  • My First Water Softener
Color: Gray Size: Softener / 40,000 Grain
Initial opinion of the water softener is 5 stars. Will update if this changes later. The product arrived in good condition and was very pleased with the deluxe delivery with the crew taking away the boxes and plastic after taking it into my basement. Setup was intuitive and easy if you have a basic understanding of plumbing. I'm not a plumber and it took 60-ish minutes to redo my three filter and UV setup to route into and out of the unit. I followed a video that was part of the QR code that doubled as your set of instructions for water and salt adding and the initial regeneration cycle. That regen cycle took 90 minutes and have me time to clean up. Unit is silent when in use. I guess that's normal. My first water softener so I don't really know. The regen cycle is louder, but it's not overpowering. The water has been softened by a large margin. I feel that slippery feel of soft water when showering or washing hands. Was not like that previously. Again, my first one do I think it's working right. Make sure you can drain the system properly based upon local codes. I had to install a P trap to existing plumbing (with air gap) to send water out to septic during regeneration. This is more advanced in terms of plumbing but it worked out very well in the end. The drain hose was about half the length needed so I had to buy more. Not a deal breaker, but annoying. What I liked: Looks good. Works well. Easy as can be installation for DIYers. Easy setup and use of control panel. No salty taste from fridge water. What I didn't care for: Needing QR code instead of a booklet for instructions. Very short drain line. Video showing installing the unit may not be your unit that was purchased. ... show more

  • Do not recommend
Color: Gray Size: Softener / 40,000 Grain
Just had a professional install and it’s a dud!!! Power to the unit is fine but clearly a bad circuit board!!! My mistake thinking it would be an easy flip. The unit I was replacing was 25 years old which is why I chose to go with another Kenmore. Was hopeful that this would be an easy replacement but that would be too much to ask! Now I am left with mutable bills with a repair….would not recommend! ... show more

  • Kenmore 420 is better than Kenmore Elite Water Softener
Color: Gray Size: Softener / 40,000 Grain
We had a Kenmore Elite Water Softener for about 15 years (from 2010 to 2025) and it worked great, but finally decided to upgrade to the Kenmore 420P (we don't know that the "P" stands for) in November 2025. So, after installation, which was very easy (although not all the fittings for the Kenmore 420P matched the Kenmore Elite), our water was down from about 35 GPG to 5 GPG in a matter of just a few hours. What we really like about this "upgrade" to the Kenmore 420P is that water pressure is much better and more consistent than it was with the Kenmore Elite. The Kenmore 420P is a bit more expensive (about $850) but well worth the investment. Yay! ... show more

  • Don't buy if you expect decent warranty support
Color: Gray Size: Softener / 40,000 Grain
I purchased the 420 model to replace an identical 7 year old Kenmore softener that quit working. The new model cost almost double what I paid for the old one at Sears. The new one started leaking at the top of the resin tank immediately after I turned on the water after installation. After a week of phone calls and e-mails to Kenmore customer support (there is no longer a number to call for warranty repairs/support) the leak still exists and I have not received any useful assistance. Kenmore customer support keeps sending me information to help to dismantle the unit so I can tell them exactly what the problem is. If the problem is something like bad seals or improperly installed seals, they will send me new ones. However, they expect me to replace them. I am not a plumber and this is not appropriate warranty support. If I take the unit apart and mess something up, the warranty won't cover the damage. Since Sears is no longer in business (I never had a problem getting warranty support from Sears), Kenmore is no longer providing the same level of support that Sears provided. If you expect any adequate level of support, definitely do not buy a Kenmore product. They say they have a warranty, but won't send anyone to do the warranty work. Update: Today I received an e-mail stating that they have ordered the needed parts (not described) and gave me the name and number of a service company that will install the parts, which should arrive in one to two weeks. ... show more
