  • Different brand?
Received a box that is clearly from the QFENG brand despite a small sticker on the side "rebranding" it as kapaini. This should dfeinitely be in the description somewhere. Amazon also really messed up on the shipping of this item although I'm not taking any stars off for this. The first time I received a delivered notification, I only received an unpadded envelope. Amazon did make it easy to get a replacement shipped out, so kudos, but then they shipped the replacement in an unpadded envelope. The product itself is basically just the body of the plane and the blade alongside it, shipped in a flimsy cardboard box, so during shipping in an unpadded container the product worked it's way out the box and one of the cardboard flaps was torn somewhat. Because of the weird brand issue I was already considering returning it, but I also took a look at the product in case it turned out to be worth keeping despite that. The general design of the QFENG plane looks very similar to the one in the product description, but includes a brand mark on the top side of the body. The bottom face of the plane looks flat, but holding a ruler to the bottom shows that it's significantly enough out of true to need probably an hour of work on some sandpaper+glass plate. Test fitting the wedge only locked it into place on one half of the blade. It probably could also be fixed with a bit of work either on the wedge or on the body. The chip breaker is a bent piece of metal but generally looked ok to my inexperienced eyes. Honestly, for ~$21 it's probably a reasonable project for someone who wants to get a cheap handplane to work. If that's what you are looking for then I think it's a totally reasonable purchase and have fun! In most cases I would probably be up for it. However, when you combine all the flaws, the weird brand issues and all the headaches related to just getting the product, I'm taking it as a sign to look elsewhere. ... show more

  • Lot of sensitivity for a low cost
This plane performs as good as any and the unique steering handle and very open shaving escapement area allows you to aim and observe the shavings you make; thus if there are any spots you need to lower, you simply aim and steer while adjusting your downward pressure accordingly; it’s intuitive and low and close to the wood ... show more

  • Enjoyable to use; good value
I have an assortment of hand planes in my workshop, but the only wooden plane I had were old, handmade, and not really useable, so I was glad to give this plane a try. The body of this plane is about 11" long and fashioned of a dense hardwood. It seems to be finished with some type of oil. There is a metal insert (copper or brass, maybe) on the leading edge of the mouth. The bottom is very flat but not polished. It slides smoothly over the workpiece. The blade is mounted at about 45 degrees with the bevel down. The bevel is ground very flat at an angle of 30 degrees. I value a polished edge on planes and chisels, and I expect some upfront work to get a tool "tuned up." The amount of work is usually inversely related to the tool's price. For this blade, about 30 minutes on lapping film on a glass plate got the inch or so nearest the edge flat and polished. I didn't have to resort to the "dime trick." Another 15 minutes or so on waterstones and I had a razor sharp, mirror-finished edge. Not bad. There is a conventional chip breaker mounted on top of the blade. The chip breaker fit flat against the blade with no gaps, so I didn't need to do anything more to it. The chip breaker is about 1/16" narrower than the plane blade. It should be the same width as the blade. The blade/chip breaker assembly fits into the plane body and is held in place with a wood wedge. There is no screw adjustment like you would find on most metal planes, so you have to find a reliable way to adjust depth of cut. I'm still learning, but I sit the plane on a flat bench, insert the blade so it just touches the bench, then tap the wedge in place. An additional tap on the wedge or the end or the end of the blade will usually get what I want. Functionally, this plane works well for the same chores for which I'd use a smoothing plane or a slightly longer jack plane. That's not surprising, because its length is between those two "regular" planes. It is much lighter than a metal plan and pleasant to use as long as I set it for a very thin shaving. I'm not ready to replace all my bench planes, but I am enjoying using this, and it seems like a good value. ... show more

  • Mid-Range Quality Tool, Good For The Price
This is a bit different then traditional woodworking planes, and I have to admit I still don't fully understand the ergonomics of it yet. Unlike most of the western variants, this has side handles. It's a bit like bike riding it. I just haven't figured out yet how to apply consistent pressure and keep a smooth motion. So often I just grab it the (for me) traditional way when I start getting annoyed. The quality of the wood is okay. From what it looks like it's stained and oiled (I am not too sure about the stained part), what makes it look more expensive than it is. The finish is a bit rough. Careful sanding with very fine sandpaper makes it feel much better. I think for anyone who is in the starting phase of getting into traditional woodworking this is a good purchase - or gift. Looking around what tools other areas of the world have to offer is always worth it. It requires a lot of care, adjustment, and sharpening. So if that's not for you, that's fine. There is no shame in mixing hand- and power tools. Plenty of other interesting tools out there. I hope this helps to make a decision ... show more
