I have gone through 3+ plastic drip coffee machines and none ever made a satisfactorily hot cup, although I have had hot coffee made in these type or machines at other's houses. I make one 18oz cup of coffee a day, knowing this is an espresso/cappuccino machine I got it looking for an acceptably hot cup of coffee. It will make a big cup when the button is pressed multiple times, it takes a little bit of time but the results are well worth it. This is a snazzy looking machine, it is easy to use and saves counter space. There was only a little confusion in that after brewing you are instructed to clear out the water dispensing nozzle by running water thru, water only dripped out after running the steam nozzle first, which did not seem to be in the instructions. After using the steam nozzle the second time after the initial set up the machine cleared the water dispensing nozzle correctly every time. Another big plus is that is it easier to clean than a common drip coffee maker and no paper filters needed. ... show more

I didn't really have high expectations for this machine, but it proved me wrong. It's heavy, much sturdier than I expected and seems well-made. The fact that it's slimmer than your standard machine is a plus. Setting up and using is quick and easy. Even though the instruction manual is obviously a translation into English, it's simple to read and understand. It produces a nice, strong espresso with a rich, smooth crema. The steam wand swings out far enough that you can get a good froth in a large pitcher. The only negatives are the tamper is flimsy and the portafilter handle doesn't feel very substantial.     • Great starter espresso machine
This ILAVIE Espresso Machine is a great starter machine in my view! I’m a coffee aficionado, but have always leaned toward the French Press method (and Aeropress), not trying my hand at espresso until now with this machine. It’s very straight forward and easy to use…plug and play, really. Press the power button on the top of the machine (this button is shared with the single shot selection, there’s a separate button next to it for a double shot selection, and a 3rd button for the steam wand) and the single/double shot buttons flash white light until the machine is ready to brew, turning to a solid white light. From there, tap the button for the desired shot, single or double, and the espresso starts to brew. I found that the machine heats very quickly, usually within 30-45 seconds and it’s ready to go! The resulting espresso looks great with a nice layer of crema on top, and the color/hue isn’t too yellow (a sign of bitterness) – I suppose this also would depend upon the quality and type of coffee beans being used, in my case, we use a high quality organic & biodynamic brand of coffee beans, and a Burr grinder. We’ve been enjoying iced mochas (even though it’s winter, lol, we love them all year round), and lattes (we aren’t huge fans of foam, so cappuccinos aren’t our jam). Speaking of lattes, it definitely takes a good amount of practice using the milk steaming wand to get the hang of it – I’ve watched several videos and practiced quite a bit to develop some kind of beginner’s technique (as an experienced home cook that understands textures, temperatures, preparation, etc. very well to adapt to this milk steaming process rather easily). One thing I’ve noted, is that the steam wand on this machine is just OK – when the dial is turned up to full intensity, even before reaching that point, the machine will vibrate or pulse deeply because of the pressure it’s trying to handle. As a result, I’ve experienced the steam emitting from the wand for short spurts of time and not continuously – and I need it to work longer because of using raw-organic milk that has higher protein content, takes longer to achieve the somewhat silky texture desired for a latte (or cappuccino). So, to this point, latte ‘art’ has been out of the question and that’s due to a combination of the raw milk AND lackluster function of the machine’s steam wand. One other slight drawback for this machine is its plastic water reservoir – would be much better if it were glass, or stainless steel. But to get around this, I don’t store water in it, I just fill it with the necessary amount of water every time I’m using it; the water isn’t heating up inside the plastic reservoir, so this workaround ‘works’ for me mentally in trying to avoid any chemicals leeching into the water. Another note to make is regarding the machine’s instruction manual, it’s not the best…it misdirects you to long-press the power button to turn ON the machine, when the opposite is true, you long-press the power button to turn the machine OFF. And it mentions nothing about how to change out the espresso shot cups that are used to place the ground coffee in for a single or double shot – I had to figure that out on my own, there’s a tiny indentation in each cup that lines up with another tiny indentation on the holder, if they aren’t lined up, the cups will NEVER come out, and it’s important that they come out so that you’re able to place either the single shot or double shot cup in the holder based on the espresso yield you want. That needs to be mentioned in the instructions. Nonetheless, overall, I’m digging this espresso machine as my first such machine…has made me wonder why I waited so long to try my hand at espresso machines! The cleanup is so quick and easy, rinsing the few pieces and drying them off. I’ll continue using this machine until I decide to invest in something superior, but using this machine, I at least know that I now definitely intend to make that investment and upgrade to a highly rated machine sooner than later…we’re loving the coffee drinks we’re making that much! ... show more

    • Makes espresso, steam needs work.
Overall, this does a good job at making espresso. It's a small basic unit, so I'm not looking for anything spectacular. This does the job. A huge side benefit of this is that it's quite small and doesn't require a lot of space. It's designed well, and benefits from a mostly metal construction. The little red flag that pops up (via a float) from the overflow is a really nice touch, as I have a bad habit of letting that go unnoticed for long periods of time. The steamer works, but takes longer than I would like to get going and doesn't provide a lot of pressure/heat. For basic usage without breaking the bank (or taking over your entire counter), this is a pretty good option. ... show more
