So, in the first probably few weeks you will most likely smell a smell of the cast iron settling in and getting rid of that industrial smell, I personally ran a cord outside and let it run for many hours to avoid the smell, run it outside on a nice day. Reasons I love this grill: It can boil water, unlike some electric grills which take way longer to get things to the boiling point, if I set this grill up and just be patient about 10 minutes longer than gas would take, so set it and forget it while I prep other things I can count on this hot plate to boil water and save me the gas from the butane grill that I use for other things. I honestly am debating on getting a few more of these to have around! They are great for a cooktop replacement. Reasons I don't like this grill: It is harder to control the temperature of this grill due to the fact that is a cast iron plate, it takes a very very long time to get this hot plate to lower temperature due to the cast iron hot plate attached, I would not use this plate on items that require temperatures being lowered and raised for different cooking needs, I would use this as a quick/efficient hot plate that can take on the tasks that require a very hot surface to cook like the following- boiling, searing steaks, soups, chili. My Situation: I live in a finished loft apartment that I rent out more like a room with an extended bathroom, we had permission from the landlord to make a kitchen-like area, but a stove seems like an excessive add-on, so I use conventional toaster ovens for baking/cooking and Hot plates for cooking our food on a stove, it has worked out great so far it actually feels like a full apartment, just with a few extra steps. The Landlord let us put a sink in to help with dishes & a countertop too! What that means is I've used this grill a lot since the time I bought it, I have no complaints minus the fact that it can be pretty hard to clean & that sometimes it takes a long time to cool off but that's cast iron, those are just facts of life. ... show more

Only reason not full 5 stars is because all the words (on and off and some arrows) all wiped off from like two uses. Not sure if the paint they used isn’t up to snuff with the appliance getting hot or what but there are no visual indicators on it at all now except the numbers on the dial itself. This was a good appliance but I switched to induction stove but wanted to keep a few of my original pots. The burner size is only 6.5" so you are limited by the size of the pot base. In the end, I returned and just decided to buy additional induction pots that met my needs. Good product. Just didn't work for me. ... show more

Bought this to help with boiling and frying foods. We have a glass cook top on our stove and it is real hard to boil or fry foods. Thought this hot plate would help. It took me 12 minutes to boil 2 inches of water in a 7.5 inch pan. Took olny 9 min. on stove top. Will be retuning.

His gas bill went from $16 dollars a month to over $550 a month in one month in California. He turned off the gas and is using this wonderful little appliance to cook his meals now. He loves it but sad that he can not use gas any longer. He’s on a fixed income and retired.
