  • Superb bit of kit
It was dull overcast but it was charging merrily away; So far it’s just been tried in my 20 / 10 Amp back up chargers (5 V) but works very well considering Electricity is £0.35 pKW. Bought for Ham Radio to run a few 10 watt transceivers so looking forward to getting it in the field. WTS

  • Backup for the backup just in case
while we have a gas powered generator large enough to power the house we can only store so much gas safely. with the virus outbreak i have tried to think of anything that could be needed in advance. i already had a couple small older low power panels, not light or flexible, at most to power something like a small window fan. but the power needed to charge up something more 'juice hungry' like my laptop, her phone, my note10+, tablets, even my backup battery bricks? for those items i needed something with more power output. the first thing i looked for was power output for the dollar. then narrowed down my search based on customer feedback. this was the only set up i saw that had a large number of reviews and all were five stars. the panels arrived folded up small and neatly only about the size of two paperback books placed end to end. the panels fold out easily with no indication of parts that could weaken and or break after multiple folds. related i saw no quality control problems whatsoever. it comes with a number of adapters mostly 'round' style ones. one of those did fit into my laptop just fine. you have just the two power outlets. one usb the other for use with the included adapters. if you have a usb C device you will need to get a USB C to std USB adapter. otherwise just plug in any standard usb cable and you are good to go. we haven't had many bright sunny days since i received mine but there have been a couple. my phone is a galaxy note10+ with a 4300 mAh battery. at home i use the included 25W fast charger. i knew with that charger at home i could get a 15% charge in 13 minutes time. in the full sun connected to the panel without the fast charger it only took me a little longer 21 minutes to get 15%. as said that is without the fast charger so i was impressed. i have hooked it up to my laptop too. for that test i had to get creative to keep the pc out of the sun and shaded but i had great results again. my battery had drawn down to 20% when i started the test. i walked away to do other things came back about three hours later and that had gone up to 80% charging via the side port. FYI due to the design you don't need to unfold the entire thing to use. granted you won't get as much power but unlike other systems that cut out completely unless the entire panel is getting light, this one won't do that. be it for an emergency or recreational use this is the best solar device i have owned to date. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. ... show more

  • WANTED TO BE A FAN BOY But
real life use and evaluation of the Kingsolar Solar Charger 40W Portable Solar Panel proved to be a disappointment. 3 Stars would be gracious; BUT, considering the nature of my disappointments, the quality, features, and especially the relative price I bumped it up by 1. HOWEVER!! As a 20 Watt Solar Panel, (Under mostly ideal conditions), I would have given it a VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 5 Stars. I purchased the unit after reviewing available products in this power range. My primary application was to be recharging a Jackery 240 during Grid Down/Off Grid Situations. Secondarily was to recharge various other electronic devices/Power Banks. The BEST charging rate I have achieved into the Jackery is about 20 Watts as displayed on the Jackery Power meter. That is by placing the panel on my SUV, so I could leave the 240 locked inside. That rate is with good alignment to bright Noon-early afternoon sun. Measuring change in charge levels over several hours time it appears the actual charging level under real world direct sun light is more about 14 Watts. I had hoped to be able to recharged the 240 with 8-10 hours of good sun light not 2 plus days. I live in a multiple story apartment with SE facing windows and was also hoping to charge for several hours in the morning sun. With the less than ideal sun alignment, UV filters of energy efficient windows and shadow of window frame pieces, that didn't work well. The solar panel does work well at charging cell phone, smart watch, & other small devices when placed horizontal in a open window even though alignment is less than Ideal and the panel has to have a slight accordion fold to fit against the screen. I have also noted that it will charge the cell phone during test outside on the SUV on a very overcast day when aligned with where the sun would be. I am keeping this unit because I believe it will achieved many of my needs for emergency backup if I have a very unlikely extended grid down/off grid situation and good sun light. There are many features I like better than I believe I would with competitive units. I like the size, (both folded and open), and format; they are very convenient for my application. The appearance is of a excellent very high quality product. I like the dual output of USB charging port as well as 18 Volt with a large set of adapters for many products. Most Solar Panels are overpriced based economical production of electrical power but this unit is somewhat better than the peers. Considering I would have to pay about 3 times as much for a panel I liked less to meet my potential power requirements, this is still my best choice. In summary; I highly recommend this unit based on quality, features, and price if all you need is to charge a cell phone or similar device over half a day of good sun light; but, only with extreme patience for higher power requirements. ... show more

  • Great folding panel, later models missing gromets though.
I recently buight a 3rd panel to use while camping at the Winnipeg Folk Festival for use with a group camp for showers (water pump), LED lights, and up to 6 USB devices charging at a time. I used a Victron 100/20 MPPT controller and 3 Dakota Lithum 23AH LiPo4 batteries in parrellel, with the panels in series, and they worked quite well. I built a frame using some bamboo poles, and I tried lashing the 4 grommets from each panel on top and bottow to be able to tilt the panels somewhat. I was surprised that the penel I bought thes year only has two grommets, versus the ones I got just before the pandemic shut things down. I was able to kind of got the one minus gromets mounted, but it should have gromets for this. I will either add my own or use tarp clamps next year. With the Victron, I was able to get stats on max power and voltage. Most days had at least some sun and batteries were mostly kept near full. OVer 4 days of use I saw 115w max, 97.25 watts average, so acceptably close to the rated power. ... show more
