I bought the Hamilton Beach 2 Slice Extra Wide Slot Toaster thinking, “It’s a toaster. It toasts. How exciting can this get?” Oh, how wrong I was. This toaster has changed my mornings in ways I never thought possible. First off, the Extra Wide Slots. You want to toast a bagel? Done. A Texas-sized slice of sourdough? No problem. Leftover pancakes you’re pretending are bread? Toast away, my friend. This toaster doesn’t judge your carbohydrate choices; it welcomes them with open slots. Next, the Bagel Setting. I don’t know what dark sorcery Hamilton Beach conjured, but this setting makes bagels toastier on the cut side while leaving the outer crust soft and chewable. It’s like it understands bagels on a spiritual level. Then there’s the Toast Boost. Picture this: you’re groggily waiting for your toast, and BAM, it launches your bread high enough to land directly into your hand. No more fishing around for burnt fingertips. It’s a culinary catapult, and I’m here for it. The Shade Selector? A game-changer. You can go from “lightly warmed bread” to “crispy perfection” with the twist of a dial. Personally, I live on a steady diet of setting #4, but it’s nice to know there’s a #6 for when life gets wild. And let’s not overlook the Auto Shutoff. To begin, I have to say that this toaster is very basic, and I am glad I only paid $20 for it. For the price, one shouldn't have great expectations for a toaster - but I did think that it might be better than what it is. Don't get me wrong, if you are looking for a toaster that just toasts regular size bread (like the square size of wonder bread or something) then it would probably work just fine for you. I typically buy good quality bread like Dave's or Oroweat Multi Grain that are more rectangular in shape, and the slots are just a bit too short for the slices to fit - so I have to push the slices down after the lever is engaged. I wouldn't expect a toaster in this price range to have a sensing mechanism that would allow it to toast evenly, and this one doesn't. It seems stuck on the bagel setting, which one side inevitably comes out darker than the other. Depending on the bread that I buy I have to adjust the timer accordingly, which is expected. The feature works well and is consistent when keeping it at the same setting and using the same bread. It is useable, though I wish that I would have spent a bit more for a better-quality toaster. I am giving it four stars because it does toast and would probably suit someone who uses the more inexpensive "square shaped" bread or smaller slice bread. Just doesn't work well for the more rectangular types of bread. ... show more

This is the first Hamilton Beach item I have bought in over 20 years. Their line of appliances got a horrible name back in the '80's for poor quality. However, after reading all the reviews and doing my research this was the model of toaster that had all the bells and whistles I wanted and was the right price. Having used a toaster oven, then an air frier oven, my toast over the past several years has been rather dry since both types of toasters take up to 10 minutes to cook, drying the bread. I love eating toast cooked over an open flame, which crisps the outside, but leaves the inside warm and chewy. A toaster doesn't do it for me, so I frustration I went ahead and bought this toaster. Yes, the first slices of bread out are a little unevenly toasted, but I have noticed that when I use it for more than the original two slices, the next sets are perfect and it only takes about 2 minutes to cook, leaving the outside crispy and the inside soft, warm and chewy. I read the description, even went to the Hamilton Beach website to verify the "Bagel" option. I was looking for a toaster that shuts off part of the heating elements when toasting bagels so that only the cut side is toasted, this also works well for hamburger buns. The description both places didn't say whether this toaster shuts off part of the elements, only that it would make the cut side of bagels toasty and only warm the other side. Nope, it toasts both sides, all the bagel setting does is to increase the cycle time. This toaster also arrived with the lever jammed and at first did not want to push down to begin the toasting cycle. After several attempts of jiggling/wiggling the handle it finally did push down, however it would still get stuck about every other use. I only used the unit a total of 4 times before returning it after determining that it did NOT work as expected. The toast it made was however very evenly toasted and this toaster has a small countertop footprint. If you're just looking for a simple toaster that makes regular toast real well, this is a great choice. If you're looking for a true bagel toaster that will only toast once side, this is not the unit you want. ... show more

I just needed a simple toaster, nothing fancy, and this does the trick. Works well, looks nice, doesn’t take up too much space. It’s held up just fine for a month now. Works for my bagels when cut in half. The only reason I only gave it 4 stars is because it seems to get way too hot for anything anyone would want to eat if dialed up anywhere past the medium setting. We burned a few things figuring out that you don’t need to dial it up very far to get the job done. But now we know and we’re fine with it.
