  • Beast of a machine with an achilles heel. Beast of a machine with an achilles heel.
I bought this 724 track drive from a local dealer in 11/15 and have used it for 3 1/2 seasons. I added an hour meter when the machine was delivered and I currently have 11.9 hours of use clocked - not much really. The winters have been mild lately, hence the low hour usage on the machine. I live north of Buffalo , NY and when we do get snow, it's typically 12-18 inches of lake effect snow off of Lake Erie or Lake Ontario so the machine gets a real workout. One annoying problem has appeared recently after 3+ seasons. The motorized chute rotation control for left to right movement became non-functional to the left direction last week while I was using the machine after a 12 inch snowfall. The top diverter/flipper still worked. There are no fuses that I saw in the wiring diagram so it was either the joystick or the motor. Of course the 36 month residential warranty expired 2 months ago. Using the service manual, which is a "must have" accessory, I diagnosed the problem as a defective chute joystick controller. The chute motor works fine in both directions with 12 volt external power so that ruled the motor out. There is intermittent continuity on the left hand rotation on the switch - bingo - bad switch after TWELVE hours of use! OK, I get it, stuff goes bad, even on a Honda. I called every dealer within a 50 mile radius and NO ONE had the controller switch. I wound up ordering it on line with it will take 2 weeks to deliver unless I pay an extra $70 and then it's one week. The switch(es - I bought 2 because if one can go bad, so can 2) and installed it just now - problem fixed. That said, I'm NOT a fan of the motorized chute setup, it's needless overkill. Hence the 1 star deduction on the "overall", "ease of use" and "feature" scores. The power chute is slow to turn L/R relative to a hand crank, prone to problems like i described above and it introduces a litany of potential long term service issues down the road because you now have a joystick, wiring harness, 2 motors and power flipper assembly to screw around with that can all potentially fail always at the worst time like in the middle of a 12 inch snow fall. Other 1 point deduction is for the difficulty maneuvering the machine, even with the power track controls. This machine is heavy and beastly - it's a workout even for a 220 pound life long weightlifter like me. It also pops shear pins far too easily but I guess that's required to protect the transmission. Bottom line is that this machine is a tank but Honda out thought themselves with the finicky, complicated power rotating chute that has TWO motors - one for the rotation the other for the top flipper direction flap. Maybe it's a "keeping up with the competition" mindset by Honda but for me, the hand crank on my old 928 worked fine and was absolutely bulletproof. I'm really irritated that I can't find the part locally and that NO ONE on line can supply the part in less than 2 weeks, So I bought two of the joystick controllers ($35 each) so I have one on hand when the other new one dies. I love Honda power equipment and have owned Honda snowblowers since 1990 but based on the fact that the dead chute rotation joystick has taken my machine out of service for 2+ weeks in the middle of lake effect snow season, I'm not happy, especially 2 months out of warranty. See the attached photo for the bad switch. It's Honda part number 35360-V45-02 switch control - $36 each from PartsPak online - best price with shipping. Oh, and buy 2 at time because they take so long to get from anyone online. ... show more
