  • An affordable and reasonably compact tabloid format printer
Finding a tabloid format (11x17) capable printer which can fit both the space and the budget is usually a challenge - such printers are typically built on high-capacity platforms and are only suitable for large offices. This OfficeJet Pro 9720 manages to find the right balance between delivering wide format capability, while remaining reasonably compact, and is a perfect entry point for a SoHo or a small business which needs to occasionally print 11x17 pages. While this printer is significantly wider than a typical OfficeJet Pro, its size is manageable, and HP came up with a few workarounds to keep the depth of the printer reasonably small for as long as tabloid size pages are not in active use. When loading 11x17, the paper tray gets extended forward by about 3 inches, and while this may not make for the most attractive solution, it is certainly a functional one. Similarly, the manual feed tray has a second extension built into it, which enables these wide format pages to rest securely on it. However, once you are done with 11x17 pages, both the main tray and the manual feed can be folded back in, reducing the printer's footprint. This printer is quite heavy - both the box it arrives in as well as the printer itself weigh roughly 3 times as much as a comparable letter/legal size printer - but it is still manageable for a single individual to unbox and set up. The initial process is typical of HP: plug in, power on, install the included setup cartridges, and run the software installation, which more or less takes care of the rest. I did have some hiccups with software installation on one of my computers, but that was mostly due to lack of resources on that very dated system, and eventually it sorted itself out. All functions within the software worked as expected - printing, scanning and so on. The scanner on top is only designed to support legal size pages (8.5x14"), if you are looking for a tabloid-size scanning check out the next model up (9730e). With the scanner glass only taking up a portion of the top there is a lot of unused space there, which is great for some manual scanning jobs, but is a bit of a nuisance for others. The document feeder works consistently and reliably. As with all current HP printers, the set of ink cartridges you get in the box is a "starter" type, and you will be lucky if those last you more than a couple of hundred pages, so either plan on getting a fresh set of "HP 936" cartridges soon (about $145), or sign up for HP's Instant Ink plan (you get the first three months free). If you decide to go on the subscription plan, HP will send you the extra capacity cartridges, and those usually last a while. Keep in mind that once you sign up for the Instant Ink plan, stopping the subscription will mean having to buy a new cartridge set at that point - even if you are still using your starter set. • Great addition to my small business workflow
I ordered this printer for my art business to help with the more administrative aspects, and it’s proven to be a reliable all-in-one printer. Setup was easy, and I love that it supports wide-format printing which can be perfect for posters, zines, and mockups. Text prints are sharp and professional, while color prints look vivid, though slightly more saturated than what my Epson photo printer produces. Scanning and copying is fast and clear (this is actually much better than my Epson), and the ADF feature saves me a lot of time with bulk scans. I did run into a small hiccup with Wi-Fi pairing at first, but once connected, it’s stayed stable. Ink seems to run out fairly quickly with heavy use, but maybe I'm just used to the longevity of Epson inks. Overall, it’s a solid, versatile printer that handles both everyday office tasks and creative projects (with limitations) easily. ... show more

  • Great printer!
Great all in one printer overall for those who have the need to print at a larger scale especially for small businesses. This is a great printer that can print at fast speeds and comes with high-yield ink so that your print jobs last a long time before needing to replace the cartridges. Downloading the HP app makes setting up this printer super easy as it has the ability to automatically connect to your local network settings. The initial setup walks you through updating the printer’s firmware which is great as HP ensure customer security building software for their hardware to last. The printer is mostly white which will match with your existing office decor. I’m overall impressed with the quality of this printer! ... show more

  • A very impressive White Elephant
I'm writing this review as a long-time user of HP equipment. We've got a number of HP devices in our home and we've trusted HP printers for many years. So, I write this as a big supporter of HP products. And that's why I'm advising customers not to purchase this machine as long as HP is selling its replacement ink cartridges for a suggested retail price, as of today, of $145. Anyone who uses home printers regularly understands that the prices of new machines are not the real cost to consider. The real cost lies in replacement cartridges and, we've all come to accept that these cartridges, if they're real HP products, will be expensive. And, we've all come to understand that pretty much any other high quality printer will have similarly expensive replacement cartridges. But this is too much! My wife and I can't afford that price. In reviewing this machine, which is otherwise a technological marvel and offers lots of sophisticated options, I can affirm that I'd love to have this machine operating in my home. But we just can't spend that much on cartridges. Then, I asked several friends who use home printers if they would consider getting a high-end machine like this, and every one of them said they'd never order it, despite its very nice array of features, because of that ink cost. So, in the end, it's a very impressive White Elephant. ... show more

  • Professional printer, but a bit slow
The media could not be loaded. This printer provides high-quality prints in wide format, but the speed at which the pages are printed is quite slow. It has numerous functions, from wireless printing, scanning multiple pages, along with being able to print from your phone through its app. The printer itself is very large in size. You receive ink cartridges, which are easy to insert, and they function right away. However, the price of the replacement cartridges costs almost as much as half the printer. The touch screen is easy to use; however, you are not able to tilt it to view it better. It is a professional printer, ideal for any small business, and provides high-quality prints. Overall, it is easy to use and functions well; however, the ink cartridges will end up costing a lot to replace. ... show more
