  • Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Oh, absolutely! Reclaiming my weekends!
Size: 440iQ
Let me be upfront first: This review was submitted as a sweepstakes entry. That does not mean this is a dishonest review. And it will be a long one to lay out all the reasons why we, one year after purchase, still love our 440iQ. So, the reason we bought the 400iQ is that we were already happy 450EX owners. That mower came with the house we bought in 2019, and even though I never thought I wanted an automatic mower, I was sold on the idea after just 2 weeks of owning one. The only problem was, the 450EX was a mower - very similar to the 440iQ - that required a boundary wire. And at that moment, it was perfectly fine. But boundary wires are prone to breakage in the area where we live, and that happened a lot. When Husqvarna released the iQ series, the concept of a wireless setup sounded like a too-good-to-be-true thing, because while doing research for other similar products, the reviews were so-so. But I set one up for my in-laws a month earlier, and saw how well it performed. So we bought one a month later. First of all. The 440iQ is expensive. And Husqvarna is not promoting all kinds of gadgets and hyper-modern features. Because - it is a mower. It mows grass. And it is extremely good at it. We already knew that from our 450EX. Why we decided to stick with Husqvarna, even though it was the more expensive brand in the line-up was that experience. When you need to replace a part, you can buy them. They are so easy to repair, even if you have limited DIY skills. And that is in the case that something breaks. They are extremely durable. And they simply work. The app that comes with it is pretty user friendly. User friendly enough that I have no problems having my not-tech-savvy use it to manage their own mower. Even the setup is easy enough if you read the instructions, but most likely it is easier to have a more tech-savvy person do it. But it is a straight-forward setup. One thing where the 440iQ is underselling itself is the 2-acre moving capacity (a little less for an odd-shaped area). Because 2-acres is not the limit. It is an 2-acre limit per mowing area. We have 4, and each could potentially be up to 2 acres large. So if you have 4 acres or more, and considering the 2-acre limit, don't. You set up a schedule that tackles different areas at different days and times, and you will be able to break through that 2-acre limit easily. Speaking of areas and scheduling; each area has it's own settings, including length of the grass, mowing patterns and stay-out zones. The stay-out zones specifically are super useful and easy to add and remove. As we were replacing our decks, our new boards would be positioned in the front yard. We created a quick stay-out zone, and our mower carefully mows around it. The mower is durable. We have just added a new piece of lawn that used to be a rocky shrub-infested area. The mower handles it, even though there are some rocks still in the ground that it will mow against. With many years with the 450EX and now with the 440iQ I can tell you; you do not have to worry. The mower will complain, but will not even bat an eye to that problem. Sure, the blades will dull quicker - which are easy to replace which is done in minutes. And then I know where the rocks are and remove them. You don't have to stay with the Husqvarna blades for a good experience. You can replace them with cheap knock-offs that still perform really well. Once you get the hang of how easy it is to replace blades, it might save you some money each season. But, best of all. It just mows. It does it and doesn't complain. And I can use my time in my yard to seriously enjoy it. I don't have to buy gasoline to power my mower, I don't have to push or ride on one in the heat, I don't have to do that maintenance or hire people to do it. It just works. Period. So, coming back to the pricing. Yes, it is expensive, and you might feel weird about spending a lot of money on something that you actually don't actively use. But that is the great part of it. See it as buying yourself 2-4 hours of extra time each week to enjoy. Year after year. For me, it was worth every single penny. I hope your experience with it will be as good as ours. ... show more

This robotic lawn mower costs $5,500 but it will not work on my property without spending another $25,000 on serious programming. And the worst part: even after spending another $25k on programming, it is not guaranteed to work properly. My decision; Return to the Vendor !!! This type of product is a gimmick. • Husqvarna 440iq automower: serious technology that works
Size: 440iQ
As of this writing, I’ve owned and have been operating my Husqvarna 440iq Automower for a little over 6 weeks. Overall it has been doing a very good job. It’s been mowing different areas of our yard on alternate days, as programmed into the schedule and as recommended by Husqvarna. There have been a few minor glitches, most of which could be addressed with minor changes to the firmware; hopefully Husqvarna will address these issues in future versions of the code. I elected to do the installation myself, and saved about $1000 by doing so; this is what the local dealer in our area charges to do the installation. It took me the greater part of a day to do the installation, both because of the large number of waypoints required in our large (nearly 2 acre) lawn that has an odd shape and lots of obstacles, and because of a few technical issues that I ran into during the installation. Fortunately Husqvarna’s technical support is very good, and the rep was able to help me quickly resolve the problems that I ran into. The only downside here is that they are only available during business hours on weekdays, so if you’re trying to do an installation on a weekend and run into a problem you might have to wait until a weekday to resolve it. Whether or not to do the installation yourself should depend on your skillset. If you are a technically competent do-it-yourself sort of person, you should be able to handle it. Reliability has been very good, although not perfect. In the roughly 6 weeks we’ve been running this mower, there has been about one instance per week where it stopped because of a fault. About half of these instances have been legitimate: for example, the mower got stuck in a rut from a rotted tree stump. On several occasions, however, there has been an indicated fault (with the mower stopped because of the fault), and investigation revealed no problem. We reset the mower and told it to start mowing, and it went on its merry way. We’re not overly concerned about these occasional glitches though; this is very advanced technology and no technology is perfect. If I have manually reset it once a week I’ll gladly do so to avoid riding a conventional mower for several hours per week. Another way of looking at it: it’s had maybe 3 false faults in over 500 hours of operation; not bad. Be sure to take the 2-acre limit of the 440iq seriously. Husqvarna recommends mowing each area of your lawn every other day. Our lawn is divided into two roughly ¾ acre areas; each of these areas takes roughly 16-20 hours to mow. Which means the mower needs to start at midnight to ensure that that day’s area gets completely mowed. Fortunately, the mower is extremely quiet; if you have nearby neighbors, the need to mow in the middle of the night shouldn’t be a problem. The mower has a rain-guard feature that can be enabled to keep it from mowing during a rainstorm, which is nice. However, this leads to an issue that Husqvarna could easily resolve with a code update. If the mower doesn’t finish an area that is scheduled to be mowed on a given day, on the next scheduled day for that area, it doesn’t mow the entire area; it instead just finishes what it didn’t on the previously scheduled day. For example, if my front yard is scheduled to be mowed on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and it only completes 90% of the front yard on Tuesday, it will only do the remaining 10% on Thursday (instead of the entire front yard). This defeats the intended operating mode of mowing every area of your yard at least every other day. A better algorithm would ignore what it mowed on the previously scheduled day for that area and mow the entire area. As for why the mower might not complete a scheduled area on a day scheduled, this can occur for any reason that the mower is interrupted that day. Possibilities include the rain guard function previously mentioned, or if the mower encounters a fault that isn’t immediately corrected. Positional accuracy is extremely good. The mower uses GPS for guidance, supplemented by either a new system that uses cell towers or an included local GPS transmitter that you mount at a high point on your property. I couldn’t get the cell tower based system to work, so I used the included transmitter, which works very well. Claimed accuracy is within a centimeter, and I believe that is probably true. The mower consistently mows the entire yard, leaving regular lawn stripes while doing so. The stripes are much narrower than typical lawn stripes mowed with a conventional mower because the cutting mechanism is only about 9” wide (which is obviously much narrower than the blade on a conventional mower). One of the reasons that it is recommended that you program the mower to mow each area of your lawn at least every other day is that these mowers are intended to only clip off the top of the blades of grass (rather than the much greater portion of the blades cut when mowing once a week with a conventional mower). There are two advantages to this approach: the resulting grass is much healthier, and there are no grass clippings to rake up. The small snippets cut from the grass blades are small enough to fall to the bottom of your lawn, helping to fertilize it, and significantly, further reducing the workload. While saving money wasn’t the primary reason we bought the automower, I decided to do a test to see what it was costing to operate. A power meter indicated that the mower is only using about 0.65 kWh of electricity per day, or about 4.55 kWh per week. We’re paying about 18 cents per kWh in Wisconsin, so the calculated cost is about $.82 per week. I was previously cutting the lawn with a zero turn mower, using about 2 gallons of gas to do so (and about 2 hours of my time!). Given that gas is now about $4.50 per gallon in our area, this is about $9 per week. The automower is clearly a lot less expensive to operate (a better than 10:1 reduction in operating cost)! I was also interested in the effect on carbon emissions. Electricity in Wisconsin has a net carbon footprint of about 462 grams of CO2 per kWh. Gasoline produces about 8650 grams of CO2 per gallon. Thus our weekly CO2 lawn cutting emissions went from about 8650*2=17,300 grams to about 4.55*462=2102 grams, or about a 8.23:1 reduction. The mower also includes some very good security features. If it encounters a fault (and stops operating) it requires a PIN code to resume operating. Better still, it has “virtual fence” that you set up, centered on a point in your lawn. If the mower is taken outside of that area, it will not operate. Husqvarna is able to see the location of the mower, rendering theft pointless. I’m guessing that the user could also see the location of the mower if it were stolen (you can see the location of the mower within your lawn on the app), but I haven’t taken the mower outside of my lawn to see if this is the case. There’s the obvious benefit of not having to worry about finding time to mow the lawn every week. There’s an additional psychological benefit of waking up in the middle of the night and realizing your lawn is being mowed without any effort on your part! There’s also the fun of having guests & neighbors notice the mower operating and asking questions about it. My overall conclusion: the Husqvarna 440iq automower is well worth the money. The few issues we’ve encountered are minor and likely to be corrected with future firmware updates. ... show more

  • Butch is great Butch is great
Size: 440iQ
Butch is the hardest working member of the family. He chugs away day and night putting some narrow, but pretty stripes on the lawn. We all get a kick out of watching him work. Setup was fairly easy. Took about 3 hours total to unbox and get rolling. Programming wasn’t too bad either…. Fairly straightforward through the app. We’ve got Butch cutting about 1.25 acres of lawn 3x per week. Problems: 1) mower came with a warped cutting disc (probably due to packaging??). I paid $20 thru Husky and replaced myself. 2) changing points along the cutting path is a little bit of a pain, app is a bit finicky. Small problems aside, I am so far satisfied with my purchase. Butch has about 4 months of cutting under his belt with minimal issues. Overall, I would recommend others to get their own ‘Butch’. He’s a good little dude! I love the concept, the idea of setting up a perimeter with GPS fencing is excellent. The epos locked into the GPS signals quickly and I think had probably a reliable connection. The problem was the charging base. It's fairly flimsy plastic and I could never get it to set up a docking Point despite living on top of a hill with wonderful GPS reception and trying several different sites. I purchased this Item it worked ok for 5 days, I called Tech Support, they told me it had to go to a repair shop, they told me 3-4 weeks to get it repaired, I then returned it and bought a second one from Amazon, I set up the same way except this unit would not take a Firmware update, after many calls and over 8 hours of Tech support the outcome was to take it to a repair shop. i ended up returning the second unit, it seems like a good unit, except I do not think they have what it takes on a support end to take care of there product, I have since purchased the Segway unit, it has worked perfect and is not in search of a Cloud that doesn't exist. ... show more

  • Good mower, could be a GREAT mower with software tweaks. Good mower, could be a GREAT mower with software tweaks.
Size: 440iQ
Update May 2026: been able to get more reliable operations by moving zones further away from ditches and obstacles and avoiding cloudy days, went over a month without major error. I bought this so my frequent travels don't get interrupted by mowing. I have about a 1 acre yard, with various obstacles, including a treeline on one side, a semi-busy street up front, a yard that is sloped / flat in some areas, with trees and landscaping throughout. I am listing the good and bad, I still give this four stars with hopes that the company will consider improvements for future software. Overall I'd still buy this, but curious to know if there are options that need less setup. Pros: GPS works well and is accurate usually to within about a foot. Handles trees quite well for the GPS. Cuts straight lines. Does make life easier. Straightforward to setup. Super quiet. Great battery. Keeps 99.9% of the yard looking fantastic (still needs edging). Cons: There are two types of errors that I will call minor and major. Minor errors e.g. slip, blade stoppage, can somewhat be reset / ignored via the app. Major ones e.g. picked up, upside down must be reset in person from the mower. Either way the mower stops where it's at until you reset it via whatever means you're able to. This gives me cause for concern living near a street with occasional opportunists and it stops near the road. The anti-theft causes more headaches than it's worth as it's errored once thinking it was picked up when it had just hit a bump (and can't be reset via the app)... so I just turned it off. Anything outside of grass dulls your blade, so yards with pinecones, sticks, balls, etc. need not bother with this device. Suggestions: 1. There should be an option to add a circle stay-out-zone with width option on the map so I don't have to map out a weird polygon around a tree. 2. The device should go home automatically when I haven't responded to an error in a timely manner. 3. Tweaking a zone during operation shouldn't restart the mow operation at 0%. 4. Anti-theft should self-reset if the mower is able to just drive home and still in the perimeter. 5. Error force override from app should be possible, I can see it on my security camera and can just tell it to go home. This review was submitted as a sweepstakes entry. ... show more
