  • Almost Killed My Cichlid Tank
TL;DR Moral of the story, if you purchase these filters, go overboard washing them. Do not think a quick rinse will be sufficient. ---------- I have been in the hobby for almost 5 years and have experimented with lots of equipment. I have never had a product come so close to killing all my fish. The fish almost immediately started acting strangely, some shaking violently and eventually sinking to the bottom and became listless. I took the filter off as soon as I saw the strange behavior. After 30 min, I started emergency water changes and after another 20 minutes I transferred of all my fish to a second tank as they started turning on their sides. Luckily the transfer saved them, but this was almost a complete disaster. 5/14/2020 Update: After the near disaster, I went overboard washing these filters. After cleaning the tank and adding fresh carbon to the filters, I re-installed them, filled the tank and let it run for 24 hrs. I then put a lucky test subject back in the tank and let him swim around for another 24 hours. He lived so I put the rest of my fish back to the tank. It appears they are all healthy. Now that the filters are clean, they do a good job of catching a lot of gunk before it gets into my canister filers. I am pleased with that, however, I am giving this a final 2 star review because nothing going into a fish tank should be delivered this toxic. Moral of the story, if you purchase these filters, go overboard washing them. Do not think a quick rinse will be sufficient. ... show more

  • Use these on penguin 350
I bought these hoping to use as a prefilter on my penguin bio wheel 350s and i was correct. They work great! Update: these increase the filter maintenance interval 2 fold on my 350s. All you need to do in between is grab a zipper gallon size bag, and use it to scoop around this prefilter while the filter is running and push this prefilter off the intake and into the bag, scooping up some tank water as ypu pull the bag out of your aquarium about 1/3 full of tank water and niw also containing the prefilter. Holding the bag with one hand, place your other hand in it and swoosh/squeeze the prefilter in the bagged aquariumnwater until the water turns brown. Squeeze water out of prefilter and keep in hand while you dump brown water out of bag. Drop prefilter in now empty bag. Scoop another 1/3 full bag of aquarium water and then repeat cleaning procedure. Doing it twice should be good. Replace prefilter on pump inlet while filter is running. Perform 5his activity when you notice the prefilter start to concave from the inlet suction due to having a clogged prefilter. Big tip: never clean any filtration in any other solution other than your aquarium water or you will destroy beneficial bacteria colonies. ... show more

  • releases something that raises pH significantly, potentially dangerous
i ordered these without reading all of the reviews, but i saw a warning about problems after installing without thorough cleaning while i was waiting for them to arrive. There was definitely a noticeable plastic/petrochem smell coming from them fresh out of the packaging. i squeezed them out under 7.2pH water several times, and then i let them sit in a container of freshened 7.2pH water over night. temperature was maintained at 74deg F, and the ph meter was calibrated using the factory provided standards. as a control, testing distilled water gave a plausible reading of 6.75 pH. The next day i drained off the water from the soaking filters and tested the PH. the reading had increased from 7.2 to 8.1 just from having these sitting in the water for 12 hours. Since the same review that warned me mentioned that the guy cleaned them and then was able to use them, i decided to dump API carbon into the rinse/soak container with the filters and then i refilled with more 7.2pH water and let them sit for another 12 hours. Today the pH had increased only slightly to 7.4 when i tested the drained water. I am, TBH, not sure why my fellow customer decided to keep cleaning and using these after his fish all almost died. But, it does seem like cleaning them with carbon in the soak water is absorbing something that affects pH. I would like to hear more about what process successfully cleaned these in that other application. I stole the idea for dumping carbon on them from reading that carbon filtering of the endangered tank was used to remediate the problem. i still havent installed mine, going to see if i can get a 'doesnt affect ph anymore' result. even then, i feel like i dont trust the items despite their seductively perfect size/shape to install as a prefilter in my tank. i ended up purchasing foam from swiss tropicals website, which was pretty convenient, took paypal etc after reading it recommended on the 'fishlab' website. (i trust the fishlab blog but i will still verify ph stability with same tests). I may resort to purchasing the hikari or hydro pre-made filters also available here on amazon and recommended by same. I prefer the idea of being able to slip a cover of material over my filter intake and having extra biofiltration surface area available without needing to run an air line. That was why i purchased these in the first place, so i will probably cut the "safe" foam when it arrives, make my own pre-filters and never actually use these. its scary that they can raise pH a full point with whatever chemicals and they release into water even after a few minutes of squeezing and rinsing. I suppose the larger your tank, the more diluted the nasties will be, and some fish will be less sensitive than other so maybe thats why most people seem to have liked this item and why i should have read all of the reviews instead of just looking at the overall score and assuming they must be safe to buy. I am grateful to the fellow customer that shared the story about the tank crashing, otherwise i would have just rinsed a few times and maybe not noticed problems and woken up to tank full of dead fish. Edit. Still affecting ph after several carbon soaks. Probably shouldn't have expected much better at the price point. But, i also purchased some similar but smaller filters made for the flual edge aquarium here around the same time for ~$2 each and those are now no longer affecting PH. I went ahead and installed that on the intake and will probably cut some swiss tropical foam when it arrives to replace the Internal filter. ... show more
