  • Good Value for the Price
Considering I paid with gift rewards and credits, I basically got it for free and it was a good choice. The only problem was while assembling the units, and that was deciding if the spacers under the black flat bar were needed or not. In my case, they were not, but I had to go through trial and error to find that out. Once assembled and secured to the roof rack, they worked great. I like the positioning options of the center half-hoop and that they can be positioned in a flat state when not in use, thus being able to park in the garage without damaging the carrier or the garage. ... show more

  • Delivers as promised
The Ikuram carrier is an excellent alternative to the more common J-carriers. The design allows for compact and secure carrying, on winding roads or at highway speeds. Although I use it for carrying a pair of kayaks, the center bar folds down to carry a larger canoe or similar craft. The installation was straightforward, although the part that connects to the rack is designed for square bars it still connected securely to my oval shaped bars. The connection point has teeth, so to prevent them from digging in to the bar and damaging the bar finish (one-way ticket to rusting bars), I inserted a flexible rubber sheet. On my vehicles rack, there is plenty of space for the securing bolts without risk of contacting the top of the vehicle. I can see how a lower profile rack design would require bolt shortening. The straps that came with the kit are sufficient to do the job, but I can see how some might prefer a different design. It just takes some forethought on placement and some knot tying skills. I tie off one kayak to the carrier, and then loop the straps for the second kayak around the other kayak and the carrier. The anti-skid plates seem to work as promised as the kayak positions have not changed in transit regardless of distance and speed. I would recommend that you check the carrier bolts regularly for tightness as they do loosen slightly with use. The one thing I wish this carrier had was a method of locking to the rack, but I haven't seen that feature on any other carrier. ... show more

  • Sturdy and dependable for a good price
These carriers are fairly easy to install; it’s just a tedious process that takes some time. So far I’ve loved this product for taking my kayaks out. I have a 10’ and a 12’, and I carry them on my Subaru Crosstrek. Carrying two is doable, but it does seem like that’s probably the maximum capacity, in that it can be a tight fit. I’d also highly suggest not using the straps that come with the product; just plan on investing in some higher quality ratchet straps. These will work in a pinch, but they’re on the flimsy side, and they will slip. I’d also suggest checking the tightness of the bolts every time you use the carriers, because it can loosen up over time. ... show more

  • The bolts maybe too long and damage the roof!
Well, after reading several reviews, I was already aware that the instructions could be terrible. They were! But there are many YouTube videos that explain assembly. Its really very easy. While watching the video, however, I notice that the bolts looked a little long (they’re 3”) and wondered about paint / body damage to the roof. I have a Toyota 4 Runner and after assembly many of the bolts were very close or actually rubbing on the roof top that could damage the paint and/or body. I cut off about ½” on about 7 or 8 bolts, and problem solved! If you have a clamp and hacksaw, its easy enough. It is, however, an extra step that requires more work. Once the rack is assembled, keep an eye on the bolts to make sure they’re not rubbing and/or scratching the roof top. If it wasn’t for the bolts, I would have given it all five stars. Other than that, I loaded up the rack with two Kayaks and drove about 17 miles home. Today is Wednesday, on Monday I’m loading it up again and driving about 140 miles on state and county roads from Phoenix AZ to the tiny town of Heber AZ in the Arizona rim country. I’ll let ya know how the racks do. Update: loaded with two kayaks, I drove the 140 miles from Phoenix AZ to Heber AZ. Stopped a couple of time to check everything and no problems were detected. The rack worked great! ... show more
