  • From Coffee Machine to Espresso Machine
Color: Black Matte Style: Espresso Machine + Auto Frother
Emphasis on Coffee Short story; pretty good coffee machine. KitchenAid provides a complete package of high quality accessories that wouldn’t leave anyone wanting for brewing coffee. Regarding Espresso, it’s another matter. An item or 2 is required and or replaced in addition to patience and technique in order to pull a shot of tasty expresso. In the Beginning I've owned various Espresso machines. Moka Pot, Super-automatic leading to purchasing a Prosumer espresso machine and Grinder. It was that Prosumer machine where I learned how to pull a decent shot of espresso. Nowadays I had a very inexpensive espresso machine. Which has been set aside for the KitchenAid. Accessories Accessories Of all the machines that I’ve owned, out of the box, the KES640BM includes everything required to make coffee straightaway. All of items illuminates KitchenAid’s attention to detail as well as their Industrial Design prowess. For example, the machine features a detachable Streaming Wand with the inclusion of a Stainless Steel Milk Pitcher and an Automatic Milk Frothier. Both Pressurized and Non-pressurized Filter Baskets are provided. Its Commercial Size 58mm Portafilter is aesthetically beautiful. Steam Heat Like every other espresso machine that I’ve owned, despite the manufacturer’s claims of quickly reaching temperature, the reality is at least 40 minutes is necessary to achieve optimal brewing temperature. Leaving the machine on can be a little challenging as a machine times out - goes to sleep - in minutes. Dial “G” for Espresso “Dialing in” the KitchenAid, using 100% Arabica Beans Espresso Blend, Medium Roast. Utilizing its Single Dose Non-pressurized filter basket there wasn’t much taste difference between new and old espresso machines. My assumption was that the issue was not with the KitchenAid, but was with my Grinder. I reasoned, that it was time for an upgrade. Upon replacing the grinder, brewing the same 100% Arabica Beans blend, I could taste “Flavor Notes” a 1st for me. Where’s the Creama? Next up with a blend of both Arabica and Robusto Beans. Again a Medium Roast. The inclusion of Robusto Beans should’ve create larger amounts of Creama. My Initially results was puzzling as I didn't experience any more Creama. After an Investigation I found the culprit to be the included Portafilter itself because of its plastic liner, there to divert the coffee into its spouts. The Liner didn't conduct heat and also created a bottleneck. It was replaced with both a Bottomless and 2-Spout Portafilters. Conclusion It does have some annoying traits. I would’ve preferred to have an adjustable sleep timer rather than adjustable water temperatures. Still KitchenAid has delivered the best espresso experience in my coffee journey. This was made so by a couple additions and patiences. LIKE - Full set of high-quality accessories - Delicious espresso once dialed - Commercial sized 58mm Portafilter - Heated Cup warmer - Good Steaming Capability - Automatic Milk Frothier NO LIKE - Needs to be more focused at being an espresso machine too many compromises for coffee drinkers - Goes into Sleep TOO QUICKY, doing so does not allow machine sufficient time to achieve optimal brewing temperature resulting in under brewed, sour, tasting espresso - Would've liked if it matched my KitchenAid Stand Mixer, Plastic Body not Robust. - Brew Group does not heat up. A hot brew group keeps the temperature stable through the whole extraction process. ... show more

  • Simple, well made, makes great espresso
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel Style: Metal Espresso
FAST FACTS: PROS: Nicely made metal body, simple interface, flat portafilter, quiet, sleek CONS: Limited movement steam wand DETAILED REVIEW: Let me preface this review by stating that this is the 5th espresso machine I have owned and it's my second favorite. My favorite machine is the Breville Espresso Pro, which I use in my main house. This KitchenAid is in our vacation house. The KitchenAid is better than the DeLonghi, GE Profile, and Cafe espresso machines I've owned previously. The KitchenAid is very nicely made with a brushed metal body and has a robust and dense build quality. I paid extra for the metal finish, and I'm glad I did. The only slightly cheap feeling part is the water reservoir. The plastic feels a bit brittle. The machine is modestly sized and easily fits under my cabinets on the countertop. There is enough room under the cabinet to easily maneuver the pitcher when steaming milk. The KitchenAid is very simple to use with bright LED indicator lights and pleasant feeling push buttons. It is quick to heat up and get ready, and also fairly quick to produce steam. The machine is quiet in use. I used the included 2 cup non-pressurized filter basket. I placed 19 grams of freshly ground coffee beans inside. I appreciate the flat bottomed portafilter that makes it easy to tamp down the grounds right on my counter. The espresso came out in a smooth stream with the desired warm honey color. The crema was not as rich and thick as the Breville's, but was pleasant. Steaming the Califia Farms - Oat Barista Blend Oat Milk with the steam wand worked nicely and created a warm milk with a frothy texture. I wish the steam wand offered more range of movement, however. The espresso that the KitchenAid made was wonderful tasting with a rich flavor, and little acidity. The temperature was ideal. The overall experience is pleasant. All in all... a great machine. ... show more

  • Love it
Color: Espresso Black Matte Style: Espresso
I've had this machine for about a month now and I love it. I thought it would be difficult to dial in my espresso, and it kinda was sometimes, but it was still very fun and rewarding. The manuals are very helpful, and the machine is so easily learned. Initially I was sort of torn by the fact that this has a plastic housing, but it does not feel cheap. It matches my matte black KitchenAid mixer, and looks cute without any help. I've been practicing my latte art on my cappuccino every morning and I love it. In fact, last weekend I went to a coffee shop for the first time in months to order a cappuccino and compare it to what I make at home - I prefer homemade! So happy with this machine, especially for the price range that you see out there, I think it works well, looks stylish and hopefully will keep working well for a long time. ... show more
