    • Don't buy if you expect decent warranty support
I purchased the 420 model to replace an identical 7 year old Kenmore softener that quit working. The new model cost almost double what I paid for the old one at Sears. The new one started leaking at the top of the resin tank immediately after I turned on the water after installation. After a week of phone calls and e-mails to Kenmore customer support (there is no longer a number to call for warranty repairs/support) the leak still exists and I have not received any useful assistance. Kenmore customer support keeps sending me information to help to dismantle the unit so I can tell them exactly what the problem is. If the problem is something like bad seals or improperly installed seals, they will send me new ones. However, they expect me to replace them. I am not a plumber and this is not appropriate warranty support. If I take the unit apart and mess something up, the warranty won't cover the damage. Since Sears is no longer in business (I never had a problem getting warranty support from Sears), Kenmore is no longer providing the same level of support that Sears provided. If you expect any adequate level of support, definitely do not buy a Kenmore product. They say they have a warranty, but won't send anyone to do the warranty work. Update: Today I received an e-mail stating that they have ordered the needed parts (not described) and gave me the name and number of a service company that will install the parts, which should arrive in one to two weeks. ... show more

We replaced our old one, used this model to prefit similar model, take out old, push in new, then setup, but the system did not do well, it did not pump ot the water level I had started with, It keeps filling up to top with water

    • I like the 420, but this one leaked on install
This is our third Kenmore 420. Each of the previous models lasted about 10-11 years before needing to be replaced. I like the unit. It does a good job and is fairly easy to install. I was a bit uneasy buying this through Amazon, but with no local Sears store anymore I had no choice. It arrived quickly and the Amazon driver kindly placed it near our cellar door. I unpacked it and immediately noticed that the build quality was not like the older units. It feels lighter and a bit flimsy. The brine well was also filled with a lot of miscellaneous scrap plastic bits probably left over from the manufacturing process. Quality control must have been on break on the day this unit was made. I vacuumed them out and wiped the well clean. I had it installed and ready to go in an hour or so. I turned it on .... and it leaked. Specifically it leaked between the resin tank and the main housing. I disassembled it and reassembled it and it still leaked. Did it again this time using pipe dope of the gaskets. Still leaking. I called Kenmore tech support, who by the way was FANTASTIC. They determined that I was in fact missing a gasket and they would send one out under warranty. In the mean time, I took the old 420 apart and used a gasket from that machine to get this new one working. It seems fine now and the Kenmore tech folks were great, but any issue with a new piece of equipment is frustrating. ... show more

Well packaged and in good condition even though it was delivered inverted. Install instructions were good. It replaced a 12 year old Kenmore that had a tank leak. All fit well and it has operated as anticipated with Kenmore products. My older unit would have been repairable for use. Salt tank leak was reason to replacement. Salt tank overflowed a/c clogged venturie orifice and stress probably caused small tank leak. Replaced with a NEW unit, with new resiin, new valving and new control panel, that would have needed replacement. So far, so good. ... show more

One problem we ran into is that the electric cord provided was missing the metal tines. It was just a defective cord. Had to use the cord from the old water softener.

    • Arrived damaged, thought I fixed correctly
This was shipped on its side and I thought I put it together correctly. Turns out the brine float is missing parts and the tank fills up with water. I tried to fix it to no avail. Need to order parts to correct.
