Description

Inside the Metal Detector is the definitive book on metal detector technology and design. But it is not just a book for those wanting to understand detector design, it also offers valuable operational insight to the detectorist who wants to know more about how targets respond and how detectors behave. After a high-level overview of detector types, the basics of magnetics and induction are explained, including simple experiments. The physics of magnetic and eddy target responses are covered as are the reasons for commonly encountered complex responses in field situations. Coil type, performance comparisons, and construction techniques are also explained. The metal detector topologies covered include:Energy TheftBFOOff-ResonancePLLTR and TR-DiscriminationVLF ground balance and motion filteringVLF-DiscriminationPulse Induction including ground balance methodsMultifrequency techniquesAdvanced PI techniquesHybrid methodsDigital techniquesMost topics include working example designs. Finally, there is an extensive list of resources including books, magazine articles, and patents. ITMD-3 represents a significant re-write from ITMD-2 with little recycled material and all-new example designs, and with over 250% more material. Read more

  • Thanks to the author for putting together this significant work
I was very excited to see there was an ITMD 3 (3.04) and I ordered it right away. I've had it only a few days now and I am amazed at the work that must have gone into it. Thank you. I've had ITMD 2 since 2015, and it in itself is amazing. I currently have a Whites Eagle II and a Minelab Equinox (besides pinpointers). Seeing that details of these specific detectors were covered in ITMD 3 guaranteed that I would purchase it. So far I have scanned through ITMD 3 and then started detailed reading with the chapter on ADC (Chapter 18 ) There is an incredible amount of insight/information regarding ADC techniques that broadly applies to other electronics well beyond metal detectors. In fact ITMD 2 and ITMD 3 are my favorite books on electronics period (and I have a lot of them), I am also looking forward to reading the chapter on magnetic fields in detail. This is something I have always had a hard time conceptualizing. Thanks again for ITMD 3 (and ITMD 2) ... show more

  • Review - Metal detector book
Very good, explains a lot + physics of metal detectors. Good to understand electromagnetics before you start to read that book.

  • A treasure trove of technical information on metal detectors
Very nice electronics engineering book detailing various metal detectors and in-depth analysis of how they operate. This is decade's worth of knowledge gained by the author and conveyed through this book. Worth every penny.
