  • Amazing GPS but not perfect
Style: 8" GPS
I've used GPS navigation tech in one form or another and the Garmin Dezl OTR series is the best yet. Google maps was my favorite until I started driving truck and needed truck specific routing. Well, I still use Google maps to find and confirm stop locations easier and use satellite view but the Garmin gets me there safely, most of the time. It has trouble with newly updated interchanges around some cities and also has had issues with construction zone routing. There are many instances when an on or off ramp are closed and Garmin will think the whole interstate is closed and will force a ridiculously out of the way reroute sometimes adding hours to my route when a simple quick detour would do. You cannot override, adjust, or turn this feature off. So, you have to bring up the route and make manual changes by either stopping or trying to do it while driving which is very dangerous. It would be nice if it offered options like it does with traffic alerts. My Garmin tried to take me under a low bridge once. It sometimes tells me to go one direction while showing me the opposite direction in the pop-up diagrams. It has locked up a few times and took 10 minutes or more to restart when I needed it most. The point here is that you cannot trust a GPS 100% of the time and always have to use the computer on your shoulders first, then, use a GPS as a guide. Also, it never hurts to have your route ready on Google maps as a backup. The features are far better than other GPS products. There are many I wish Google would adopt. The screen has great resolution and the touch features are as good as the best phones. The processor is a bit slow sometimes but does okay. I love this GPS on most days but sometimes it really drops the ball. ... show more

  • Nearly perfect GPS experience, aside from LONG booting time and occasional app crashes.
Style: 8" GPS
I bought my Garmin dezl 800 back in early 2021, and it's been ALMOST a pure joy to use. I have one serious criticism: in trying to cut corners on cheap parts like processor and memory, Garmin decided to put the absolute minimum power the unit, which affects performance when it's been running for a week. >Why would you run it for a week without rebooting? I'm glad you asked. You see, this thing takes a minimum of 20 minutes to cold boot from the power-off state. That, and the minimal memory causing occasional errors which crash the GPS app portion of the system (which auto-recovers, taking about 10 minutes to restart), are the flies in this otherwise impeccable soup. So far, after using it throughout 2021 and 2022 and a third of 2024, I've had the map app crash on me as I was nearing my exit twice. Yes, only twice, fortunately, but that caused me to have to be quick about programming google maps to get me to my destination. In traffic. Using voice command. Not too terrible, but not exactly an ideal situation to be in. Other than this one irksome flaw, the machine is about as perfect as a standalone GPS can be expected to be. Without this problem, I would have rated it 5 stars. Yes, the dezl 810 has a better processor and more memory (2x as much) but they REMOVED an important feature: side by side comparison of time and distance of alternate routes selected via route shaping. I'll never buy an 810 unless they add that feature back in or my 800 dies. ... show more

  • Absolute must have for a trucker!
Style: 8" GPS
I've had this thing for less than a week and it has already saved my butt a few times. This device is so great! I can find rest areas and truck stops and much more so easily and know the route getting there is OK for a 53 foot trailer behind me. I mainly use it as a backup GPS for my company preferred routes but I'm telling you this device is absolutely fantastic! My only gripe is it uses micro usb instead of usb c. Come on Garmin. Other than that I have zero complaints. I am OTR national lower 48, and I would pay double the price for this baby. It's worth it's weight in gold to a trucker. The fact it's magnetic and can be easily removed f4om the charging mount on the windshield is a big plus so I highly recommend getting the 8 inch for that feature also. Drive safe and buy this thing, you won't regret it. ... show more

  • Mostly accurate
Style: 8" GPS
I am an OTR trucker, and even with the problems, I think this is the best option. Much better than the RM competition. However, do not blindly trust it. Several times it tried to take me down pig trail roads when main roads were easily available. You can edit your route, and I do about 1/4 of the time. It does a great job as long as you are on interstates. A few glitches like when you add a stop to your route, 2 voices talk at the same time with the new directions. 😂 Only one bland voice to choose from. For the money, I expected more options. Overall, does a good job. Garmin could fix these things and I’d say 5 stars. ... show more

  • Very good
Style: 8" GPS
Lot more to say about this truck GPS, but I wanted to highlight most important for me as a heavy haul truck driver Pros - Accurate milage and ETAs - good for heavy hauls, you can put dimensions in case the load is oversize or over height did not lead me wrong so far - solid quality suction cup / easy to install - lots if other functions, but I don’t really use them Cons - even after update shows not existing rest areas in Oklahoma and California - something makes weird routes, thou I have been there and there was better route - software is not really user friendly, that’s why I use only GPS, needs some update ... show more

  • Great Improvement
Style: 8" GPS
I just moved from the Dezl 7" and have had it for 5 years. The detail is must greater and the ease of custom routing is better. This one is 8" and Im saying that because none of the aftermarket mounts will work with it. But I took the arm off the suction cup mount and put it into the Garmin rubber base mount. I had to file out about 1/8" on each side of the base to get the new arm in and then ran a screw and wing nut through it and it is perfect for the way i use it. The ball and socket is much bigger on this that the previous Garmins so for now you can only use what is supplied with it or customize like i did. Overall I am very pleased with it. The version I moved up from did not have the bus option and this new one does and you can create multiple vehicle profiles. All my saved locations transferred over very easily if you are backing it up with the desktop app. The only things that did not transport over were the custom avoidance points that i had saved like for certain bad roads or low bridges. Also if you use different icons for your saved locations they will not come over and everything will go to the default heart icon. But other that this it is a great improvement and I would recommend. The negative is the 600 dollar price tag. ... show more

  • Very Frustrating
Style: 8" GPS
I cannot get this mounted because the mount devices that come with it are very poor. There's not much adjustability and no matter where or how I put it, it blocks my vision when placed on the windshield. It also only stays for a short time before falling when on windshield. Haven't been able to mount on dash at all. I got a round disk thing that sticks to textured dash so I can then place this on it, but it falls right away. I bought an expensive mounting system that was supposed to have a dezl otr adapter, but I think it's just for the smaller versions, which it didn't say so. I have the 800, which I'm having trouble finding alternative mounts for. I think the only other option is to get a pro to install it on the dash with the screw version of the mount. I'll update this review if I'm ever able to actually use the device. Update: Still haven't been able to use it. Head mechanic from my company wouldn't screw mount it in because he says since the dashes are cheap plastic the shaking of the truck makes the weight of these things break apart the dash and they eventually fall. I tried that sticky tape stuff but it won't stick to texture, and tried another mount that holds up to 13 inch but the charger on the back of the garmin makes it way too thick for that mount. So still trying to figure out how to mount this a month later. ... show more
