My new serger came with great technical documentation, but no examples of what the different stitches are used for, or really useful troubleshooting techniques. I figured out a little and then bought this book. All the information I sought is right here. Granted it's probably fairly basic stuff, but it's just what I needed to know and is presented in a very user-friendly manner. There are multiple examples of uses for various stitches (and plenty of pictures) that helped me connect them with their names so I could get more value from the documentation booklet supplied with the machine. This book isn't machine specific so using both together gave me the best results. I greatly appreciate the troubleshooting section of the book as it describes what to look for first, second, etc, when you're not getting the results you expect, and again, lots of pictured examples to help you identify your exact problem. Since I'd just gone through one such episode, eventually finding the problem on my own, I knew this book was right on target (and if I'd had it sooner, I'd have saved that hour of frustration). There are also tips and tricks that have really helped me, such as how to change threads more easily. I must say the serger intimidates me a little, but this book has made the learning curve much shorter and I know I will continue to get use from it as my skills mature because there are examples of more complicated things I look forward to trying. I've found it well worth the purchase.

I can't say enough about this book. I ordered a serger on line and I had a particular purpose in mind. You have to know that I failed sewing in school, have owned five sewing machines since then and never learned to use any of them properly. Before it was delivered I ordered this book from Amazon with one day shipping and so I had it for two days before the serger arrived. During those two days I read it from cover to cover and then over again. I was still terrified but felt that I had learned a lot. My machine came pre-threaded and so I sat right down to practice. Voila a great first try, but now for my projects' rolled hem. I read my machines instructions and was able do it on my practice fabric. Now I needed to change thread colors. The tie on method didn't work for me so I decided to thread from scratch. I read my manual and watched the video, followed all of the instructions and thought I had done it right, but the thread broke and so did the needle. Then I remembered the book had mentioned broken thread and needles and so I went right to the chapter. There was the answer. "The lower looper thread must overlap the upper looper thread otherwise the thread will break every time". Why didn't the manual or the video mention this? If I never learn another thing, that little gem of advice was worth the price, but the book is full of all the information I need. It has a place of honor on a shelf above my sewing table and will be there for years to come. If you are a newbee like me, buy this book. You won't regret it.

I just got the Brother 1034D serger, and this book was really helpful to me as I taught myself how to use my serger. Between this book and a few youtube videos I got the basics of serging down quickly and am loving my serger. There are lots of great color photos on every page, that help you learn how to recognize if your stitch looks correct, and if you need to adjust the tension and more! This book has tons of helpful tips for the the newbie. The one downside to this book for me, is that they don't show photos of the Brother 1034D serger. They have great photos of the Singer Quantum lock 5, the Berina 2000DE, and the Pfaff Hobbylock 776. They show those machines in detail. It would have been nice if it had my machine pictured, but They can't show all machines suppose. Even with no photo of my Brother, this book was still really helpful and I highly recommend it. PS I LOVE my Brother 1034d!

This book is very informative. The book is filled with colorful photos on each page. The author discusses the different types of stitches and explains how to adjust tensions for a balanced stitch. There is information on how to stitch corners, curves, rolled hems, flatlocking, and how to correct problems when stitching. The back of the book has information devoted to troubleshooting. I think that Chris James wrote this book for people like me who love having a serger, but are still learning how to work with one.

This book is a fantastic reference tool. I have other serger books, but this one is the only one in my library that comprehensively & clearly explains what the components of the serger are & what they do. It also explains what each of stitches look like & what each is best for. It has great troubleshooting info, as well. While it's a beginner level book, I expect that I'll have this beside my serger & refer to it frequently for quite a while to come. There's enough info in there that would make it worthwhile for an experienced sewist/serger user. I agree with another commenter who said that the book should be spiral bound. I may take it to Office Depot or Staples & have them do it for me.

I was new to using my serger, so I needed some help. I inherited it from my aunt, so it came with no manual and when I downloaded the manual from the manufacturer, it was more confusing! So, bought this little book and away I went. Absolutely love using my serger now. The illustrations are excellent and the instructions you will find in this book will help you to understand the various features of any serger. It is not model specific, so the general instructions and photos help you troubleshoot and set up your machine for excellent stitching every time. I particularly like that it is written in very understandable language and has chapters/sections that make sense in how they are divided. Thanks for a great book!

I just finished reading this book from cover to cover. It has some small flaws that the editor should have noticed and corrected, but it is printed in China where workmanship is shoddy. Still, the publisher should have noted missing text before selling it to the public. Pictures are good and there are plenty of them. For me, there should have been more for the more complex concepts. This is a very good beginner book, but you should have your machine's documentation nearby so you can use the information presented here to better understand and USE your machine. It's a short book because the author does not go into any detail beyond the basic information, but after reading it, you'll have a much better understanding of how a serger works so that you can figure out how tension, stitch length, stitch width, thread, material, etc, affect the final product. Of course, another more advanced book, plus lots of experimentation will help to master the serger beyond the basics presented here.

Its nice if you already know how to serge. I do not and still don't--When I can figure that part out then I think this book would be useful but until then if you are brand new to serging and need to know a step by step on how to construct garments ect...then just wait on it. I have a brother 1034 so some things just don't pertain to my machine so I was confused and stressed. If I had the exact machine she was using it would be more helpful. I learned more from youtube than this book.
