  • Works great, but watch your door alignment.
Intro: I currently have three (3) of these locks installed on my house - and I love them. This device was actually my first introduction into Z-Wave about 3 years ago (along with a VeraEdge hub). My better half grew up in the middle of nowhere and was never concerned with locking doors. When her mother sold the house she was raised in, I actually had to change the locks, because she couldn't find a copy of the key to hand over at closing!. Needless to say, I spent many years trying to get her into the habit of carrying keys and locking doors with no success - it was time to change tactics. I decided that a smart keypad lock was the way to go and opted to go with the Z-Wave version so I could grow my smart home in the future (little did I know it would turn into an addiction). The lock had worked out great, so much so that over time I replaced all three exterior deadbolts with these. Installation: Lets start with installing the lock. You have, or will likely read some negative reviews about this lock and I can tell you that most issues with the lock operation could be traced back to the installation and the alignment of the door. We have all had door where you have to give it a little "nudge" or pull while turning the key to get it to lock. With a standard deadbolt, this becomes muscle memory and everything works fine, but in reality this means something is not properly aligned. The lock has a tapered end on the deadbolt to help compensate for some minor issues, but if you do not address an alignment issue before or during the installation of this lock, you are asking for trouble down the road as the motor is overworked trying to force the bolt through. Other then the alignment tolerance, and a few extra parts involved with the electronics, conceptually, this is installed no differently then a standard deadbolt. One thing to keep in mind however, is the indoor portion of the lock, which houses the battery compartment, it larger then a typical deadbolt. On one door, I had to sand down few millimeters of trim around the glass panel to make it fit. Z-Wave: These locks paired easily with my Vera Hub. When my Zwave network was very small, I do recall the range being somewhat limited and ended up adding a plug in module nearby to serve as a repeater. As my network has grown, I have not seen any range/connectivity issues. Vera is able to manage PIN codes "out of the box", if you are using SmartThings or other platforms, handlers or smartapps may be required. I am able to assign multiple PIN codes, temporary codes and schedule-limited codes (perhaps for a contractor or dog walker?). Vera can also set up alerts when certain codes are used, or if a bad code is attempted. Physical Functionality: I have always like Kwikset locks for the smart key functionality (you can re-key the lock your self without taking it apart, provided you have the current key) and that feature is included on these locks for the manual cylinder. The keypad is back lit which helps at night, and there is a subtle led status indicator inside to give you quick locked/unlocked confirmation (you can program this on/off). My one complaint (and reason for the 4 stars instead of 5) is the lock is relatively loud when it operates electronically. My family and I are mostly used it at this point and its only for less then a second, but I still wish it was quieter. Battery Life: The lock uses 4 AA batteries and I get at least 6 months of usage, usually more before replacing them at 20% or so. This will vary based on how often the lock is operated electronically and your mileage may vary. I last replaced the batteries in all three locks about 2 months ago and two are at 70% and the third is at 80%. Summary: Overall I am very happy with the lock (all three of them). I have had one in service for over three years and more for about 1.5 years with no issues. The flexibility and assurance I get from having these by far outweighs my only complaint of the sound level. ... show more

  • Well Made Product
I had already been using a Kwikset 910 for about 3 years prior to ordering and installing this, as I wanted to make sure it would hold up. The original 910 has definitely been a solid product. No waring button numbers, and we use this multiple times a day. The batteries last about 8 months, including during the winter months here in Maine. This item is well worth the price. This was a set with the door handle, which perfectly matches the lock, but will require drilling a small hole for the bottom of the handle, but was easy to do with the included template. I have the Kwikset integrated with my Ring alarm system and couldn't be happier. You definitely get what you pay for with this product! ... show more

  • Great lock, integrates with Vivint
Style: Z-Wave Plus Color: Venetian Bronze
Purchased this because we wanted a way to keep from getting locked out accidentally, and also for Z-wave integration with Vivint. The mechanical potion of the install to refit it into an existing lock was simple. Took a few tries to pair it with the Vivint system but it finally took. Like the convenience of push button entry if I don't have keys, and being able to ensure it's locked remotely.. instead of "did I lock the door?". One thing to note is the lock runs on batteries, so to conserve power if it has not been locked/unlocked for some time, it will drop from the Vivint panel. To have it show again simply lock/unlock via the number pad. Batteries last about 6 months with daily use of going in and out. Will be getting more of this lock for the remaining doors in our home. Great looking, easy to operate, and happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • Kwikset Electronic Deadbolt Lock w/Z-Wave
Style: Z-Wave Color: Lifetime Polished Brass
The Kwikset 910 deadbolt lock with Z-Wave technology has worked very well for my application. I am using the lock with my DMP 50 security system. Once properly programmed on the DMP unit end, the lock functions as described by it literature. We did find that in order for the lock and the system to recognize each other for programming, the lock electronic unit must be brought to within about 10 feet or less of the DMP 50 "motherboard" unit. Plan on this initial programming taking a while to transfer to the lock. Say 30 minutes or more. Once properly programmed, the lock will work as it should. Distance from the DMP system unit is important, as is battery condition. Things work well, with proper Z-Wave handshaking and commands and status being passed properly for perhaps a month. Once my lock batteries fell below 1.3 volts each, the Z-Wave operation became erratic. The lock itself was still functioning fine, electronically locking and so forth, but it would not communicate with the system unit. Replacing the batteries with fresh ones solved that immediately. While originally not in favor of the concept, my family now likes having this lock. No more getting locked out because you left your key, where-ever... When working in the yard, and you decide to come in the front door, no problem, enter the code! Installation was no problem, as physically this lock replaced an original manual Kwikset unit. I simply put the included spacer into the round hole for the original lock, and then screwed the back bracket on, and the complete lock mounted up easily. If you can install a deadbolt lock, you won't have any additional problems with this one. I had to wait on a technician to come and work with me (required by my monitoring company for first install of all Z-Wave components), so I set up the two allowed electronic pass codes manually (only two allowed manually, about 20 when part of a Z-Wave system). This worked well, for perhaps two weeks, until we could get together and program the overall security system. After that original programming, the master user(s) can program the lock timing along with the security system using the DMP 50 favorites, scheduling, and other features. Master user can also add or take off users by entering new ones or making changes, entered on the DMP 50 panel, and then pushing them on the lock (push button for save to lock, I think it is). This process takes about 10-12 minutes, so be patient here also! Overall, I am very pleased with this lock. There are a few things I would like to see work a little differently, but I am picky on some of this. Were I to say this has any problems or issues so far, I would say the limited working distances for the Z-Wave "recognition" and the speed at which the Z-Wave devices update status and take action. I enter lock as a remote command and it takes perhaps 15-20 seconds to take the action. Recall that initial programming is best done with the lock electronics and the system unit close together, and allow plenty of time for the programing to complete!!! Saving new users or making changes also take a bit of time, but the lock doesn't have to be removed from the door for this. Still, especially at the sale price I purchased this one for, I rate this lock highly. Very good capability! ... show more
