  • Awesome product and great valve from an American Company 👍
Color: Satin Nickel
Compared with my other August lock with optional Key Pad and Wi-Fi bridge that I've installed 3 years ago, right off the back, the Kwikset Halo Wi-Fi smart locks performs way much better and offers much attractive price in a One-Piece solution. 1. Compared to the August retrofit of existing deadbolt, the Kwikset replaces the old Deadbolt and works better than August, which at times will get "hang-up" on the keeper and unable to lock. The Halo works seamlessly and works every time. 2. On the Halo, Wi-Fi and Numeric pad is fully integrated into the lock hardware and works great. On the August, the optional Numeric pad sucks so much battery that it needs to be replacement very often. The August Wi-Fi bridge ad-on is just a pain in the rear, when Spectrum Internet goes down, the bridge will looses connection and have a hell of a hard time trying to get it connect. The Wi-Fi setup on the Halo is a breeze. 3. The Halo apps display the battery status on the APP, while August lock don't show battery status and email you when battery is about to die. Go figure. 4. I was able to install the Halo fairly quickly reading the manuals briefly without watch install video on the APP, unlike the August, I've to call support during Wi-Fi bridge installation due to sloppy BlueTooth software stack implementation, the Bluetooth was not compatible with my Motorola Android phone, have to uses a older Android phone. The Wi-Fi setup on the Halo was like a walk in the park. 5. Did not have a need to call customer service, unlike August, have to call their overseas based customer support that I've a tough time understanding due to the accent of the customer service rep. 6. Overall, the Kwikset apps is easy to use and have all the functions that I needed and works great. I would be replacing the August and other manual locks soon. 7. Great product, at a great price. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great replacement for my August lock
Color: Venetian Bronze
I have had an August smart lock for about 3 years and it suddenly started jamming and not recognizing me when I arrived. I reset everything as they suggested and used Grok AI as well trying to fix it and finally gave up. I researched the best locks online and found this Kwikset Halo to be very highly rated. The installation instructions are found with a QR code and they literally walk you through each step with small videos and very clear instructions. Once installed the fine tuning of the app allowed me to set up geofencing, schedules, and Alexa connection and it is working perfectly. The only negative is how loud it is when locking but the August made noise too, just softer. I'm very happy with it, it is priced competitively, and I can use a key as a backup, the app, and best of all, just driving in my garage it unlocks automatically. ... show more

  • Awful lock. Terrible battery. Awful app connection. Loud.
Color: Satin Nickel
If I could give it 0 stars I would. First the good: It looks nice. It was easy to install. It is easy to set up access codes and vacation mode works well. Now the bad: It is incredibly loud. It takes 5 seconds or more to disengage the lock. My new one from Schlage is much quieter and unlocks in a second. The app disconnected from the lock every couple weeks forcing me to redo setup many times Any time I tried to lock the app using the app, it jammed the deadbolt and I would have to go down stairs to check it. Entirely eliminates the point of the app The battery died every 2 weeks. This is not an exaggeration. It was installed on my door for 2 months, I changed the batteries 4 times. The first 2 days on new batteries, the lock would open quickly, but then after 2 days it would get slow and sluggish. There was no notice in the app of a low battery, it would just disconnect from the app and die, causing us to have to use the backup key. My Schlage encode has been on my door for 3 months now and is still at 90% battery Between the Schlage encode and the Kwikset Halo, the choice could not be more clear This lock is terrible and is a waste of money. I regret buying it. ... show more

  • Great keypad ok app.
Color: Satin Nickel
I am giving this five stars right now where it could also be four stars. So the install is very easy. If you never replaced locks on a door the instructions they give is straight forward. The set-up once they are installed is also very simple and straight forward. I have had these installed for about two weeks. After the first five days when I went to unlock them with the app, it showed them as not connected to the internet. I tried to soft restart them by removing the battery but they never reconnected. I ended up fully factory resetting them and they reconnected and as of now they have been good. Now I do use a mesh wifi and instructions say they need a 2.4 GHz connection. I have other products that say the same and haven't had any issues with connection, so I hope this was a one time thing. If it happens again, I will create a 2.4 GHz only one and see how that goes. But with all that being said, the physical buttons work fine and the Google home integration works fine too. You need to set a pin for Google to unlock them. But you don't with the app. Speaking of the app, it's not bad but does seem to hangup quite a bit. I wondered if the connection issue I had was a problem caused by the app. I have used the app to try and unlock them but sometimes it doesn't work. When I use Google home to it will work. So again, I think it's the app that just sometimes doesn't work. But it is easy to use, to set up pins and users. I do wish there was a notification option on the app to select what type of notifications to receive. If you have the notifications on from your phone settings you will get a ton for every time the door locks or unlock. I wish you could limit those. I would only want notifications for my battery life or lost of connection. Something that I didn't find in the guide but stumbled on it myself is turning on the backlit for the keypad. In the app setting there is a option to turn the keypad sound off, by doing so you turn the backlight on. So if you have the sound on, there is no backlight. But if you have the sound off, you get backlight. I prefer the backlit option for when it's dark out. I will mention the backlights only come on when you press a button and doesn't stay on. Also these do come with a key and it's easy to rekey a existing one. Unfortunately my keys were to thick to work but I bought two of these for my front and back door, and re-keyed one do them to work for both doors. I will be sure keep this updated to see if there are any more connection issues and how the battery holds up. But I do really likes these and it's nice to have different options to unlock them. Update 8/24 Quick update regarding these locks. I know battery life was estimated at 4-6 months depending on use. I have had both locks with the original batteries over two months and had to replace them already. Now the battery life was at 40% and it would show jammed when closing or opening. I switched out the batteries and that went away. I will see how the new batteries hold up. Otherwise, I still haven't had any connectivity issues since that one time. I have run into a couple of times where I punch my code in, and nothing happens. I punch it in again then it works. But this has been rare. I will continue to update these as time goes on. Update 12/25 Now having this for a bit and removing the cover to replace the batteries, the cover broke. I reached out to their customer service to see if I could order another one. They didn't sell them at the time but went ahead and sent me a replacement. They don't just send the plastic cover but the whole back metal piece. Seems like a waste but was cool that I got a replacement. I recently switched to lithium batteries and have noticed a huge improvement in battery life. Highly recommend those. I still get the rare occurrence where I press the pin button but they don't do anything. Still need to hit the lock button then press the pin and it works. I am removing a star. I still think it's a good product and would recommend it still. ... show more

  • Great simple smart lock that just works.
Color: Satin Nickel
tl;dr: Easy to install (especially if you've done it before). Even easier to set up with the app. Battery life is fine for what it is. My ~8 year old smart lock was wearing out and my wife wanted something more reliable. I had been holding out for something with Matter/Thread support, but (when I was ordering) the options were practically non-existent. I had 15 different phone apps for "smart home" devices that don't integrate with each other, and I hate it, so I started looking for a smart lock that would work for one of those apps. Again, nothing impressed me. I finally looked for the cheapest SmartKey lock so at least it would simplify something, and this was it. Looks like I am up to 16 smart home phone apps now, but at least only one house key. Installation was straight forward especially with step by step instructions from the app. Adding new user codes was a breeze. I like the notifications (they can be disabled) and the battery life display in the app. The lock actuates quickly from app actions too. For people who complain about battery life: please understand that WiFi is just not power efficient at all (hence the drive towards Matter/Thread protocols). However, the big benefit is WiFi makes it way faster and easier to communicate with less points of failure. Other options add a plug-in "bridge" that talks to the lock with a low-power wireless protocol, but those are slow and sometimes not responsive in my experience. I use 4xAA rechargeable batteries and they last 3-4 weeks depending on usage. I can change the batteries in less than 30 seconds with no tools, and you get plenty of notification before they get low enough for the lock to stop working. This works fine for our needs and I'm very satisfied with it's build quality and function so far. ... show more

  • Get fresh batteries, install properly…
Color: Venetian Bronze
Works great. To address issues others raised— Battery life: The batteries it ships with are junk. They quickly run down. Get a good quality, long-life fresh battery and the unit battery life is reasonable. — jamming: your door and locket must be installed properly. You should be able to turn the lock with zero resistance or it will jam. If you have to push or pull on the door to relieve pressure on the cylinder, it will jam. A manual lock can be turned with force and made to work, this lock set requires proper installation. I had to realign the sleeve in the door jam that receives the bolt so it would go in without excessive friction. The lock works great when properly installed and the battery life is fine if you toss the batteries that shipped with the unit and install fresh decent ones. Not saying that every unit is perfect but I have 2 and am satisfied with them. ... show more

  • Great customer support, but that is because you need it
Color: Satin Nickel
I’ve installed several smart locks in the past. They were Yale brand and had no issue with either the Zigbee or WiFi versions. They are my personal recommendation and what I would always choose, but this time I purchased a Kwikset Halo with keypad because that is what my mother in law wanted. Her friend has one so I just did what she asked. Short story, I was able to get it installed and working after spending hours more time on it than I would have guessed and then needing to get help from customer support. Longer story: Physical installation is straightforward and in line with normal lock installations. You need to be precise in making all the holes for the deadbolt and lock, but that is normal for many locks. You really want everything set up so that it all moves super freely and easily otherwise the batteries will deplete fast. I any case, the work is well covered and illustrated in the instructions and the components are nicely packaged with their step number on each sub-package. Software installation. My family all use iPhones, including the MIL. So, I downloaded the app and used its lock installation and linking prompts. Here is where this install became a joke. 1. The lock does not work without the phone app. You can use the manual keyed entry and turn the indoor knob to operate it, but the keypad does not come with a default code or a way to manually input a new code. The competitor in my case, Yale, does have this feature of manual input without a phone. Getting the phone link to work is mandatory in order to use this lock as more than just a keyed deadbolt. I think this is bad feature management and makes it a total loser compared to Yale. 2. In order to get the WiFi or (presumably Z wave on the other versions) to work you MUST get Bluetooth connectivity to work. In my case, the phone could not detect a BT signal from the unit once it was installed, powered on, etc. All else seemed OK. I presumed it was an issue with my MIL’s iPhone SE, but my other phone didn’t see a signal either when the blue flashing light on the unit was signaling it should. A. Online help searches (it was after the support line was closed) and many reboots, clearings, etc. B. No joy. C. Manually locked up and left it until the next day. 3. Customer Support: Much nicer experience. They answered much more promptly than expected and the responder, Angela, was definitely a US based, N. American English as a primary language, speaker. Wow! She patiently walked me through the complete factory reset of the lock, reset of the Bluetooth security chain and setting on my phone (had to turn BT off/on, BT access for the app off/on, look for some stupid phantom driver that is incompatible, etc.), and then move forward. We got it to work. Yay, Angela! 4. The rest of the app linking was OK but does take a while due to the time of firmware upgrade (10 - 15 minutes or so) and my desire to make sure I would not need to completely reset the world again if I made a mistake. When it was all done, I got it to work well. The phones link now and the combo pad is good. The app is a bit unobvious as to how to do certain things, like resetting the code if you want to make a change after the initial input. You need to dig into the individual user settings vs. the lock settings to find where to do this. That would be OK if there’s some instructions, but those were hard to access. For instance, no reference in the paper manual. I had to look online as well as fumble for some minutes. BTW, I may be overrating myself, but most of my friends would agree if I have trouble with some techie gadget, most everyone will. SO, if you got one of these and all went well from the beginning - good for you. If you have an issue, don’t wait to call support because odds are, IMO, you will need to call them anyways so do it sooner. I am rating this a 3 because of the missing manual setup feature that competition has and the fact that BT, the normally easiest pairing in the universe, was so hard. ... show more

  • Reliable and smooth operation with good WiFi and installation
Color: Venetian Bronze
The critical issue here is that the installation and operation of this lock must be frictionless, as another reviewer said. Two things will cause the batteries to drain quickly: a lock that requires effort to close and a poor WiFi setup. Set up a dedicated WiFi connection for your IOT devices like this lock, and another for your regular streaming services. It is used dozens of times a day and I can get almost two months out of the batteries. Bought a cheap set of lithium rechargeables for this lock and for a camera system after the alkaline batteries leaked. I installed this lock in 2001, and again moved it to another house in 2002 with no issues. The app has been reliable (and free!) and I don’t really need the Bluetooth to connect except for firmware updates. Given the longevity it was definitely good value for the money. ... show more
