I've owned espresso machines before, so I came into this with a basic understanding of how they work, but the Kismile had a few quirks I had to get used to. Overall though, I think this is a solid entry-level machine and a fantastic starter kit for anyone looking to learn the art of brewing espresso at home. First, let's talk filters. The machine comes with both a single shot and double shot basket, and both are available in single wall and double wall versions. Single wall filters are better suited for freshly ground coffee beans since the coffee itself creates the resistance needed for a good extraction. Double wall filters have a built-in layer that helps compensate for older coffee or pre-ground beans, making them a bit more forgiving. Having all four options included is a nice touch and gives you flexibility depending on what coffee you're working with. After a quick read through the instruction manual, I had a good grasp of how everything worked. One thing that threw me off at first was how the grinder operates. To grind for a single shot you press the grind button once, and for a double shot you press it twice in quick succession. Simple enough once you know, but not totally intuitive. My bigger issue with the double shot grind is that it consistently grinds way too much coffee. I always end up having to shake a good amount out before I can tamp and fit the portafilter into the machine properly. Speaking of tamping, I really appreciate that the included tamp is solid metal. Some competing machines include a cheap plastic tamp that feels flimsy and doesn't give you a consistent press. This one feels like it belongs in a proper espresso setup. The milk frothing wand works well for making lattes and cappuccinos. I'll be honest, steaming milk is a skill and I'm still working on it, but after watching a couple of videos online I was able to produce a decent enough foam for a latte. It gets the job done. My one ongoing challenge has been dialing in the grind size. I was never able to achieve that silky, smooth espresso shot I'm used to, but I think that's more about finding the right bean and grind combination than the machine itself. Both the single and double shot brewed to the expected volume consistently, which shows the machine is performing correctly. One last thing I have to mention is the color. I got mine in Creamy, which is a really nice off-white tone. It's a refreshing break from the standard chrome machines you see everywhere and looks great on the counter. The Kismile comes with everything you need to get started: a built-in grinder, multiple filter options, a milk frothing jug, a metal tamp, and several cleaning tools. If you're new to espresso and want a machine that gives you room to learn and experiment, this one is worth a look. I haven't nailed my perfect shot yet, but I plan to keep experimenting with different beans and grind settings.

My love for coffee has grown exponentially over the last 10 years or so. I started out drinking just hot coffee in the morning. I then tried iced coffee for the first time and all of a sudden I stopped drinking hot coffee altogether and just drank iced for many years. Recently though, I tried espresso for the first time in my life and after one cup of that I am hooked. I wanted my own espresso machine so I could enjoy one of these delicious espressos whenever I have a craving for one. I went online to look at home espresso machines. There are so many to choose from that I started to get overwhelmed. I wanted one that was a minimum 9-bar, one that was very user friendly as I have never owned an espresso machine before, and one that made sense financially. After doing the research I decided on this Kismile espresso machine. First, it is rated as a 20-bar. What the ‘bar’ means is the pressure required to force the hot water through the compacted coffee grounds. According to everything I read, the ideal number for a perfect espresso is 9. When a machine advertises a higher number, it is usually just a reference to the actual maximum capacity of the attached pump. Second, this is a very user friendly machine. The selection panel has four buttons – power, grind, single, and double. Plus, there is a dial to choose hot water or steam, depending on what type of beverage you are making. You can choose from latte, cappuccino, espresso, Americano, or cold extract. There are lots to choose from. I personally had never owned a machine like this before, so there was some trial and error involved. I used the included user manual a lot, and the video on the product page for some help a couple of times. The more I use it, the better I get at making a delicious espresso. Third, while doing my online research, I saw many machines that cost thousands of dollars. These were high use, commercial grade machines that you would see in a coffee shop. Naturally I needed something smaller as I will only be using mine once, maybe twice per day. This Kismile was only $311, which to me was a fantastic value for the money. Putting it into perspective, if you bought 60 espressos at $5 each, that would equal the cost of this Kismile. So, as long as you get 60 beverages out of this machine, you would break even. Having been able to handle this machine I am convinced this is a durable piece of equipment, and a high quality small appliance. I feel like I will make my money back on this machine many times over as it should last a long time. I can’t say enough positives about this machine. Everything you need in order to make a tasty cup of espresso is included. It comes with the pressurized funnel, a pressurized single and double-cup filter, a non-pressurized single and double-cup filter, a small cleaning brush, a milk cup for frothing, a tamper, and a tool box. The machine measures 16 x 11.5 x 13 inches tall, so it is not overly large, but it is powerful. There is an attached grinder, which is awesome, and if you like frothing milk, this machine will do that too. I would definitely recommend this to all coffee and espresso lovers.
