  • Incredible functionality and performance...when it works. ***UPDATED AGAIN***
***Update 03/05/2020 Just a quick update to say that I have had zero problems from this printer since my November '17 update. I show up on weekends and find it asleep. Go to print something and it wakes quickly and spits out pages quickly and quietly. One caveat is that I am almost always printing wirelessly from my Win10 laptop - don't print very often from my iPhone because of a lack of configuration options compared with laptop printing. Raising my rating from 3 to 4 stars. ***Update 11/14/2017 Printing remains snappy and reliable. Quality of the prints is good. I love the convenience of being to print right from my phone. I'm able to print lots of pages quickly with no issues - pretty happy with the quality and speed. Functionality-wise, one feature I feel is missing is the ability to manipulate printing of files on USB drives. When you plug a drive in, you can only print the different files. File type support is good, but if you have a PDF, for example, you can't choose to print only a selection of pages - you have to print the whole file. I suspect this is because they would have to have advanced support for multiple file types, and keep that support up-to-date. This is usually not an issue. But we had essentially a book in one PDF and only wanted to print a few pages, and that was not possible from the USB interface. Regarding the ink, I confirmed that the cartridges that came with the printer are "setup" cartridges (they have "Setup" printed on the end). I have now replaced the three colors as they have all run out. Black is still holding on. Searching the details on the HP site, I did find where they indicate that the printer ships with the setup cartridges. They claim the black should be good for ~3000 pages and CMY for ~1500 pages, which appears to be in-line with the results I observed. So hopefully others can benefit from my oversight / insufficient research. This printer will cost $500, then you'll have to spend another $500 in ink after a few months (assuming you get the "x" cartridges). ***Update 8/13/2017 I'm still pleased with the overall performance and functionality. We use this at a church and only print on the weekends. It wakes right up and starts printing with no issues. Been reliable that way. My big complaint is that we have printed maybe (MAYBE) 1000 sheets total and the ink cartridges are already showing as almost gone. I wonder if HP puts "starter" cartridges in since other users say they get 10,000 prints per cartridge. Yes, we are printing full page graphics, so maybe that's just the way it is. I am buying the "X" high yield replacement cartridges and will see if they yield better results. I expected to have to buy ink about once every 2 years. Instead I'm having to buy ink after just 2 months. Dropping another star, though I really would rate it at 3.4 stars. If I have to buy $500 worth of ink every 2-3 months, then this is a bust. *** Update 6/20/2017 after receiving replacement... I received the replacement printer and it is an improvement on the original. There are no dog-eared pages, and in fact no paper feed issues at all. I did end up having the same issue with Blue Screens on this second unit, but I am now convinced that was due to the size / complexity of the pdf I was trying to print from my phone, which was generated directly from InDesign. That was the only file that caused this issue, and only from my iPhone. There a lot of things you can do with this printer. After spending some time with it, I do have 3 specific comments. 1) Colors are definitely muted and not very accurate on "regular" paper. I've seen this mentioned in other reviews too. It's not bad, and not even a problem for me, since I'm mostly just printing handouts and Sunday School materials. 2) Speeds are good - even very good - but they are not consistent. Sometimes pages come flying out, other times there are delays between some sheets. Again, overall this still yields a pretty fast printer / copier. But the published max speeds are truly max possible in the universe, if the stars align. 3) My biggest disappointment is a relatively small thing - when printing from a USB flash drive file, you apparently can't choose which pages to print, you have to print the whole file. This is a problem for me as I have a summer's long file of material that I just want to print off one week's worth (a few pages) at a time. This is not possible as far as I can tell. Hopefully this can (will?!) be fixed in a future firmware update, but why is this function not included? Overall, so far, I'd probably buy this unit again. Will report back if anything changes. *** Original review below... This is the ideal AiO printer for a small business or organization. It does so much and is fairly intuitive. Problem is, I've had nothing but problems since I installed it. The first issue that showed up was during the automated test prints during initial setup. One of the pages came out dog-eared and crooked. After setup, almost every print job had at least one or two dog-eared pages. I checked for obstructions, checked the paper / paper tray. Nothing worked. The second, and even more critical issue is that I've gotten about 10 - 15 blue screens on this within the first day of real use. Every time I try to print from my phone, the print job starts on my phone, then there's a blue screen with power button logo on the printer that just says "B8B6695E." Then I have to power cycle the printer to recover it. I checked for a firmware update, but the printer has the latest. I'm hoping I just got a lemon this time because the potential of this machine is truly phenomenal. I have initiated a return for the first unit and ordered another one. Will update this review after I've had the chance to test the second one. ... show more

  • Printer doesn’t work
I bought this printer awhile back & it worked great then it all of a sudden wouldn’t print on the left side. We’ve tried doing several different things & calling customer service. Super sad!

  • Has performed well during last 2 years.
I purchased this MFP 477dw in June 2020, but wanted to wait a while before reviewing it. Because I use it for home office, the volume of printing is low. Thereby, waiting at least 2 years and there has not been any issues. This model has the features that I needed (color, print speed, copy, fax, scan, etc.). The one thing that would make it better would be a Laserjet version (highlighting ink printing can smug). ... show more

  • Does not fulfill promises to compete with Laser Printers
I have had this printer for about one year now. It works good, is very fast and easy to use. The drawbacks are: - you need special ink lock paper for the colors to be fully vivid. All of the colors are muted on non ink lock paper. This paper tends to be more expensive. - It does not getting the number of estimates pages printed per ink cartridge if your print jobs have any graphics. I would say our printer prints a moderate level of print jobs with graphics and gets about 86% of the estimated number of pages out of an ink cartridge. This pushes the the cost per page for ink from about $.04 to $.05. Still cheap, just more expensive then estimated then about $.02 for a toner printer. - The printer heads seem to align themselves! Overall, I think the printer is a great idea, it does come through on its promises of making an inkjet printer as reliable as a laser printer just maybe not as cheap. Especially in an office setting when it has higher volume, we have printed over 19,000 pages on the printer so far. My staff are happy with the printer quality. It is very consistent. ... show more

  • Great Printer - Software doesn't like Windows 10
The printer itself is very impressive. Great print quality. Fast. Lots of features. The issue is with the 'HP Web Pak" software that installs all necessary drivers and some third-party apps. After installation, a number of elements of the software do not work. I've spent a number of hours on the phone with HP support who have told me that the issue is with Windows 10 and that I need to call Microsoft to address the problems. As one might expect, Microsoft tells me that since this is not Microsoft software, they cannot help and direct me back to HP for support. The ol' vendor back-and-forth debacle. So, while I can recommend the printer, I highly suggest you consider whether you're happy just using this as a printer vs. the full functionality of fax, scan, etc. Disappointing that Windows 10 has been out for years now and HP has still not effectively developed software that works with that OS. HP needs to up it's game in my humble opinion. So there it is, caveat emptor. ... show more

  • My second one. Such an amazing printer
This is the second printer I have purchased of this model series. The first one for my office this one for my house. The ink lasts forever. I get the XL cartridges and seriously lasts forever. My office one has lasted 4 years now and still going strong printing about 2000 pages a month. Buying ink about 2x a year. Color is amazing used it to print out picture quality photos on photo paper. Looks so professional and so easy to scan and even email docs from my phone to print when im on the road so they are waiting for me when I get to my home or office. Highly recommend. ... show more
