When I ordered this I was thinking that it would be a bit larger than it actually is. It is a decent serviceable size if you're needing to be able to split kindling and smaller logs, say maybe 4 or 5 inches across, but if you're needing to split anything larger than that I am not sure that you would be able to fit it into the upper ring section to get it split effectively. It is a veery stable design and if you anchor it to another log or to the ground somehow with screws/bolts it isn't going to move around on you as you're using it. It is made of what appears to be some pretty decent iron and feels pretty sturdy. Because of its size it is lighter than I expected also but isn't flimsy by any means. I haven't had to split anything small enough to fit into this splitter as yet but am helping one of my neighbors with a couple of trees he had to get felled and willo be using it shortly for that. If anything profound happens I will update my post but as it stands I would recommend this to those who need to be able to split kindling and smaller logs. It would probably work veery well for someone that has a fireplace or woodstove and needs/wants a way to split wood near the stove without damaging the floor. Set a log in it and give it a couple of whacks with a heavy hammer. It's a good product, just wish it were a bit bigger.

Lighter/slightly less heavy duty than others but works. I like that the opening ring at the top is only a half ring allowing us to use and split larger pieces of wood, with still some support at top to hold/secure the wood. The metal seems slightly lighter/or less heavy duty than what you would find at a local hardware store but works fine. Overall I think I would order again.

The product was as pictured and described by the seller. It came quickly and was undamaged. The splitter seems to be pretty heavy duty and well-made. It seems sturdy and is very easy to use. We attached it to a stump piece for extra stability. It works really well to make bigger pieces of firewood into smaller kindling pieces. Not recommended as a main firewood splitter though. Definitely should only be used to create smaller kindling pieces.

I had been eyeing one of these devices for a while and finally ordered one. What I've read from other reviews rang true for me with this version - it worked very well for medium-to-large, DRY wood. It required much more effort for fresh cut wood. I don't think that is unique to this device - pretty much any way you split wood will requires more effort for fresh cut wood as it has more moisture binding it together. This splitter has holes to secure the base which will be helpful, but be aware that it does not come with any hardware. For testing, placed mine on the ground between two stacks of bricks. With medium to large rounds 12-18 inches worked well. I had some skinnier pieces and it didn't set well so i had to add another piece to hold it in place. Longer pieces were a bit awkward, so I'll need to cut those down before splitting. I found with the weight of the wood and a sledge hammer the edge easily got into the wood - I was worried the edge might be too dull but wasn't an issue for me. I was using a 4 lb sledge hammer which worked well to maneuver but also required some effort with multiple strikes, depending on the wood. I think a heavier sledge would work better for splitting in one strike. For what it is, the price seems a bit high, but it also effective and seems very sturdy - should serve its purpose for a long time to come.
