switch which I would prefer. Included is a steel pad for removing scaling although I haven't used it enough times to generate any signs of scale. Also included is a digital thermometer. My expected usage will be 1-2 times per month so I see no reason why the heater won't last a long time. ... show more

  • Great when you don't have access to hot water.
I live in an old house that has no running water. It had a well, but it ran dry years ago. I can't afford to fix it, so I just take showers, do laundry and dishes, fill up water jugs at my mom's house. I bought 5 gallon water jugs that I keep by the sinks in the bathroom and kitchen to do things like wash my hands and make coffee and stuff, but sometimes I wish I had warm water, especially during the cold winter. I never knew something like this existed until recently. I didn't understand how it worked at first and was afraid I would get electrocuted lol. But I finally decided to give it a try. Now that I know that you never touch the water when the immersion heater is plugged in, I feel much safer using it. I was worried that it would melt my plastic jug, but it didn't. I checked the time chart and since this particular immersion heater is 2,000 watts, it said it would take 20-25 minutes to heat up 5 gallons of water. I did 20 minutes because I was being cautious since the jug wasn't completely full to the top, so it wasn't a full 5 gallons, and I was afraid of it melting the jug, as I said. You have to put the heater in and then plug it into the outlet. Then you unplug it and leave it for a minute before you take it out. Pretty simple. And now I have warm water! This is much easier than trying to boil or microwave water. This requires less work and doesn't make the water too hot too fast. Also, since my jug has a spout, I can almost have hot running water. I think I will leave it for 25 minutes next time to make it a little hotter, but I am so pleased with this product so far! ... show more

  • Very happy with this.
I was concerned about 2,000 watts. That's a lot. My Kill-A-Watt meter limit is 1875 W. There are no markings visible on this immersion heater. I doubt that's legally kosher, but whatever... So, after noticing similar heaters rated at 1500W, I measured the element's resistance. Ohmmeter said 8.9 ohms. The wall voltage is 120. That means wattage should be around 1600. (online calculator) So I took a chance and plugged the heater into the meter. I was happy to see a range of about 1490 to 1510 W. I can run this heater without worry, anywhere I run a portable hair dryer. Measured 5 gallons of tap water into a 6 gal. bucket. Water is a cool 55 F. Room temperature is 75F. Dropped the heater in. In 10 minutes, it's 76 F. At 20 minutes, 100 F. 22 minutes is 104 F, which is as hot as I like a bath. If I were to fill a tub, I'd probably add buckets of hotter water to some cool water in the tub. The included thermometer is within a couple degrees of a laboratory thermometer. It has two batteries installed, but will run on one or two. Asking price $22.99 at the time of this review. I'd recommend reading the manual and heeding the warnings. Water and electricity don't play nice. ... show more
