I find myself conflicted over this product. I don’t know if it’s the type of wood I tried this out with, but it seems rather difficult to make kindling with this thing. I’ll have a piece of wood about 12” long and when I try to split it in thin splits only pieces about 4” will shoot off of it. In my opinion it’s takes much more work than hatchet or axe. I don’t think it’s even that much safer. If you have any self awareness, just use a hatchet. You won’t be as frustrated and you’ll get the job done much faster.

For the first job out of the box I tried a somewhat large piece of sweet gum, which is notorious for being hard to split, just out of curiosity. Normally, that is a task for a wedge and my 16 pound sledge. The wood barely fit inside the upper ring and I wondered if it would jam from expanding on the way down. I beat on it pretty good with a 4 pound hammer; the wood didn't split BUT the Hongmai took the beating in stride. I was concerned I might break the tool but it took the abuse. I then tried a piece of seasoned cherry wood and it split with a couple blows. It's a neat looking device and doesn't take up much space. I really like it. It's almost like a piece of yard art sitting on the back porch, and a lot neater than leaving a hatchet out. Update: I tried another piece of sweet gum, aka Liquid Amber, and this time I used my 16 lb sledge. I only hit it from about 1 1/2 to 2 feet above but that is some substantial force. A few hits and the wood yielded. I would not try to do that all day long, I don't think the device is made for that but it did work and will certainly do lesser tasks for a long time. Search "sweet gum firewood" and you'll see it has a poor rating due to the difficulty in splitting.

Tried splitting an old chunk of oak using a 3lb hammer, it took a few blows but eventually split. I set it on the ground and it jumps around a bit. It's light and needs a solid base. Otherwise, it works just fine.
