I got this for my daughter who likes to read before bed. She often would fall asleep with her light still on. She loves this little device. Her teachers let her bring it to school since it doesn't have any games or distractions. She's started discovering a lot of new books that she can get for free and searches the store on her own for her friends' recommendations. The other day she let me know that her friend told her the book "Matilda" was better than the movie and she immediately went searching for it. It's only available via purchase, so when she clicked on it the request came to my email for me to approve quickly and easily. It's really expanded her ability to find new books on her own without waiting to be taken to the bookstore. There's a lot of parental controls available that are easy to configure. All the same reasons I love my kindle apply to hers. She can take her whole library with her anywhere. She can try a lot of books for free with Kids+, the same way I have Kindle Unlimited. She can get new books wherever there's wifi and at any time of the day. She can read in the car at night. She doesn't lose her spot. The battery lasts a very long time. ... show more

I wish I loved this product. But I can say that I regret this purchase and would strongly recommend checking into other options if you are considering it. I bought one for my 8 year old and one for my 6 year old. I'll break down my complaints into 3 parts: platform, content, and technology. Parent Platform: The parent platform where you can select and de-select books/content is archaic at best and seems designed to frustrate and even prevent selecting content for your kids to read. The search tool is finicky and you have to enter just the right keyword to find what you're looking for. It is NOT intuitive. It reminds me of a much hated HR platform I used to have to use at work. Terrible. Consider all of the tech advances I am disappointed that none of them have found their way to this platform. Content Most kids books look like they were scanned in and the writing is too small for my little one to see easily, which is not ideal for someone still learning to read. You'd think the touch screen would solve this problem, but it freezes regularly and has a delay that is frustrating at best. Despite the age settings on my younger daughter's account, I found her reading a graphic novel about middle school romance... her age limits are 4-7. Really Amazon??? I also cannot sync the kindle to any library books. Apparently kindle works with exactly 1 (one) library platform, so if you want to borrow library books on your kindle, check with the local library before you drop over $100 on a device where you have to pay each time you kid wants a specific book. It seems that there are several books in a series available on the free Amazon kids membership that comes with this device, but if you want the whole series, you have to search it down and pay for the books that are not on the membership that you buy when you purchase this device. If I were being pessimistic, I would suspect that this was intentional. Device I love my own kindle (ancient, 7th edition) but it seems that there is zero progress from that edition to this one. Like the title of my review says, klunky. The way the library is viewed on this device actually makes finding books harder. There is no place to see them all listed. The kids have to search for a title by typing it in the search bar. Not an easy thing for the kids to do, which results in them seeking out a parent to set it up for them. My older daughter's device shuts down on her regularly. It just seems poorly made. Conclusion Don't buy this thing. I regularly refer to these as the "expensive electronic garbage pits." UPDATE: Even worse! I bought several kindle books through my Amazon account and then shared them with my child's device through the parent portal. They are visible on my kindle and on my account but they are not showing up and cannot be downloaded (again KLUNKY - I have to perform 3-4 steps to get my children the books they want). So now I have a copy of "The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat" which my child cannot access. BTW, this is not user error - I can download 4 of the 7 books I purchased. Great. ... show more

I traded two previous paperwhite models (2019 & 2021) and decided to buy this “kids” one on sale, which may be viewed as a downgrade to some but it worked out perfectly for my needs. This is advertised as a kids model but it’s actually a 2022 kindle basic with 16gb storage, no ads, and a cover included. Just cancel the included kid’s subscription and you’ve got a great kindle bundle for an amazing deal! The slight blurring from “flush” screen of the paperwhite always gave me a headache but I don’t have that problem with this kindle as the text is very crisp and clean. It is very lightweight without the cover and very durable without the cover also. I just toss it in my bag and go. I use a popsocket on it and can read comfortably for hours. It’s compact without takinc away from the reading experience and am absolutely viewing this as an upgrade from my heavier & slightly blurry paperwhite. Back lighting on this is more than sufficient and dark mode is superb. Don’t fall for the “gotta have that warm backlight” fallacy. It’s really not necessary enough to pay higher price for the new paperwhite. Highly recommend this “paperwhite mini” for anyone who loves reading and also loves a good bargain. ... show more

This works similar to an adult kindle. The screen can be small at times for trying to read picture books but it can zoom. The zoom can be a little difficult to adjust. The biggest issue I have is that her content will disappear sporadically. (3 times in an hour today). This does not appear to be specific to the device but with the Amazon kids setting as reviews of previous versions also had this issue. In Order to fix it, It requires logging out of the kids version and logging back in. Not a hard thing to do, but annoying for both the reader and parent when it’s occurring frequently. I’m surprised kindle hasn’t addressed this issue yet. Overall a great device if you like reading on kindles but some painful quirks. I had previously downloaded books and they showed up in her account, but haven’t purchased anything new since reading on this device. Was a Christmas gift for my 8 year old son. We ordered the underwater cover, came on time and cover is as described. Little smaller then I anticipated but it’s the right size for a child. It came with a 1 year free subscription for books and linked to my account. My son loves it! He’s a big reader an has been blowing through chapters books this year so this was a big hit. It’s the last thing he puts down and the first thing he wants in the morning. Would highly recommend for young readers. ... show more
