  • GPS and Compass!
Style: M100-5883 GPS
What a great GPS at an unbelievably low price. I installed one in my latest drone build and powered it up with Betaflight and it rapidly locked a dozen satellites while sitting on my desk. Having a compass combined with GPS has become a must for me. I will never again buy a GPS unit that does not have a compass. Note: your flight controller needs to have an Ic2 bus (SDA/SCL) to use the compass. ... show more

  • It Works and is Small and Affordable
Style: M100-5883 GPS
The HGLRC M100-5883 module consists of two sensors. A multi-system GNSS (GPS) with an antenna, and a 3-axis compass. The GNSS is compatible with U-BLOX’s 10th generation GNSS. The compass is a QMC5883 magnetometer. The module is very small, 21mm X 21mm X 8mm, and weighs 7.73 grams. It is meant to be used with drone controllers, and installation instructions for Betaflight and INAV are available at hglrc.com, the module’s source. The module has an interface that includes a serial and I2C port, along with Vcc and GND, through a 1mm JST connector. A short cable is provided. The GNSS comes with the serial port set to 115200 baud, and a sample rate of 10Hz. The default messages are: GNRMC, GNVTG, GNGGA, GNGSA, GPGSV, GAGSV, GBGSV, GQVSV, and GNGLL. The GNSS can be evaluated with U-BLOX’s U-Center2 software. I did not try to alter the default messages, use the U-BLOX’s condensed protocol, or update the unit’s firmware. So, I do not know if these functions are available. I did try to add a chart view of one of the UBX messages and was unsuccessful. You can record the log of the session and export it into U-Center and view such things as the deviation map. Within a short period, the unit was able to connect to 15-18 satellites from multiple GNSS clusters, while within my office. This was an accomplishment considering the modules small ceramic antenna, and the enclosed room. Testing was done using a TTL serial to USB converter using 3.3V levels connected to a PC. The module’s interface has a pin labeled 5V, however I ran the unit successfully at 3.3V levels. Both the GNSS unit and QMC5883 magnetometer are 3.3V chips. Since I do not have a schematic of the module, I do not know if proper level shifting was done to the RX input and I2C pullup resistors. I would be cautious and ensure all signals use 3.3V. This could be an issue with some Arduino chips. I connected the QMC5883 through the I2C interface to a Teensy 4.1 microprocessor. Using the QMC5882L compass library by Mprograms available on the Arduino library manager with some suggestions made by Robert’s Smorgasbord YouTube channel, I was able to calibrate the compass and use it successfully. You must calibrate the compass. In general, I find the QMC5883 very sensitive to stray electric fields and steel objects. This sensitivity is something you must be aware of when using it. The forward direction is the edge with the connector. Both sensors worked on the module I received. The GNSS is more impressive than the magnetometer, but both could be used to help control the path of a drone or a robot. This is a nice compact module at a very affordable price. ... show more
