  • Many software problems, do not buy!
Style: 24-inch Plotter Printer
I agree with Robert G. The software for the Z9 is terrible. The Z9 is my 5th HP large format printer. The last one was the Z3200. It was a good a printer, and with a few upgrades would have been a great printer. But HP had to go ahead and design a completely new printer. One that I feel was rushed and full of problems. Many compatibility issues with the Adobe Creative Cloud. Forget about printing PDF files with Adobe Acrobat. You will need to download HP Click to do that. I get errors every day with HP Click. Borderless printing of images from Photoshop, images are racked. White borders on at least two sides and the colors are "off". Many hours on the phone with HP reps. They know the Z9 has problems. If you want a 24" wide format HP printer. Try to find a refurbished Z3200. Then hope they replace the Z9 series with something better before it dies. Or, go with the Canon imagePROGRAF. I would have, but the Canon is too big to fit through my doorway. The starter cartridges are ridiculously small. You will have to buy the full size ones right away at a cost of over $1,400.00. No USB connection for the printer. You have to use an ethernet connection. In the last month, the Z9 started running a 5 step "preparing print system" every week. Timed it today, It took 48 minutes. What a waste of time! I checked the ink level on a couple of low cartridges before the interruption. Ink level dropped by 3%. So every week it is wasting 3% of the ink cartridge's. You will have problems with this printer every week, if not every day. ... show more

  • Worth the Money
Style: 24-inch Plotter Printer
I’ve owned several design jet printers. Of all of them, this seems to be the highest quality and easiest to use. I have the 24 inch printer. It prints very, very nice photo quality posters. I think it’s a reasonably priced machine. Your greatest expenditure will be the ink. Two complete supplies of ink for this printer cost as much as a printer does it self though. However, a set of cartridges (nine) should print 135 posters - 24” X 36”. ... show more

  • If you like spending your hours standing next to a malfunctioning printer
Style: 24-inch Plotter Printer
I was very excited to get my shiny new DesignJet Z9 Printer. It arrived on a pallet and it was monstrous in size - what could possibly go wrong? Well, where do I start. Brand new printer - yet on initial start, more errors than I have ever imagined occurring: Print head maligned. No ink initialization, feeder motor out of sync, paper not recognized - you name it. OH, and before you even get to the initial setup - FIRMWARE upgrade needed - no option to skip. No problem - they attached a crappy USB stick - WHICH DID NOT WORK. So I had to use my own USB stick, spend an hour finding and downloading the right 1.7 GB worth of firmware to UPGRADE a brand new printer I had just bought. Go figure. HP wants you to not only do the final assembly, but also software maintenance. Once that thing was finally booting (and I am not kidding you, it takes between 8 and 17 minutes to boot each time, depending on what random 'initialization' it chooses to run through - it will not recognize the paper ! If you have ever seen Seinfeld's 'soup Nazi' - This is the printer Nazi! Why? First, you have no easy way of returning that crappy machine - and HP knows that. That's why they let you do all the final fixing. Then, they force you into buying their crappy, overpriced paper - BECAUSE EPSON's is incompatible with the spindle size and wiggles around so you get paper jams when there is no paper jam. Printheads, ink - you are all in for life of the printer. The worst part it: IT SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK. Yes, it will print one print, but then go into failure mode of random sorts. Paper mismatch. Preparing print and then randomly crash. 'CALL HP REPRESENTATIVE'. Yes, right, in the middle of the worst pandemic of our lifetimes I'll have the HP rep roaming through my house. AND this silly machine asks you to 'reboot' the printer every 5 minutes - which is insane considering a reboot fixes nothing and takes anywhere from 7 to 18 minutes (not even kidding). I spent hours standing by the silly printer staring at it wondering what it's doing (or not doing). It randomly performs 'self maintenance' where it proudly announces 'preparing print system' and makes A LOT of fan noise and a lot of printer head noise - basically like hammering nails in the wall. VERY pleasant when this thing self-maintains in the middle of the night and your guard dog goes ballistic as it sounds like your windows are getting smashed by a burglar. It's sad, but I honestly don't know where to stop. Even on those images that I did eventually manage to print - 23 inch by 30 inch - the postscript 'processing' took over 20 minutes ! Again, brand new printer - delivered with ink cartridges that are HALF EMPTY (HP calls them HP INTRODUCTORY). That when a new set of ink cartridges costs as much as the entire printer. This is a $2900 machine that requires wired ethernet and does not have WIFI! The printer driver for a Mac computer alone takes up over 1 GB of space. At this point, it does NOT MATTER AT ALL that the actual print quality, IF you can get it to print, is actually quite acceptable - what's the point of having one nice print when it took you 3 hours of uncertain outcome for ONE print that you could have had printed in better quality online for $12. What you are saying by buying this infinity conundrum contraption is that your own three hours worth of time are worth less than $12 - or less than $4 an hour. Now I don't know about you, but our local hobo down at the intersection begging makes more than that. Perhaps that's the target demographics HP is shooting for. Picketing signs, protest signs, hobo signage. You get it. If you are still adventurous enough to give this 140lbs. experimental performance art paperweight a try, go ahead and prove me wrong. I am filing that one away under 'stranded investment, though. Thank you, HP - and enjoy my $2900. ... show more

  • Too many problems...
Style: 24-inch Plotter Printer
Our school purchased this printer in January of 2023 to replace an older HP Model from many years ago. I'm not happy that we did. Since it was taken out of the box it has failed to be in working order for going on 5 out of the 7 months school has been insession, (Spring 2023 an the beginning of September 2023). It started with the entire printer carriage not moving appropriately and a ink cartridge not being recognized, software issues, and continual print head replacements required. Luckily it's still under warranty or we'd be out a lot of money. I knew that we'd be responsible for consumables like ink and paper, and eventually maintenance, but we'd also like to print posters and classroom material which hasn't been able to happen. The customer service hasn't been that good either, in that getting an HP technician to actually come out and look at the unit is like asking for an act of god. Though when a printhead needs to be changed, and they're under warranty, HP is very quick about shipping a replacement to you. For the short while it was working, the prints were of decent quality. For the amount of money being spent, I'd expect it to be working right out of the box with appropriate software and no issues. ... show more
