  • It is not perfect but it would cost a lot more money to ...
I have been doing multi media transfer for 20 years. I rarely do work with slides so I decided to get something a bit more up to date than the system that I was using. I have to say I was surprised at how well this unit scanned in the slides. It is not perfect but it would cost a lot more money to achieve near perfect results. Bottom line is if the slide looks good than the scanned image will look good. If you have have cloudy day pics there is a tendency to have a bit of blue dominating the pic. I have found this to be the case when I do 8mm transfers also. So if you are looking for a cheap method to transfer slides this is it. The unit does have some color editing abilities but I would prefer to do this in something like Photoshop especially if you have a lot of photos that you want to touch up. I just did a 400 slide project and the vast majority of the scans were quite good and usable without editing. There is one negative that sticks out about this unit no pun intended. The positioning of the power cable is terrible.!!! They have put it right in the area where your hands will be working with the unit. The cable needs to be mounted somewhere at the base of the unit and possibly recessed a bit. Other than that I would definitely recommend this unit for slide transfer. I did not use it at all for picture transfer so I have no opinion on that. I do hope that they fix the USB cable positioning. ... show more

Not the best thing I have purchased but will work for my purposes. Is stand-alone "camera in a box" and came with an SD card so you can do a bunch of pictures before you download to a computer (either by reading the SD card or by plugging in the device, which then acts like a thumbdrive.) The device also has a small internal memory which can maybe hold about 20 or so pix -- note that this memory is "hidden" if an SD card is inserted. Overall comment -- the device "crops" your pictures assuming a 1/4" border and slides/negs assuming typical slide-mount. Also while the device can do some color/brightness adjustment your software on your computer may be better and easier -- I just adjusted enough to get it most of the way and make sure all colors were there, then used the computer to finish. For slides -- holder is a bit cumbersome but works as long as you don't try to "back it up". Seems to do a good job, can do some minor color or exposure correction using the tiny screen (screen's main use is to center your picture). Will magnify all flaws, scratches, and dirt on the slides so prep them well. Not sure higher resolution mode will buy you much. For negatives -- seems to do a reasonable job of "inverting", but you might need to do some adjustment. Same caveat re scratches and dirt. Also note that old negatives may have shifted in color (like old fotos) For photos -- here found a design issue. Some light reflects off the picture being photographed and "illuminates" the internals of the machine, which then might affect your image. Most pictures (especially pictures with lots of color and busy background, like crowds, etc) come through fine, but on pictures with lots of dark AND some light you will see either a "loss of contrast" (darks not as dark) with matte finish photos or actual circular shadows (reflections of camera lens and surrounding structure) on glossy prints. In some cases this can be "tuned out" by playing with the exposure settings -- darken the photo and the reflection will be reduced on glossies and virtually disappear on mattes. But a few pictures might be challenging. Again an issue with only some photos and glossy finished with very dark areas are most likely to see this. (At some point I might get ambitious enough to open this thing very carefully and see if I can add some black flocking to reduce this effect, but right now am living with it.) Otherwise does a decent job and was able to save some old fotos. And it is easier to use than a scanner, especially with smaller prints Off-size slides/negs -- will at some point try to build a Carrier: for some half-frame and 110's I have -- should not be too difficult to do. Also have a few 126's; will try to deal with those but here will have to give up some edge I think as device designed for 35mm slides/negs. Off-size fotos and borderless fotos. -- for 5x7 it will crop. For 4x6 or 3x5 try setting the device for the next size up (use 5x7 setting for 4x6 in the 4x6 frame) -- you will get some edges that you will have to crop off with other software but at least you will get 98% of teh pix. For fotos other than that size -- often these can be carefully inserted in a carrier along one side and as long as you are gentle and there is no foto curl you can probably slip these in and out without them falling out. If in doubt try sticking a little tape on the loose corner to hold the pix in place. Oh, and suggest you cut some 3x5/4x6/5x7 rectangles of flat black paper or poster as the picture holders have a glossy back (note comment about lens reflection above). Have had good success with these tricks (have many off-size fotos), just be slow and patient. Note that some processors cut prints a smidge wide -- here the processor is at fault, not the device. If the picture is hard to put in either trim it or consider using the next-size-up frame and treating it like an off-size. I intend to keep the device and use it. Will write back if I succeed in opening it up and improving the reflection issue, but that may be several months from now. ... show more

  • Ion, photo slide and film scanner. VERY IMPRESSED.
I'm Simply wowed by this, but I think Ion need to update the specs, even on the box it states 5.1mp, but they don't tell you that it is also capable of scanning to 10mp. (it does in the manual though) which is very nice, in these days of PDF's its very nice to get a paper manual to read..... Its easy to use, it comes with a 2gb Sd card in the box, it has 3 photographic plates, and slide and negative attachments. scanning is very simple, just put it in capture mode, press scan and then enter to save, you can even change exposure value in half stop values from +2 to -2. ONE THING, I would sugest when scanning photos putting a thick piece of card behind the photo as the scanner has a very bright lamp Did I say I love this scannner? oh no I didn't I said I was wowed, but I never mentione love... hey I guess I have now.... very nice piece of kit, which should help me keep some memories alive. (and get rid of all my old films) Another thing is even in 10mp scanning mode the scanner only produces scanned images at 1.5mb they should be about 3x larger than that... (my pentax dslr, produces 10mp images that are around 5mb in size) so I'm guessing the unit has a very high compression rate, and some photos will need cleaning up with photoshop or another software program, this in no way (the needing to clean up) detracts from the Units value.... as I believe most people will want to clean their images before they show them. thank you Ion, I like your stuff... ... show more

  • Very Pleased
Works for what I need. I take a lot of 35mm photos. I get the negatives developed and do not print every picture - no need and a waste, really. It is cost prohibitive to have my photo lab scan my negatives and put them on a disk. So I needed something that would quickly and easily turn my negatives into digital copies - this works very well. I've read reviews where people weren't satisfied with the scans of their old, printed photographs. I have yet to use that function, but I would suggest those who want to digitize prints invest in a flatbed scanner. Also, if you scan negatives or photos on anything, be aware that dust and scratches not visible to the naked eye will appear on the images. This is not a result of faulty equipment. You'll need to adjust the levels and clean up your images in PhotoShop (or free online programs, such as SumoPaint or PXLR). So far, I am pleased with my purchase. I hope to get many years use out of it. ... show more
