  • Very good value.
So this was my first bevel down hand plane and I will say that I'm pretty darn happy with it. I could not give it five stars though for a couple things that were initially cons that through learning have become no big deals and also helped me learn. Cons- 1. My lateral adjustment on this doesn't really work as the tab that engages with the blade is bent down at an angle and does not really engage. I am not sure if it came this way or I did it but placing the blade in improperly and pressed it down. I would have tried to bend it back but honestly I couldn't see how as there wasn't really any room to work and I didn't want to break it. Not a huge deal as I've learned to just adjust it by hand when setting up or with very slight taps to get it where it needs to be. 2. The blade is a bit thin/soft and needs regular sharpening. I've been able to get this blade very very sharp and I softened the corners up very very slightly . I've mostly used soft woods and it works wonderfully, however hit any kind of knot and it dulled or got a nick in the edge. So I am regularly pulling it apart to sharpen. Some people would be annoyed with this but I wasn't very good at sharpening and now it is no big deal and takes no real time to get a keen edge on it. Was a bummer at first but forced me to learn a valuable skill in the meantime. Pros- Flat sole, good quality, very good price and affordable compared to even used beat down ebay specials that I would need to restore myself, I use this thing all the time and don't regret the purchase. It also feels good in the hands so that is always a plus with hand tools. Eventually I will get a better blade for it but for now this tool does the job just fine. ... show more

  • Solid
Takes some time to adjust and get used to however once you find the right adjustment it works just as good as other more expensive options would...

  • A significant amount of sweat equity is required to get this plane up and running.
First ordered this plane, was new in box, broke it down to clean it, discovered the lateral lever and iron were bent badly, like it had been dropped upside down from up high. Returned that and ordered a replacement, no big deal other than a hit to the schedule. New plane came in and looked decent at first glance. Understand that any new plane needs some kind of preparation before first use. The opening, comes in a plastic bag in the box, full of oil and dirt, metal and wood shavings. Wiping it down and taking it apart for inspection and preparation: ~1hr The Sole: Every where it should have been flat; toe, before and aft of the mouth and the heal were all concave. Pretty much opposite of what it should be. This required flattening the ENTIRE sole. 5 sheets of 60 grit, 1 sheet of 100 grit, 3 sheets of 120 grit. ~7-9hrs spent flattening the sole. The Frog: decent shape, but needed to be flattened on the face and underside where it marries to the sole. Very uneven milling marks. Time to flatten ~:1.5hrs Mechanically, the lateral lever and depth adjuster mechanisms were in good enough working order, no adjustment needed. The sole where the frog sits had uneven surface milling. you will need a small file. Near the mouth where the toes of the frog sit has very uneven milling. I was unable to flatten that, no sandpaper will fix it within a reasonable amount of time and using a dremel tool would be asking for trouble. Not the end of the world here. Time spent ~45min The iron: surprising flat. Quality steel. Because it was so flat, it took ~ 30min to sharpen to where it will shave arm hair. The chip breaker: Disaster here, not flat, but not warped, subtle bend in it. Pretty much rests on the back edge of the knife cut, exact opposite of what is needed. - Still working through this bit. The blade and chip breaker appear to be quality steel and they take awhile to grind. Time grinding chip breaker ~1.5hrs and counting. Use: In-spite of the issue with the chip breaker, I was able to get medium-light and light shavings with it. actually very happy in that regard, Makes that great sound when cutting. That is, until the chip breaker gets clogged. Eventually the chip breaker issue will get sorted. It will just take some time as the steel is tough, which isn't a bad thing. Handle and tote: Fair condition no splinters, slight hole in the handle. Zero time spent After ~2 weeks there is rust on the sides of the plane but not on the sole. Summary: It's probably worth the price if you are semi new to woodworking or are on a tight budget and know how to tune a plane and can trade time for money. There is value here for those new to woodworking to learn how to to tune the plane and how all the parts work together. Once you get this plane up and running, I doubt it will perform any less than a top of the line plane. Significant Con: I tried to get a replacement matched iron and chip breaker from pinnacle to use for smoothing and turn the set it came with into a scrub set, the set was too thick to fit. This means the other options are possibly Hock or straight from Stanley. The guy at the local woodshop said that's a common problem with some of the smaller cheap plane producers. It may be cheaper to just order another #5 just for the iron set and have for spare parts. ... show more

  • Greatly exceeded expectations
I watched an evaluation of this plane by Rex Kruger on Youtube. The quality of reasonably priced hand tools has decreased dramatically in recent decade. I have returned a number of items because of various performance issues. Most wood workers have resorted to refurbishing old planes or buying very expensive items. On the basis of Rex's evaluation, I decided to give this one a try. As you can tell by my rating I am delighted with the results. As with any new tool you will need to do a tune up before you use it, if not you will be disappointed. First I checked that the sides were square to the base. Perfect. Next I degreased it and flattened the sole with 120 grit sand paper. Then I sharpened and stropped the blade. I didn't mess with the cap iron. A light coat of oil on the exposed metal parts and reassembly. I tested it on pine, oak and walnut. Works beautifully giving very fine shavings. I then used it to "rough flatten and edge" 20, 6 x 40 inch 5/4 walnut boards (I do not own a jointer). At the end of this work the blade is still sharp. So, if you will excuse me, I have a number of walnut boards that need to be prepped... ... show more
