Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear. • Amazing
Color: Dark Walnut
I should have taken a before and after photo. We had a buffet that had been damaged surface wise! Wow! This product made the buffet look practically nice. It is reasonably priced and does a wonderful job! I highly recommend it!

  • A must-have for anyone who loves antique furniture
Color: Dark Walnut
Restor-A-Finish is a good product that I have used for years - going back to the days when it only came in two colors: dark and light. Now I can get a shade that will work with almost any wood finish. I have used this to clean and refresh antique and vintage furniture, to rehydrate old wood, and as an ordinary furniture polish. But here's the best thing about Restor-A-Finish: as any antique dealer will tell you, refinishing a valuable antique will diminish its value, and Restor-A-Finish will bring a scruffy old piece back to life quickly and easily without destroying the original finish. So if you like antiques, you need this. 😉 ... show more

  • Great for it's intended use - restoring existing finish
Color: Dark Walnut
This stuff is super easy for even a total beginner. What it's *best* at is helping to lift scuff marks, ie stuff on top of the existing finish that you don't want. It's also good at evening out the finish - kinda like blurring primer for your face? Or top coat on a smudged manicure? Cuz what it seems to do is slightly soften the existing finish, then enhance/ blend it with the tint of whatever color you chose. I used Dark Walnut, and it worked fine on 3 different pieces of furniture that were all different shades of medium-dark brown. What it doesn't work for: • filling in scratches • evening out dents or nicks in the wood itself • covering specks of bare wood Maybe unsurprisingly, I got better results on my higher quality pieces of furniture. On cheap veneer, i was left with kind of a scratched up mess. ... show more

  • Cheaper than wood refinishing
Color: Dark Walnut
Instead of a full kitchen cabinet refinish this works well to improve the looks of worn cabinets.

  • mildly disappointed
Color: Dark Walnut
This product was just okay. Its effect was similar to the effect I get by using something like olive oil. It didn't have any long-lasting effect. The product page promises to "restore wood finishes while blending out minor scratches, blemishes and abrasions" and to remove " white heat rings and water marks, sun fade, oxidation, smoke damage and most other blemishes." Heat rings and areas where the finish is lessened from lots of contact with people's arms is my major concern, and it just didn't have much effect there. Although it looked great after application and for a few hours afterwards, the effect wore off quickly as the product dried. I tried applying every day or two for a while, hoping there would be a cumulative effect, but the table looks the same now as before I started. I'll go back to using olive oil, which gets me the same effect for much cheaper and lasts longer (and smells better, too). ... show more

  • Works Well for Quick Wood Touch-Ups
Color: Dark Walnut
This product does a decent job at improving the look of worn wood surfaces without a lot of effort. It helped reduce scratches and brought back some color, especially on darker areas. However, the finish doesn’t last as long as a full refinish, and the smell is quite strong during application. It’s useful for quick touch-ups, but not a permanent solution if the wood is heavily damaged. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ... show more
