Pretty good for the price

I’m no expert on Ukuleles -- ask me about guitars, I’ve owned a dozen or more. But this is my first uke, bought somewhat on a whim, and I wasn’t sure what to expect for my modest cash outlay. Now that I’ve spent a little time playing it -- and comparing it to other ukes in local music stores -- here are a few observations: 1) I’ve picked up baritone ukes that sound richer, and have a nicer feel. But they cost at least 50 percent more, on up. 2) As shipped, it needed to be set up and the action lowered. That’s to be expected. And after that was taken care of locally, the instrument was much more playable. Not as good as some, but decent. 3) It stays in tune reasonably well. 4) The fact that a hard case, tuner and other accessories were included in the deal was part of the reason I went for it, since otherwise I’d have had to buy those separately. I was concerned, though about how the uke fit in the case supplied. It seemed to slide and knock around a bit. I ended up adding a small piece of one-inch foam between the bottom of the uke and the case. Now it fits fine. 5) My verdict that it was decent quality for the price seemed to be shared by the guys at the music store that set it up, who I presume would have rather sold me one of theirs. I bought a baritone uke partly because I travel from time to time, and it seemed an alternative to lugging one of my full-sized guitars. I considered a “travel guitar” instead, but the ones I like are twice the price of this uke. Now that I’m playing the thing and listening to other uke players, I’ve come to appreciate it on its own terms. If I had it to do over? I might have opted to spend more money on an instrument I could really fall in love with, sound-wise and aesthetically. Still, I’m not disappointed -- just not delighted. ... show more

Action is a bit high, requires bridge remoal and sanding down. As for the seller, they do not do a good job of filling an order. First order, they sent strap, bariton yuke and case for a tenor . No tuner, No DVD. I sent it qll back & re=ordered. Second order arrived with correct Uke and case, a tuner and an allen wrencj, no strap, no DVD. Seller does not seem to use a "packing slip", the use of which might solve their shipping situation. ... show more

I was surprised by my experience with this unit, versus the prior reveiws. Generally, it is what I expected, on quick overview and look at it while unpacking it. And, for the price point, again, --good value, I agree if NO issues --there are. However, there were sever Quality Assurance Issues others may not be aware of, experienced enough to know of, consider, and do have what I have here, that I comment here, but are unaware of it. First, the tone -- for me, my ear, it was 6 - 7 out of 10. It was marginal for me. I may have otherwise kept it if not for the following. Now, the issue -- this unit does come with a Truss Rod in the Neck, -- which is excellent. However, the Hex Nut End located in the Sound Hole, was, as it appears, as **installed off center, sideways, and **crushing into the top; into the Underside of the Soundboard. I attempt to include pictures to show this. The pictures are **"flattering" ... it actually looks MORE off center in person (worse, the cheap phone Lens may be effecting this). And, the Truss Rod I am sure, I'd have to pry it down to get a Hex-wrench in it. Remember, it's to the side, so would not be sure if would WARP the neck to the Treble Side if tightened, or on it's own, in time. I would not want to put Sideways pressure for any reason out of concern for Twisting. As I see this, the only way for this to occur as in the Pics, is, it was installed this way, and crushed into the top soundboard. There was not Truss Rod Hex Wrench included and would not have tried to use it anyway, --but, if you see the wood left in the hole, and "if" I could get the wrench on it, -- I would be very concerned with the result. The Case is 6 of 10. The inside lid was warped. The Tuner was left to bounce freely in the case and the case, is not "heavy duty", but OK value, I guess for the Price Point. My issue is, -- within minutes of turning it up, and looking it over, I saw this issue with the Truss Rod. No one at Kala saw it, thought to fix it, or not let this one leave the factory? How many others? -- Well, we can only guess. And, you-all would need to check your units to see. Or if you ever tried to adjust your Truss rod and had issues, well, you may not have seen "this" - first. Fortunately, it's an Amazon Purchase, so returns are not an issue and I am protected. However, I am "done" with online instrument purchases for a while. I know Amazon would stick with me. But, it's a return/refund, no exchange. I am not ready to do yet another online search and repurchase. It takes a lot of time too. I have to say, add, that this Baritone, compared to my Tenor Ukulele with a Solid Sitka Spruce top, just, --was marginal in comparison to the Tenor size. Yes, the sheer size of the Baritone gave the bit more of bass boominess, --but the "tone", the overtones, the "sweetness" was not there. It has a funny overtone, and a bit dead. Since is a Laminated Top, I knew "this" was "it". I'll add, yes per other reveiws, the Action is a bit high. But, honestly to shave the Saddle is, for me, nothing to do, not an issue. But, it ma be for you if you have to pay for it. Actually, it looked like it had a Spacer to remove ? ... but, immediately repacked it for return so can not say more than this concerning that. ... show more
