  • Doggie door was perfect!
Works great for our 17 lb doggie door. Easy install!

  • Did it - but harder than expected
I found installing the pet door a great deal more difficult than expected. I did succeed in the end but it wasn't as easy as I anticipated. Beware -- the first step in the enclosed instructions is to remove the screen mesh from the door frame. Yeah right! Taking apart my screen door to access the mesh was a non-starter. The difficulty is that installing the pet door requires all work to be done on an hard surface (I used my concrete garage floor) when hammering the two sides (the inside and outside panels of the pet door) together. However, if the screen mesh is still inside of a door frame, that means the frame is suspending the mesh above the hard surface instead of allowing it direct contact -- and that made joining the two sides of the pet door impossible. I solved the problem by putting a metal box underneath to serve as a sort of platform to support the mesh. It worked but was a pain in the rear. ... show more

  • Haven't used yet
Gave 3 stars ( midway) as I haven't used yet. My window screen got broken & hasn't been replaced yet. Looks like it will work ok ( guessing).

  • Works great
I have a large metal tough screened window and was leery about fitting this into my screen as there were so many complaints.. ..so much so I put off the project 3 weeks. I tried the directions and they did not work. So I read the comments of other reviewers and mix and matched several bits of their advice. 1. First I put the two frames together with the swinging window inside just to see if the 2 sides fit properly. I did not connect all the inserts - just enough to know when there was a screen between them it should fit also. 2. Get a rubber mallet. Thank you to whoever suggested this. 3. Put the screen flat on floor. My metal screen is metal and old and tough. I put one side of the pet door under the screen in the position I wanted it to be in. Then I used a screwdriver to poke a small hole over the top of the areas where the "door" prongs stick up around the top of the frame and I poke a hole inside the round holes at the top of the screen door where the prongs of the 2nd part of the door fit. That idea was great because I could not get the two side together without doing that. I didn't have to poke holes in the screen at the bottom because once the top snapped together I used the rubber mallet to pound in the bottom half of the door half together. 4. I did cut the screen out before snapping the 2 sides together but I did not cut a very big hole. I waited until I had to 2 sides snapped together and then cut off the rest of the areas around the inside just enough so the door swung freely. 5. My cats were confused by the flap door so I wadded up a plastic grocery bag into a ball - wrapped it into a wad with clear tape and then taped the plastic round wad under one side of the swinging door so the door became propped open / cannot close and the door is instead sticking out toward the inside of the house. The cats can now just go in and out without pushing the door as the door is propped up by that wad of wrapped plastic. Right now I have 99.9% of the screen covering the window keeping bugs out....so I am not worried about a few bugs getting in through the propped up window. I can work on getting the cats used to the flap later. 5. I spray painted my screen dark brown so it cannot be seen against the black metal screen so it blends in better. BOTTOM LINE: My cats love it. My screen has one of those rubber rings around it holding it into the screen frame and it is simple enough to buy a screen cut to size and then pull the old screen out and put another screen in if I ever wanted to take out the cat flap door. ... show more

  • Cheap, but not the best for cats.
It’s cheap and pretty easy to install, but not the best for cats. I was hoping it would swing in and out easily, but it gets stuck when it’s closed. Not locked or anything, but you need a bit of force to push it open. For dogs this isn’t much of a problem, but for cats it’s harder for them to understand that you need to keep pushing for it to open. My cat has an enclosed litter box he needs to push through to get in, but the flap for the box doesn’t have any resistance like the screen door flap and he’s having allot of difficulty understanding he can get through if he pushes harder. He’ll probably eventually get it, but if I had known the door was like this, I’d probably have gone for another one. ... show more

  • Ideal Pet Door is a Great Product But Don't Expect Pets To Master Using it Right Away
The Ideal Screen Fit Pet Door is a great product, but it requires patience and ingenuity on the part of the pet-parent and involves a learning process on the part of the pet. Don't expect your pet to instantly take to it. So I have had the Ideal Products Pet Screen Door installed for a bit over a month now. I had the door installed by a handyman. Two magnets work in tandem to ensure that the door shuts tight after the pet passes through the door (one in the door, one in the frame), and when the door arrived, the one in the frame had fallen out (my only criticism). I made sure that the handyman was aware that he needed to orient the offending magnet correctly in order for the magnets to attract rather than repel one another so that the door closes properly. Getting the height of the door right is important. After eyeballing my cats, I had the handyman install the door one inch above the frame of the screen, and for my cats and my porch, that seems to be the perfect height. Once the door was installed, I followed the lead of another reviewer and rigged the door to stay open all of the time, and left it that way for about 10 days, or until the two cats were used to the pet door being there, and were using it freely to go in and out onto the porch. Then I closed the door, and when the cats wanted to go out, I would grasp their bodies and gently push them through the door, head first, so that they would understand they needed to use their heads to push the door open. One cat has a tendency to try to open the door using her paws, which aren't strong enough to move the door, and makes it appear as if she is trying to play patty-cake with the door! She is getting the hang of it slowly, although the fact that the door opens vertically rather than horizontally, like all of the other doors she is familiar with, seems to throw her off a bit, and she keeps trying to push through on the side. We are still in the learning process. Both cats still want me to open the door for them. I try to resist, but often give in. Once outside, the cats will often return through the door on their own, but sometimes, such as right at this very moment, my male cat will sit outside the door crying plaintively, and I will try to ignore him for as long as I can, so that he tries to come in on his own. While the cats are still in the learning process, I do love this pet door, and am so grateful to have it installed, as it gives the cats more freedom and frees me up as well--and best of all, the fruit flies that used to plague me are all gone! ... show more
