I purchased this machine, the Breville Barista Express (Renewed), in October of 2018. I don't normally write reviews (although I should) but this product deserves a little bit of my time and effort to promote! Since the purchase, it has worked perfectly 99% of the time. After reading many reviews of the machine (and like the top review for this specific product states) I also purchased the ~$30 4 year protection plan. I also normally pass on these types of options as I find them to be a waste of money, but with the cost of the refurbished machine being so much lower $30 seems like a fantastic investment to keep this thing up and running. I've joked with my wife that we'll just buy a second one when this one goes down so we can still use it while the other one is "in the shop". But I think that's the key to this machine. You buy it almost with the expectation that at some point it's going to need a repair. If you come in with that expectation, when it does happen it's not so bad! So far, we've not had to send it in for any repairs. The things I love about it There are three main things I love about this machine - the value, quality, and convenience. Value: My wife and I did a very rough value estimation to determine how much each drink might cost us over the span of three years (provided the machine lasts that long) and it came down to somewhere around ~$1.00+ / drink. Ok, so cheap coffee... great. But our excitement over this fun estimate was that not only was it $3-4 cheaper than starbucks, the drinks are WAY better. I've even grown to like our homemade espresso drinks more than the most expensive craft coffee shop I've been to. I don't know quite what it is - but it's just better. So, the incredible value of $1.00 / drink and the extreme quality put this as one of the most useful and practical appliances we have and use. Oh and we have pulled an average of 2-3 drinks from it every day since October. I've even used it for 9 drinks in a day before (although I don't recommend... spending 2 hours making coffee wasn't fun). So, the value mixed with the quality makes this one of my favorite purchases ever. Now for the convenience factor. I personally didn't want to have to do much research or really have 2 different machines on our counter, so I love the fact that it's got everything all in one and I've (maybe because I've never tried a better grinder or machine) never desired separate components. Like I said, I like my own homemade drinks more than any coffee shop where their equipment is... well worth more than my car. Who am I kidding - worth more than 2-3 of my cars. I'm not quick to give things 5 stars and while this machine certainly isn't perfect, because it's so good at what it does with such low cost (relatively speaking) and we get so much use out of it, it earned the 5 stars. What don't I love about it To give a bit of background here's my coffee journey. 1992 (birth year) - 2017 I never drank coffee; 2017 - 2018 drank coffee from Ninja Single Serve Coffee Bar, 2018 - now Breville Barista Express. So, overall, I'm still very young in my coffee drinking experience. So, when I first opened the Breville machine and read the manual, I was overwhelmed with everything I needed to do to pull a good shot and steam some milk for a latte. My first attempt was about 20 minutes before we needed to leave for church and I made two horrible lattes. I was overwhelmed and stressed that this wasn't what I expected it to be. So, when we got home after church, I tried again. Still, not a great drink. But as I slowly did research and learned a few top level techniques, things became less scary. So, it's not easy to use and it is time consuming to make a drink. But... as another reviewer mentioned, that's kind of the fun of it! I know thoroughly enjoy it (making at most 2 at a time... any more is a little much). It was well worth the learning curve to get to where we are now. I've joked with my wife that we need to start setting aside $10 / month so that we can buy our next one when this one inevitably dies. But it's only 50% a joke. If (when) that day comes, I do expect to purchase this machine again. Coffee is delicious and to get the best drink (again better than any coffee shop I've been to) for this cost, this consistently and frequently, makes this the most valuable and used appliance we own. It's well worth the price-tag.

I've wanted (and watched out for) a good espresso machine for home for about a decade now so when I saw this machine on Amazon for $200+ off the original price, I couldn't help myself. Truth be told, I used it at home for a while but when the newness wore off I got tired of cleaning it up every morning after making just one cup of coffee and returned to stopping at my favorite local coffee shop on my daily drive to work. At least 3 other coworkers stopped at the same local coffee shop daily so I decided to take my machine to work. Best decision. I now enjoy an incredible cup of coffee every morning (and often an iced latte in the afternoon) and share the responsibility of cleaning it with my coworkers. We're all happy. Here are my best tips for fully enjoying it: BE PATIENT It will take some time before you get it right. Read the instructions. Watch some YouTube videos. Then start working with it. You won't get it right away but when you do, it's worth it. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BEANS For the love of all that is good in the world, please don't insult this machine with Starbucks beans. I know it's tempting to buy those cheaper beans (or others) at the grocery store but when you spend $500 on an espresso machine, you must be serious about coffee. It's time to be equally as serious about your beans so buy them from a local roaster. If I can find good quality, locally roasted beans in the middle of Oklahoma, you most likely have access to them, too. If not, I've heard you can buy good beans on Amazon. I happen to LOVE my local roaster (Elemental Coffee) and after trying beans from other places, nobody else comes anywhere close. Good beans make a serious different in the quality of your coffee. AUTOMATIC VS MANUAL GRINDING This machine has the option to grind a set amount of beans into the portafilter. If you place the portafilter properly in its place under the grinder and press it all the way back then release, it will fill with a preset amount of beans (as controlled by the dial on the front of the machine). However I never use this function. Instead, I push the portafilter all the way in and hold it in place until it's filled. When you choose to have it autofill, the portafilter isn't directly under the grinder, it's just a little off-set, so more grounds end up on the tray under the grinder than if I hold the portafilter in place. I spend good money on beans so there's no way I'm wasting any of them. GRIND MATTERS Did I mention it will take some time to get it right? Because it will. You'll have to adjust the grind size of your beans and adjust the pressure you apply when tamping to get the pressure right for that perfect cup of coffee. It takes practice but you'll figure it out. And know that if you switch beans, you almost have to start at square one with grind size because different beans grind differently. The goal is to get the pressure gauge to read in the "espresso range" for every shot you pull. That means you need to watch that gauge every time you make coffee to make sure you got everything right. (It sounds insanely high maintenance but again, if you spend $500+ on an espresso machine, you must want a superior cup of coffee.) MILK TEMPERATURE There are only a couple things I recommend to buy to go with this machine... the first is espresso shot glasses. They're completely optional, though. I usually pull my shots directly into my re-usable ceramic coffee cup so I don't really use them but if your coffee cup is taller than a standard height it won't fit under the portafilter. In that case, shot glasses are handy. The one tool I highly recommend is a thermometer to clip on the side of your milk carafe. Milk is best between 140º-160ºF (60º-71ºC) for lattes. Too cool and you're drinking lukewarm coffee. Too warm and you risk burning the milk. When you get it in the ideal range, the milk is at its sweetest (for lack of a better term, it isn't actually sweet). It really does make a difference in the taste of your latte. Eventually you'll be able to simply touch the carafe and know you're in range but it's worth a few extra dollars to make sure you get it right while you're learning. SYRUPS... EH I normally get a vanilla latte at coffee shops but when I have really good beans, I want nothing but espresso and steamed milk. It's just that good. If you buy lower quality beans you may want syrups. And if you buy Starbucks beans, you definitely need syrups to cover up the weird, almost burned, taste. I can't say enough about this machine. I love that it has the grinder attached but that it's still mostly manual. I was tempted to spend a little extra money and go with one of the Breville upgrades but I wanted a little more control than just pushing a touchscreen button to brew a cup of coffee. I think this machine is the perfect balance between a fully manual and fully automatic espresso machine. I couldn't be happier. And neither could my coworkers (they talk about it every day).

The media could not be loaded. Was very frustrated with this purchase. The machine came and did not work at all. Water sprayed from everywhere. Eventually got it sent to Breville to get repaired after a couple of calls with their customer service, but the whole process has been very slow to get it back to them. Hoping that it comes back working.

The media could not be loaded. Love Breville! We had our last Breville for 8 years, it finally wore out so we replaced it with the same style. It is not as loud as the last one we had, it is still very easy to clean. It makes a great cup of coffee in no time! It is very simple to use and comes with everything you need to make a cup of coffee. I put a short video so you can hear how it sounds when it is 1st turned on. We make at least 2-3 cups of coffee everyday and the quantity of coffee is great everytime.

I had the opportunity to use one of these machines at my workplace and really liked it. When I found a refurbished unit on Amazon for $450, I jumped on it since brand-new models are $900 and up as of late 2025. The machine arrived looking brand new, with all parts included. My only issue is that it doesn’t pull the correct amount of water for a single or double shot. Everything else works perfectly, so I don’t mind pressing the button again to get the full amount of liquid. Overall, I’m happy with the purchase and feel it was a great value, especially since I couldn’t justify paying full price for a new one.
