This one is going back; not sure what I’ll replace it with yet. Disappointed since my home is all Kwikset. 1) The app is garbage. Difficult to create an account because of poor UX and buggy password logic. Buggy lock “history” screen is sorted by date/time, but some lock/unlock events not sorted into position and appear at end of list. At some point new events stopped being added to the history at all. No mechanism in-app to view or update the lock WiFi settings - must reset from the lock itself and re-add it to your account. 2) The WiFi connection never worked at all. During setup it found my network, accepted the password and said it was connected. The app reports it is connected. The lock never receives commands via WiFi though, and the app reports that it must be offline. If I’m within Bluetooth range then it will lock/unlock via the app. 3. I was never able to successfully add additional user codes. When I add a new code it renders in yellow and shows a warning when tapped that “the app and the lock are syncing”, but that almost never completes, even with the Bluetooth connection active. One time it appeared to successfully add the new code, but the lock wouldn’t accept it. ... show more

I have been a longtime user of Kwikset powerbolt locks and they rank as 5's in my book. When I read about this, I was very excited to use it for our rental property in Florida(we live in Tenn.). It took about a year after it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show to get to market. I got it about 4 months ago. When I first tried to install it, it would not find my wi-fi. We had several other electronics having no problem locating our wi-fi signal but the lock only worked as a deadbolt and not with the wi-fi. After several attempts over 2 weeks, I finally called and spoke to Kwikset service. The first line of service immediately sent me to the advanced technical team. They very efficiently and nicely walked me through a process which required me to undo all traces of the lock on my app and on the lock itself and re-install everything. Amazingly, it worked. Now , 4 months later and with a renter at the house, the lock just stopped recognizing any codes and after several changes of batteries, it keeps saying that batteries are low. I can't make a 12 hour trip to Florida every time there is a glitch, so, unfortunately, I am going to buy an old style Powerbolt and install that and throw this poorly operating lock away. $275 wasted. I like Kwikset products but this was introduced before it was ready and needs another couple of iterations before I look at it again. Save yourself some money and frustration and use the old tried and true until Kwikset really gets this market ready. ... show more

    • Lock pretty good. Software poor with major design flaws

Got one to test at home and it seemed pretty good. Switched over an additional 7 locks to these and they worked fairly well. Only complaint initially was that the hardware portion sticks a little more than most locks and causes the keypad motor to jam or run longer, thereby running down the batteries. The big problem is that Kwikset is not aware that occasionally people get new cell phones. Three weeks after installations, I got a new cell. They have a huge design flaw in that simply getting a new cell phone requires that you drive around to each lock (in our case two different cities) and basically start over. Even doing that, however, their documentation and tech support thinks you need to basically wipe out the lock to get that done, but there's a simpler way. If you follow their guidance, then other users to whom you have shared the locks would then need to drive around to every lock as well even if they have the same phone that was already set up. Still need to physically visit the locks. They already have 2-factor authentication built in to their software, so doing this is ridiculous and simply a design flaw. Their installation also isn't smart enough to detect and handle if the lock is already known to the phone, so if the install fails for a variety of reasons, all future attempts will just freeze until it errors out with no indication of why. Fix is simple, but not in the instructions. They could easily fix this in the software, but for some reason have chosen not to. In short - for personal home use, probably 4-5 stars if you're careful with both hardware and software installation If you're thinking about using this for multiple rentals or one not very close to where you live, probably not a good choice. If Kwikset would make the minimal effort to fix the design flaws in their software, then it would be 4-5 stars for almost any use. ... show more

    • Faulty electronics

Followed all instructions, stopped multiple times to check locking mechanism. Everything was hooked up and looked good on door. Got the app to work and read the lock. Verification after verification, everything was working! Then, I hit "lock" in the app, "jammed". You could see it trying to turn the wrong way. Manually locked it and hit "unlock". Same thing, and again turning the wrong way. Called Kwikset support and was put on hold for 30+ min...meanwhile also trying to take it apart and "flip" the locking mechanism. The "up" side was clearly "up" and wouldn't line up "down". So this came off and will probably go back unless Kwikset decides to answer their phone for customer support. Super disappointed that after all that and $200, it would have such an issue as turning the lock the wrong way. Edit: Day 3...continued 30+min holds from customer support.... ... show more
