  • Works exactly like it is supposed to
The media could not be loaded. I have made homemade waffles for at least 30 years, and have gone through a number of waffle makers during that time. This includes a couple of different flip over models. I have also returned a few during that time because they did a horrible job no matter how you made the batter. A few months ago I decided to replace my waffle maker and opted to give the Hamilton Beach Flip Belgian Waffle Maker a shot. It looked sturdy, and I liked the large handle that you use for flipping the iron. Obviously you need to clean it before you use it, and glanced over the instructions before I used it, and saw that it suggested that you coat the two cooking surfaces with corn oil and run it through a heating process and let it cool down without batter to season them before you use it the first time. I did that, cleaned off the excess oil, wiped it down again, and gave it a shot. Now, and I mentioned I have used flip over irons before, and unlike traditional table top models, you need to make the batter a bit thinner, mix it better, and make sure you use a bit more vegetable oil in it. This helps the batter flow better to cover the surfaces, and to make a crispier waffle. The biggest challenge is finding the right amount of batter to add so it is not dripping out the sides every time while it cooks. Although this model has a nice removable tray to catch any over flow, it holds just over a half cup of batter to make a full well formed waffle. Pros: - Is a solid unit and works very consistently - Timer is pretty much spot on - green light goes off after you flip it, comes back on when the waffle is done - Flip and lid lock system works flawlessly - Temp/Color adjustment works very well - Pretty quick turn around to make the next waffle if you need too - Handle is easy to grip to flip and open the iron Cons: - Storage is the same size as in use - Power cord may be short depending on where you plan to use it - Could use a bigger overflow reservoir internally instead of just dripping out - Smaller waffle than some makers make ( could be a Pro for some people) Overall I like the waffle maker. I only use it to make one or two waffles at a time so it works perfect for me. Seems to be well make and does what it is meant to do. This is not a commercial waffle maker like you find at breakfast bar, but it is very nice for the price. ... show more

  • One of the best purchase we have ever made!
My husband bought me this waffle iron after years of dealing with a messy, almost uncleanable, and awkwardly bulky waffle maker that we just never got around to replacing. We really noticed the necessity for a change when we stayed a couple nights in a hotel and used the waffle maker they had there, which is very similar to this in structure but was made for hospitality use. I would have to say that this one is even better than the one we used at the hotel. I never really liked making waffles because it was so messy and hard to use but this waffle maker has made it unbelievably easy. I mix up my batter, plug it in and spray it with a light layer of ghee spray, when the light turns green I pour in the batter and flip. Within minutes I have an absolutely perfect waffle. The waffle iron even has a dial that you can turn for crispness. I enjoy a very crisp waffle and my children prefer soft, so this feature is one of those nice little additions that can make a product really great. One of my favorite things about the waffle maker is the very easy to clean drip tray. I’m going to be honest, I don’t have the steadiest of hands and I can easily make a mess with batter, but not only is the waffle maker it’s self easy to clean but the drip tray prevents any huge messes under the maker. I also like the versatility of the maker. I have used it to make grilled cheese sandwiches, which seem to be a food that couldn’t be any easier to make but this waffle maker does it and my kids love the way they look. As far as the aesthetics of the waffle maker, it’s a very sleek stainless steel with black accents. It fits on my counter easily and is very convenient to pick up or move. Overall this an absolutely great product for a great price. I couldn’t be happier with it and would purchase it ten times over. ... show more

  • Pretty Darned Good
I love Belgian Waffles on the weekend and I bought this to replace a Waring that had a meltdown. I loved the Waring in many ways, but I've had 2 that have failed now in exactly the same way (most of unit is metal except for plastic parts where it swivels and this is prone to catastrophic meltdown), so I've decided to try my luck with another brand. I haven't had this one long enough to see how it holds up over time. But right out of the box impressions and the first few uses look promising. It is a bit more compact in terms of counter space that it takes up, so if you leave it on counter and have a smaller kitchen that could be a plus. Construction is mostly metal, although there are some plastic parts. Looks like it is less likely to have the same Achilles Heel design flaw that Waring has because most of the parts that are in high heat area are metal. Operates well and the waffles have not been sticking or burning. I'm not convinced that the "ready" light is all that accurate, so I tend to check visually after a few minutes and develop a feel for how long it really takes at a certain setting. In my case, I only make one or two at a time, so it is no big deal to do it by "using the Force." If I were making a lot for a bigger group of people, I would get it down to a more exact science and come up with a time that I liked and then use a kitchen timer. But I would not rely on the built in ready light except as a very rough guide. The only thing I don't completely love about this guy is the deepness of the pockets. Not sure how to measure waffle height exactly, but the thickest part of the waffle height on my old Waring unit seemed like about 7/8" or so. The Hamilton Beach makes waffles that are a little thinner... maybe 1/2" or 5/8" at most on thickest part. Doesn't sound like much difference and they taste great, but in terms of presentation they are a bit less luxuriant looking. If you were ordering waffles out at a restaurant and comparing, the thicker waffles definitely have a premium gourmet sort of look.... the thinner ones that the HB makes look a little more "bargain breakfast counter" at first impression. As I say, they taste fine, just less visually appealing. Even so, they are thick enough to qualify as a Belgian style waffle in my opinion, they are not so thin that they look like cheap frozen waffles you throw in a toaster or anything that disappointing. Unit is easy to operate and clean. Hoping it holds up better than my experience with other brand. If it lasts, the price is right and it will be a good value. ... show more
