  • Nice fan with a couple of flaws
Color: Matte Nickel
Good: Clean, attractive, contemporary look. Reversible blades look good on both sides. Quiet; barely audible even in a quiet room. Well-balanced out of the box; a tiny wobble on high speed, nothing at all on low or medium. Relatively easy to install, with one caveat (see below). I thought the remote control frivolous, but it turns out that the lack of pull-chains is nice. (And hardwired switch-box controls are surprisingly hard to find and to make work well.) LED bulbs and remote batteries included. ETL listed and lifetime warranty. Bad: $65 premium for the pewter finish, no idea why. Makes this fan rather expensive for what you get. The wireless receiver / motor control sits in a slot in the mounting bracket, which is fine unless your electrical box is shallow and/or crowded (mine is both,) in which case the receiver box BARELY leaves room for the power connections. Extending the bracket another inch, or widening the canopy a little to let the receiver sit to one side of the bracket, would have made installation a breeze. As it was, I had to do some serious juggling to get everything to fit. Ugly: Once installed and powered up, every fan and light function can be controlled with the remote. Except one. For reasons which still mystify me, reversing the fan direction involves not only a physical switch on the fan, but a switch *behind the lamp cover*. Now, granted, most people reverse the fan only twice per year, if at all. But if you do, you get to go up a ladder and remove and replace a rather awkward and delicate glass globe to throw that switch. I'd put the over/under on the glass slipping out of my hands and taking a seven-foot plunge during one of these switchovers at about five years. I'm not an engineer, but I see no excuse at all for this. At least one of the eight remote control buttons is frivolous (and i could argue two more;) was it really *that* difficult to add that function to the remote? Would have simplified the lamp wiring quite a bit too. Bottom line: Aside from the above, I'm impressed with this fan. Looks good, performs well, looks like it'll continue to do so for a long time. But I'm not going to reverse the fan unless I absolutely have to. Five stars, but it was a very close thing; the high price and that hidden reverse switch very nearly cost it that fifth star. ... show more

  • Beautiful Fan, Installation Was a Challenge Beautiful Fan, Installation Was a Challenge
Color: Bronze
The Honeywell Carmel 48” Ceiling Fan looks beautiful in our space, but I’ll admit the installation was more complicated than we expected — there were definitely a lot of parts to sort through. That said, once we got it put together, we could tell how well thought out the design is. The fan runs quietly, the airflow is great, and the remote is super convenient. One thing I really appreciate is that it came with warm LED lights, which can be surprisingly hard to find. Overall, despite the tricky installation, it’s a stylish, functional fan that we’re happy with. ... show more

  • There's an air movement trick . . . There's an air movement trick . . .
Color: Bronze
This is a great looking fan, and it runs without any wobble . . . no balancing necessary. The blades are a dark (walnut) brown, and a black w/ gray wood grain on the reverse side. I installed this as a flush mount (which probably helps with wobble) in our bedroom, without the included short down rod. This puts the fan blades' upper edges right at 4 inches from the ceiling. The ceiling is 96 inches (8 ft) and the light globe is at 86.5 inches (9.5 inches down) which is over 7 feet from the floor. The lower edge of the blades are at 91 inches. Plenty of head room. One problem with the close / flush mount is the small area above the blades restricts air movement. As the fan spins, air is forced outward as well as down. The outward flow "blocks" the movement of air to the top of the fan and reduces the efficiency pretty drastically. There are two solutions to this problem, one which I've tested. The trick is to simply reverse the fan direction. The outward movement of air is still there, but now it assists the upward moving air to blow out and around the room. I would say the air movement on the Low Speed is just as good with the fan blowing upward as it is on High Speed with the fan blowing down. Feels great laying on the bed in our 12 x 15 foot room. (Just as a note, the reverse thing in the winter is really only effective if you have a big room with high ceilings. You run a fan on a very low speed to bring the warm air down along the outer walls from above, but hopefully without noticeable air movement. With this fan In a smaller room, you'll feel the air flow which has a chilling affect.) The other possible solution is to mount the fan with the down rod. This will lower the fan about 4 inches ( a guess, with the include 4" rod) from the ceiling - which would be OK in most situations for an 8 foot ceiling - and give more room for air flow. If you try this, please leave a comment! There is a bit of motor hum, but its only annoyingly noticeable on the high speed; and since the air movement noise is greater than the buzz, it mostly gets drowned out. Not a deal breaker for me. I wired mine so that the existing light switch (which used to only operate wall outlets) turns on/off the light, but the fan is directly powered and is operated solely by the remote. My light switch is NOT a dimmer switch, so I get full light intensity with the switch, which means if you have the light on - via the remote - at a dimmed setting, the wall switch will allow you to switch between full on and the dimmed setting. You'll need the remote to turn the light off if you use it to turn the light on. I've included a wiring diagram if you want to wire yours this way. (BTW, you can just run the hot wire through the switch and directly to the red wire for the Controller. Then when you turn on the switch the fan & light will be in the state they were when you turned them off. Not quite as versatile but OK.) ... show more

  • Low air movement and no reverse function on the remote, vibration noise is AWFUL!
Color: Brushed Nickel
These fans are nice looking but that’s the extent of it. The pitch of the blades is almost zero (meaning they lay almost flat, the more angled they are the more air they move) so they don’t work as well as they could. Also, to reverse the air flow up or down you have to remove the glass and toggle the switch. This should be a remote function but you get what you pay for. The remotes for two of the five fans are temperamental and it isn’t a battery issue. They work when they feel like it. You have to coax them into turning on or off the light. I didn’t pay to have two toddlers in my house. They are also the ones we use the most. After having them installed for a few months I’ve noticed that all 5 units we have installed click as if something inside has shaken loose. If I tilt them or wiggle them a bit it sometimes helps for up to a couple of days but it is awful! Unfortunately it’s past the point of returning them so they are going in the trash. UPDATE: Two years later and we are going to replace all five. These are the absolute worst. The remotes for the two we used the most in the bedroom and TV room won’t work unless you stand under the fan and on the side where the remote control signal is which means I have to get out of bed and go to the foot of my husband’s side of the bed to turn the fan on. But that’s okay because it starts to rattle after a few minutes so it’s not worth using anyway. The TV room fan is quiet but only on low. Anything higher and it starts to rattle too. Again, you must get up and stand in front of the TV to get it to turn on or off. These were both installed correctly, we’ve checked that they may be misaligned but the guy who looked at them shook his head and said “pieces of crap”. The one in the guest room is rarely used, maybe 10 times in two years and it rattles too but at least you can turn it on and off from in bed but what’s the point when you can’t sleep? The ones in the kitchen and the living room work better but I think maybe it’s because they have a pole and aren’t flush against the ceiling. I am baffled that these are still selling and shame on the people giving a high star rating but saying how bad they really are. No one should have to go through the process of getting a good product the first time but I guess we almost got what we paid for. ... show more

  • Quiet, Balanced, Simple, Bright
Color: Bronze
These are so much better then some other fans I bought. They have a more "traditional" look than the low-profile fan I had before, but it was very simple to assemble by myself, and mounted easily as well. I didn't have to use the balance tabs at all, and the color options allowed me to match up the room decor with ease (as much as I know how). Tips: 1) Do NOT assemble beforehand. Even with a helper, it will be much easier to just attach the blades and light afterwards. 2a) Make sure that you have a proper drop box in the ceiling. I highly recommend the box with the twist arm that extends between the joists. This is an after build (RETRO) style that can replace your light fixture box. Removing the old one can be a pain. I recommend using a Sawzall or jigsaw to cut the nails, once the wires are retracted. Get professional help if you are at all uneasy doing this. You don't want to go electrocuting yourself or cut through a joist! 2b) DO NOT use a standard light fixture box, even if it is rated to 50 lbs. They are not designed to handle the sway when the blades rotate. 2c) I further recommend the retro electrical box style with the square rod over the round rod, as with the square one your can truly tighten it down a bit more beyond hand tightening using a wrench (be sure to not OVER torque and crack the joists). 3) Get a remote (around $20) to operate these, and be sure to PROGRAM the remote and receiver ahead of time! I forgot on 1 of the 3 I bought, and I had to disassemble the whole thing to flip two tiny switches in the remote base! 4) Use the added pull chain hole in the light cap for the fan speed pull chain. Aligning it can be a small challenge, but once lined up, it will work quite well as an override in case the remote fails. 5) With the remote hooked up, the pull chains will operate differently. For instance, if you turn the fan on high with the remote, the pull chain will toggle it between low/med/high like normal. However, if you turn the fan on low with the remote, the pull chain will now toggle as ultra low, very low, and low. Keep this in mind. I'm not sure myself, but i wouldn't recommend running the at these abnormal settings, as the motor was likely not designed for them. 6) If you get multiple fans and remotes, MARK YOUR REMOTES in some way that helps determine which one is for which room. This will save you the frustration of walking room to room and clicking away to find out if the remote is for that room. I marked a small number on the back of the remote and on the hanger base. Just match them up! ... show more
