Great meter but terrible test leads

This Kaiweets HT206D clamp multimeter is great - I love it. For $48 it is a best buy. {{It competes well with my several hundred dollars Fluke multimeter. My biggest issue with Fluke is their probes are outrageously priced, but their meters are excellent.}} I have tested all functions, and it works very well. The clamping ammeter is a real plus. This is now my go-to meter for everyday projects. I like the fact that it uses two AAA batteries. I hate rechargeable anything and avoid them like the plague they are –always discharged when you need them most and you need to wait to recharge them. Not this meter – just slip in two new AAA batteries and you are good to go. Half the leads (mainly the fine pointed ones) that come with the meter, however, are crap and so is the optional Kaiweets 23-piece multimeter test lead kit. These have connectivity issues with either high ohms or ohms that continuously jump all over the place. They are held in place via a crimp and the conductivity is awful. The Kaiweets vendor replaced the 23-piece kit for me, but the replacement had the same conductivity issues. Save yourself time and aggravation, get a good lead set for this. I wasted a few weeks thinking the meter was bad when it was bad probes. These are the probes I ultimately settled on as excellent for this Kaiweets clamping multimeter: the Snakol 22-Piece Multimeter Test Lead Kit and the Bionso 25-Piece Multimeter Leads Kit - both at about the same price as the malfunctioning Kaiweets test probe kit. The main difference is the Snakol has longer probe handles which I like. I am using both sets, however. All the probes in these two sets have great conductivity and no issues and they fit the Kaiweets HT206D clamp multimeter. They give stable readings of 0-to-0.1-ohms. The main issue with these, however, is the probes need to be screwed into place with a wrench or needle nose pliers making changing probes more difficult. On the other hand, this is likely why they give such good conductivity. However, you can buy multiple sets so you can permanently set up the probes you use most frequently. Some of the other probes in the set are the plug-in type so they be changed easily and these have excellent conductivity as well. I find these two kits give me all the probes I need and more.

First impressions after 2 weeks of use. This meter does almost everything I need. Voltage and resistance readings are spot on. Capacitance readings seem accurate down to 10 pf. AC RMS voltage readings seem accurate. The ability to hold peak readings is a nice feature. The main limitation is current readings. AC current readings seem reasonably accurate (of course you need to place only 1 wire in the clamp. However DC current readings (in the 100 mA range) were inconsistent even after nullify out the stray magnetic fields with the "zero" button. Unfortunately there is no direct way to measure mA currents using the probes. (In one case I just put a 1 ohm resistor in series with the circuit and measured the voltage. As long as the current is less than 1 A, a 1 W resistor should suffice.) The auto power off function is nice, but the only way I found to turn the meter back on is to turn the function knob to "off" and restart. I found the thermocouple useful for checking the temperature of a power resistor. (I had no idea that they could hit 130 C while operating within their rated power!) All in all, I would recommend this unit for an advanced hobbyist.

I must state that I am NOT a professional electrician nor am I an electrician by trade. I am a technology enthusiast. I design and deploy networks, hardware installations, repairs and personnel software provisioning. I needed to add a digital clamp meter to my growing tools set. A clamp meter because I want to be able to measure amperage as well. I needed something capable, durable and with a decent amount of functionality. This came up in my search and then I moved on to investigating it through YouTube reviews. My dad was a service technician so I had an idea of some of the functions that I wanted. This HT206D is impressive. As an artist and someone nearly obsessed with design, I appreciate its form and the colours are lovely. Predominantly red and black with white and orange for labelling and one grey rubber button. The clamp is firm and while I thought I would have had a reservation about the body being made of plastic instead of rubber, it turns out it is a non issue. I have big hands so nearly everything is relatively small in them. This is small to me and also very comfortable. The way a little of the circumference of the dial overlaps the edge of the tester, it is easier to use for a one handed operation which makes it convenient for you to use your other hand to manage the probes, which, are very decent quality. The cables are soft and pliable so there is virtually no resistance in getting them to the contacts that you're trying to reach. The overall boil of this is sturdy and has no feeling of cheapness or anyone cutting corners to compromise on anything. The features are as good as the best I can guess. Firstly, this is a Direct Current AND Alternating Current tester. You don't have to chose between having one or the other. The display is big and clearly visible. Even if ambient lighting is not sufficient for you, backlight facilitates clear, legible readings all the time. If you want a comprehensive list of the features, they are listed here on the amazon page, as well as numerous other sites with reviews. I must add though, that the thermometer is a really nice additional peripheral. I can't say for now what cases I can think of where I will have need for it but it is an additional value. Like I stated earlier, I am not an electrician by trade. However, the data I have seen others collect on other forums, compared to more finely tuned instruments, are only dissimilar by a negligible margin and personally, they align with what is expected. In addition to this being an AC/DC tester, I bought it because of the 600 Volt capacity. I can say with certainty that I will NOT find myself in any environment needing a higher capacity than that. My home uses 110/115 volts with 220 volts for a small number of appliances. My car has a 12 volt battery and my alternator gives me close to 15 volts. Not to mention that the everyday consumer electronics dont consume much electricity or produce any power to even reach have of what this can test. It was a comfortable buy and if you're an every day person, a hobbyist or even a professional, the capabilities of this tester will not come up short of what you require.

When building a solar array it's important to know amperage.

I'm building a solar array for the house just to see how well it works and to see what the costs are for the DIYer. I've got a couple multimeters but they don't read DC amps and DC is what solar panels put out. So I bought this one. The Kaiweets HT206D and it read DC amps. Very handy for this task. It's easy to use, instructions are well written and comprehensive covering all aspects of this meter. Has a lot of the features I've seen on meters that cost way, way more. It's going to be handy working on cars also. It has a large, easy to read display, thermocouple (type K) for temps, resistance and impedance capabilities and a case to pack it all around in. Quite versatile and seems well made. I didn't go wrong with this meter.

Feels well made and fits nice in my hand. Comes in a box with a soft material case, black and red electrical probes, thermal probe, instruction booklet, and the clamp meter (see photo). I tested voltage readings AC and DC. They were similar to the readings on my older meter. Not sure how either would compare to an expensive meter. The thermal probe was with in + or - 5 degrees, which I believe is the accuracy stated in the manual. The manual was helpful when trying the different features. I was curious what the voltage range is for the NCV (Non-contact voltage detection) as I did not find that in the manual, on the Amazon description page, or even on their website. When in this mode, make sure the bump on the very top of the right clamp arm is pointing at what you are testing. That is where the sensor is and may not work if not pointed correctly. I like how the background of the LCD panel lights up orange if a certain high voltage is detected. This also works when testing for amperage. I tested AC amperage using the clamp and it was quite accurate except when nearing 0.1 amps which I found is lowest it can detect. That's about the amperage of a 12 watt light bulb. Be nice if it could detect amperage lower than that. Would like to have seen a red color designation for the red wire input port like my old meter. (See Photo) But I guess most people buying meters know the red goes on the right port and the black on the left one. I would recommend this for most home owners unless you need extreme accuracy. For the price this is a nice unit.
