Description

Packed with convenient features, this Kegco 6.5 Gallon Wide Mouth Glass Carboy is the perfect fermentation vessel for 5 gallon batches! It features a 6" wide mouth that allows you to easily reach inside of the jar to clean and add or remove ingredients. Glass jars have a smooth surface that does not scratch easily, helping to prevent nasty odors and tastes. These carboys will not break down over time, so they can provide decades of superior performance if handled with care. This jar has enough head space above the surface of 5 gallons of liquid to allow foamy kraeusen to form on top of the beer. It features a plastic lid that creates an airtight seal on the jar and has a recessed area with a removable cap that lets you install an airlock to release gasses during fermentation. We've included nylon straps that help make transporting the glass container simpler and safer.

  • Great Carboy (no need to buy traditional neck)
I've bought the 5.5 gallon wide mouth carboy and use it for home brewing. I’ve used buckets (long ago for a short while), and traditional glass carboys and this product is by far and away better. This allows for easy cleaning. My hands can easily get in with a paper towel or rag to wipe down the krausen (crud left over from fermentation), and easy to sanitize from there. The large mouth allows it to fill and drain quickly saving time on clean up. The handy straps help make it easy to move around and easier on the hand then the orange handle I’ve used in the past on traditional glass carboys. The lid is very well thought out. It has a nice gasket to interface with the glass. I used the built in air lock and when it was in place it worked great. When I moved the carboy some of the sanitizer liquid (i.e. Star San) spilled out. This was resolved when I added more Star San. So if you’re moving it be careful and if you’re moving it a lot use a traditional airlock which doesn’t spill as easily. I have two glass carboys and now this one. I plan on buying a 2nd 5.5 gallon wide mouth carboy so I can go from primary to secondary in this style. I bought just the one to try it out before committing to the style. So if you’re coming from buckets to glass this is the preferred path. Also if you already have traditional glass carboys this is worth the upgrade to either increase capacity, or simply to make brewing easier. 7/20/17 Update I now have two of the 5.5 gallon wide mouth carboy's and a 7 gallon wide mouth carboy. The 7 gallon carboy came with an improved gasket. The gasket was a plastic/rubber material and works better than the original gasket (which was more of a foam material). The plastic/rubber material is much easier to clean since it feels stronger and less likely to break. I usually only seal one carboy at a time so I just move the cover and gasket to the active carboy. If anyone from Kegco is reading this I'd readily accept two more plastic/rubber gaskets! The 7 gallon carboy let me do a double IPA and have enough head room for dry hopping. The recipe called for brewing and initially fermenting 6 gallons of wort. They accounted for the loss when transferring to secondary. ... show more

  • A surprising update to brewing carboys
I rarely do reviews, but this impressed me enough to do so. First off: The packaging is far superior to any glassware that I ever bought & had shipped to me before and since. Double boxed shipping cardboard, then Styrofoam sheets, followed by a third cardboard box, then finally encased in bubblewrap. Second point: The glass jugs are shorter than I expected, but are slightly wider than traditional carboys of similar rated volume. The glass walling is not as thick as I had expected, thus making the container fairly light. But the the glass is still thick enough to do what it is meant to. But I wouldn't be too rough on them for this reason, not that you should ever be rough with any glassware. The included carry strap rig is a blessing for moving it around. Third point: The lid has features that I admire & am concerned about already. The lid is plastic, though it's not too thin, I feel that the side walls for the threading could be thicker for increased durability. This lid has silicone / rubber gasket which makes an incredible good seal, but is also a bear to get the lid on & off. I would recommend a strap wrench for tightening / loosening the lid to / from the carboy. The date dial is neat & distinctive feature that saves me from having to mark on the side of the jug for a starting date. Just twist the two disks to line up with the arrow on the lid to set the brewing start date. The lid also has a resessed area around the plug for filling with water to be used with an venting cap. This is a nice alternative option in case one doesn't have a twin air bung with an appropriate sized stopper. Finally: As one would imagine, this has a wide enough opening that cleaning, sifting contents, and other activities that requires one to get inside the jug are a breeze. This feature alone is what sold me on trying out the product. And so far I am satisfied with my purchase. chances are good that I will be purchasing more of these in the future. ... show more

  • Garbage
Size: 7.1 Gallon Color: Clear
DO NOT BUT!!!!!! I've waited a while to write a review on this because I really wanted to give it a try. Honestly, my thoughts on this product are: Garbage. Do not buy this cheap manufactured carboy. I do t trust the glass and the seal is NOT air tight. The hole at the top is not a standard size so you'll have to find one that fits from a local brew supplier. I fermented 5 other batches at the same time. All of which showed activity through their bubblers. Because I saw no activity, I over fed with germaid o and go ferm and pitched twice. Finally I racked to a typical carboy and saw bubbler activity immediately. But in doing so I risked stalling and exposing my musk to oxygen. So if your looking to waste money on a carboy and possibly having to toss a $120 batch of wine buy this. Otherwise just buy another one that you wo t throw away. ... show more
