  • Happy Chickens
Maine weather worrier here. Tomorrow night we are supposed to have record lows and I was worrying about my elderly 9yo chicken ladies. We have always let them be all natural, but a predicted -20 below with a windchill of -40+ below, well I felt I needed to help them. After reading the reviews, I see people either loved these or hated them. I just installed them a couple hours ago in preparation for tomorrow night's he** freezing over. I used the recommendation of another person about zip tying them on the existing perch. I also laid it on its side so they have more width to grab on to. Both of these things addresses 2 out of the 3 issues people had. The ladies jumped up on the bar the second I attached it to the perch (it was already past bedtime for them so no coercion was needed). I went back out in an hour and the bar was nice and warm. They were snuggled up on it and when I asked them if they liked it, well, I got the equivalent of a chicken purring. Happy chicken tender here so far. Now to wait and see how the next 48 hours goes as the arctic blast arrives tomorrow. It's only currently 25 degrees (the directions say it will shut off above 35). So far so good. Update: We got the temperatures predicted. Went out and checked on them a few times and all were well. One last adjustment I would recommend, if you attach it on the side, put a shim under the thin end so it will sit level. One had a harder time balancing and had to move her back onto the bar. Wish it had a more grippy surface like it rubberized surface so it wouldn't be as slippery. Overall, it provided the warmth we were looking for. ... show more

  • It is a nice item if you have smart hens
They get gently warm for the chickens but they don’t seem to be smart enough to us it. They are used to their old perches. It doesn’t get warm unless it gets below freezing . I also keep warmer for the water and a heat lamp in the coop.

  • Not consistent
I got this for my elderly hens some time ago, I am late to sending a review but the information says it's supposed to turn on any time the temperatures get below 30. But this thing never kicks on when it should. I eventually had to unplug it because it wasn't doing my chickens any good, and had to set it in the sun where at least it could get some heat collecting from the sun when they were out and about. Otherwise, only turns on randomly no matter the temperature or doesn't turn on at all. Has become a yard decoration the chickens don't care to use. ... show more

  • ZIP TIED THEM RIGHT TO THE CHICKERS ROOST BAR
When these work they are great. Have had to return a few. And the price is ridiculous. But I would recommend them to those who have chickens & live in a cold climate. I zip tie them to the roost bars once cold weather sets in. Live in the northeast & this helps the chicks out. My hens LOVE these. Its warmth not heat. They wrap their feet right around the heated bars & lay their chests right over them. It also keeps their feet dry. My coup is wide open almost every day year round. Full screen doors at both ends. But during the winter nights when it gets down into single/subzero temperatures I close up the coop & these are perfect. TIP: sometimes just plugging/unplugging a few times will get them to turn on. My chicks are very hardy & work hard enough, this helps them get through the coldest months. I want them to be comfortable not work unnecessarily harder. You are what you eat. ... show more

  • Nice warmth for Chickens
So far so good, to provide some heat to your chickens over the winter months. Did not use the Stands just zip tied it to the roosting bar. Turns on automatically after temp drops below 32F. Says bar gets to 99F internally I read about 80F. So guess on the really cold days the Hens with have warm feets. ... show more

  • Keeps your Chickens Warm
I am new to raising chickens and was reading online about how to keep them warm in very cold weather. In that article it mentioned having a heated perch which I did not know existed. I purchased this heated perch and I am extremely happy; and so are my chickens. I noticed the first night that my chickens were not huddled next to each other as they were previously on my homemade bamboo perch. More research indicated this meant that the chickens were comfortable; otherwise they will huddle next to each other to keep themselvs warm. Additionally this perch turns itself off at 35 deg so it does not consume electricity when it's a bit warmer. Highly recommend this perch! ... show more

  • Great idea... in theory.
Raising chickens in the midwest in the middle of a polar vortex can be disheartening. Yes, chickens are resilient, but with some of mine taking longer to finish the molting process than others, I felt bad, so I ordered 3 of these to put in their little nook under their coop. Those bird brains never touched them for more than 2 seconds to walk over them -_- I mean, the bars worked and did get warm to the touch, but I think the orientation of the bar is not right. The bars are oval shape and it's oriented vertically. They should definitely be horizontal. The more their feet can lay flat when they perch/sleep, the better. That allows their toes to be tucked in their feathers amd stay warm. For example, the roosting bars inside their coop are 2x4s with the 3.5" side facing up. Regardless, I wouldn't waste your money unless you want to rig up some kind of bracket to keep them in place horizontally. More of a headache than not. ... show more

  • Warm, happy hens
I live in the north suburbs of Chicago in a climate that produces severe inclement weather conditions during the winter. We often see consecutive subzero freezing temperatures which would make most egg laying hens go into hibernation and stop producing during winter months. My hens seem extremely happy with this roost in their coop and the egg production hasn’t subsided even during the coldest days. It is completely safe to keep in a box with pine shavings. It has an internal thermostat which kicks on when the air temperature reaches the freezing point. It is very easy to clean and wipe down. Highly recommend if you live in an area with poor climate during the winter months. ... show more
