    • Works alright, but definitely take several readings
As the instructions indicate, you should take several different readings before making a decision. I tested this meter when I first received it, sticking in into a pot that had moist soil (I had watered it 2 days prior). The soil was moist all the way through. At several different spots where I stuck the meter, the gauge pointed in the red zone, indicating it needs water. That was definitely not accurate. I finally found a few spots where it pointed to the green zone, which is in the middle. I really would have expected it to point to the blue "wet" zone every time, as the soil was moist through and through, so that was surprising. I'lll have to keep it in mind in the future when I'm testing the soil for real. But I am going to continue to use it, because I recently almost lost my dracaena to root rot. Hopefully this will help me to not overwater in the future! ... show more

    • Works But Seems Larger Than Necessary
This is a simple moisture meter that you stick in soil to gauge how moist it is. Mine came with a bent probe. At first, I thought it was the design, but comparing mine to other people's photos I came to the conclusion it bent in the mail. However, it was easy to bend back straight. But, minus a star for a probe material that bends so easily. The top is a huge green petal shape with very tiny numbering. I found that contrast to be much. They should make the top smaller and the numbers bigger. The probe itself takes a few seconds to get a reading, and I recommend taking a few readings per plant to get an average of how moist it is. You want to have accurate readings for the plants you care about the most so you can take proper care of them. The overall look is cute and the accuracy on my soil was all in line with how I expected them to be. Just a few design tweaks and this would've been a perfect meter. ... show more

If you have multiple plants, and are trying to keep them happy, you know how important water is. Don't let the soil dry out but don't give them too much water either. It's a careful balance that normally requires you to stick your finger in the soil and make a judgement call on what you think it needs. Well those days are over. Enter the GROWIT Soil Moisture Meter for Plants. At first, I was thinking I would need to have several of these but that isn't the case. You can quickly and easily move it between plants and get a fast reading. It's not like waiting for a thermometer - you get an instant reading and you can move on to the next. Get yourself one of these and never wonder again what is going on under the surface of the plant. My favorite part is that there are no batteries required. The geek in me wonders how it works. Seems to work just fine out of the box with an easy-to-read gauge. Instructions for use are on the box with a stern warning NOT to insert the probe in water--which I was tempted to do to be honest. They recommend inserting the probe in a couple of spots to get a more accurate reading. I am not the owner of a green thumb so I need all the help I can get. I already use watering bulbs for my indoor plants and I'm hoping this moisture meter will also help to keep my plants alive and looking good. ... show more

    • It works — that's all you need to know
Look, this kind of moisture meter is all over the place, so there's one thing that matters: Does it work? This does. You're not looking at the molecular level here, you just want to know if you need to water your plant, and this does that job. Is it better or worse than the others? I tested it briefly in wet, dry, and damp soil, and it read what I expected it to, so all I can say is that it works, which I can't say about other brands. ... show more

The instructions tell you to test it first with soil that was watered a couple of hours ago. I watered the plant, or so I thought, and waited a couple of hours. I went in to test the soil meter and it read low moisture, so now I know that I need to water more than I have been. Handy tool.

I have had other moisture meters, but none of them have ever worked as well as this one does. I am so impressed with a meter that needs no batteries. This will help you water your plants just enough. I followed the instructions on the box, and it seems to be working just fine. The box also gives you the proper ranges for a variety of plants so take note of that information before you throw away the box. It also comes with 15 plant tags.
