For years I had the “creepy” type vacuums with the flat rubber pad, and with each year, my battles with algae became more frequent and tougher to defeat. I noticed the neighbor didn’t seem to have similar issues, so I bough the same pool vacuum he had - the Pool Cleaner. In the three years I have been using it, I have had no algae issues. I had no idea it could make such a huge difference. I don’t need the massive amount of pool chemicals and maintenance has become very easy. Since my purchase May 2022 and after 8 months of use I cannot recommend during the heavy leaf season. After a storm I'll scoop out the bulk of the debris, typically a 5 gallon buckets worth or this Hayward suction cleaner will stall when clogged. I've had to take apart twice to remove twigs and remove large leaves over a dozen times. This is a great pool sweep but I'm going back the Polaris 360 next fall. We also owned the Polaris 280, came with our home purchase September 2010 and lasted 4 years. It was getting old and showing wear. It needed a new hose, getting too stiff in the cold winter and needed an overhaul, about $300 in parts total. The only complaint with the 360 was it got stuck in the same spot continuously. Although the back up valve kicked in every 3 minutes I'd find the 360 back near the steps, as if trying to escape. Hayward Pros: Works well, got the walls cleaner than both Polaris models, doesn't get stuck, spent $0 on maintenance those 8 months, uses the pools circulation pump which equals less energy - no booster pump required. Cons: Runs the entire 8-10 hour filtration cycle, makes a horrific sound in the middle of the night when it climbs up the wall and reaches the surface. ... show more

This is absolutely the best suction cleaner on the market. I have yet to find a pool that this thing will not clean. I've installed many of these in customers pools since before they were made by Hayward. Highly reccomend! if you get a lot of leaf/debris get an inline trap to save your pump basket.

    • Gearing changed to match Aquanaut - Only Lasts 2 1/2 Years

This is the best pool cleaner I have found, including the similar Hayward knock off model, Aquanaut, which doesn't seem to have the same turning gearing. I just purchased my fourth one. The first one lasted three years and I replaced the rubber "tires" on the wheels after a couple years. The next two only lasted about two half years before they broke. The way they all broke is that one of the large drive wheels came off, spilling its little ball bearings into the pool, and there's no way I could find to repair that. Update: I have now had this latest version a few weeks, and I discovered that it does not turn the same as the previous versions, and in fact has a different model number. I've verified with the manufacturer that it now uses the same gearing and steering cam as the Aquanaut, which is not as effective in my pool, as it tends to get stuck going back and forth between the same areas. Perhaps I can take the gears from one of the two previous original models I still have and put them in this new unit. The gears seemed to still be working fine on the old models, it was the wheel that came off. It's a shame they made this change. I have removed one star for this reason. (Or maybe easier, I have ordered replacement wheel bearings for my older unit, and if it works after putting those, and I will get new tires for it. ... show more
