Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear. • Average results
I guess I thought this would "fill in" the scratches on my antique entry table. This product is a very thin, semi-tinted, vinegar-smelling substance. It did not fill, or stain the scratches on my table. Tip: after applying this product, you'll need to wipe it down with a clean cloth to remove any residue, or this product will stain whatever you put on top. In my case, I have a table runner across the top of my table, so I had to wipe the piece down several times with a clean cloth each time before I could put my table runner back on. ... show more

  • Instant Results
I learned of this products use from a vintage furniture store. They used it to instantly update the finish and restore wood furniture. Use a very fine steel wool (00) to apply and it will remove all surface scratches. Amazing and instant results.

  • Didn't work as advertised
I had a minor water stain that I had hoped it would cover since that's what was advertised. Unfortunately I've discovered that anything that has a polyurethane finish it won't work on. It's won't absorb into the finish. If it's a Shellac or Lacquer finish it will probably work well on them. To test for that use a little bit of alcohol on a Q-tip and wipe in an inconspicuous spot. If it comes off then you probably have Shellac or a Lacquer finish. Don't spend your money if it's not. It would be nice if that was advertised. ... show more

  • Wonderful product
I was shocked at how well this worked on my grandmother’s 1920s dresser. I thought I would have to have it refinished professionally but this product worked so well I don’t plan to do anything else.

  • Don’t understand the praise
I don’t understand the praise, this didn’t do anything but make my furniture glossy. Didn’t do anything at all for water marks, wear or chips and dings. Tried buffing lightly with fine steel wool over water marks but just took the finish off. This product did nothing to “restore.” Nice for a polish, but that’s about it. Not why I bought it though. Wouldn’t recommend or repurchase. Go with stain markers, worked so much better. Faster, less messy with little to no fumes and filled in the dings and wear much more effectively. ... show more

  • Miracle product
I used this on an old piano I adopted that had a ton of visible scratches. It's amazing how you can't see the scratches at all anymore from even close up unless you knew where to look. Great product, highly recommend!
