🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The GreenWorks line trimmer seems to be highly effective and powerful, able to cut through dense vegetation with ease. Users appreciate its electric power, eliminating the need for fuel mixtures and making startup much easier. The trimmer tends to be lighter and more balanced than other models. However, the battery life could be improved for heavy use, and changing the spool has been noted to be the minor annoyance.

Pros

  • 🌿 Robust and powerful, capable of slicing through thick vegetation
  • 🔋 Operates on electricity, eliminating the need for gas and oil mixtures
  • ⚖️ Lightweight and well-balanced for comfortable use
  • 🔄 Recharging is relatively quick, especially with a spare battery

Cons

  • 🔌 Battery life might not be sufficient for heavier tasks
  • 🔄 Changing the spool can be a bit tricky
  • 💨 The non-variable speed might consume the string faster
  • 🔄 Single battery performance might be insufficient for larger properties

Should I Buy It?

If you have a larger property with rough vegetation, GreenWorks line trimmer could be an excellent investment. It stands out for its powerful performance, electric operation, and lightweight design. However, for best comfort, consider having an extra battery to cover any potential longevity issues.

  • By far the best string trimmer you're gonna find in it's price range, gas or electric.
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
There are 2 model numbers for this listing, this review is for ST80L210. Had a Echo SRM-210 straight shaft string trimmer with a double .095" line bump head. After 10 years the carb was giving problems, replaced the carb, still has issues. Did well for a decade, but it's time has come. Started researching string trimmers and see the cordless models have really upped their game since last time I shopped for a string trimmer. High amp lithium batteries, double line bump heads, brushless motors. Reviews looked good on this Greenworks so I thought I'd give it a try. Got it, charged the battery, and gave it a test run. I'm quite impressed with the power, stronger than any other string trimmer in its price range, electric or gas. It outperforms gas models that are a curved shaft, and use .080" or smaller lines. Typically the entry level gas string trimmers run $80 - $120. It DOES NOT have the power that my old Echo had while running .095" line, especially when edging, but a comparable Echo today will run $200+. Maybe it's the .080" lines just don't cut as well as the .095", especially when edging. The Greenwoorks seems like it has the power to handle the .095" line, but it's not recommended in the owners manual. Small bugs are "reverse rotation" vs. gas straight shaft string trimmers, and the safety button can be a pain to push in every time you restart the string trimmer. There is also a small delay in "throttle response" from not running. Weight/balance/overall build quality is excellent. Bump head works well, battery life is enough for my typical suburban lot, edging included. Never again will I buy another gas string trimmer, electric technology is now primetime. Update: Wrote the review after doing the front yard, started the back yard and ran out of string. Not sure if it comes with a "starter roll" or it just eats up string really fast. Went to reload with some .095" I had left from over from my Echo. But it wasn't .095", it was .105". The review I wrote was more skewed based on line size than I thought. Wanted to finish the back yard, so I threw some .105" line on there. 105" line is thick and stiff, it doesn't fit well on the relatively small Greenworks spindle (Echo spindle was huge by comparison). Changed the default 14" cutting swath to 16", cranked up the Greenworks with the thicker line, it's a completely different tool. With the thicker line it DOES have the power that my Echo did, yes the FULL POWER of the Echo. I dunno what magic Greenworks is doing with the small brushless motor on the head and 80V battery, but it WORKS. The .105" is really too think to feed properly in the relatively small Greenworks reel, so I'm gonna pick up some standard .095" line that the manufacturer says it's rated to handle. Greenworks string trimmer review changed to 5 stars, HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY !!! ... show more

  • Shockingly good! Highly worth a try!
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
***UPDATE*** June 2019 Weed eater is still working great as is the battery and charger. Next week I'm ordering a second battery. Our tall teens are both able to operate it safely and with the .095 line it does chew through even blackberries - although the battery will need charged much faster if you go through heavy stuff. We've used it on the edges of our house, in our overgrown orchard for the first mowing in the spring, and all over farm fields, and it is amazing. We found winding our own reels easy with the manual directions. Very happy with the purchase still and highly recommend! Also recommend getting the strap - it is really necessary and again wished it came with one. May 2018 This is amazing! We have been using this weedeater on tall (two foot or more) grasses and weeds in our orchard. It eats through the grass without stopping! Lasts a full hour plus even with the heavy growth. The included string has lasted for about 5 hours so far . . . but I purchased more on amazon to refill - both the .080 and the .095 (not recommended, but works also from what reviews have said - with the .095 on it we are going to try it on blackberries and see how it does. We've just used it on softer grasses/weeds - but thick tall ones with the included .080 line). Battery charges in 30 minutes. After an hour of weed eating everyone is fine with a little 30 minute break. We may buy a second battery (only the Greenworks 80V will work in this machine) just in case we have a big project - a second battery would let you trim pretty much continuously if you had one charging while using the other. Everyone who uses it is impressed at how much power it has and how long the battery lasts. It is exactly what we were hoping for when we bought it. No more messing with mixing fuel, poor starting, fumes, and winter storage/maintenance that our old gas model required. We love that the battery can be used in other equipment such as their pressure washer and chainsaw -- this has impressed us so much that we will probably be adding more of the greenworks tools to our farm. Buy a shoulder strap or harness to help with the weight. I'm not sure why they don't sell one with it or as an add on. We bought one off of amazon with webbing - works great. The battery is well balanced at the end of the machine, but it does weigh heavy especially after using it for awhile . . . Eye protection is a must - it sprays chopped weeds of course, so long pants and long sleeves/gloves are good - but that is true with most if not all string trimmers. NOTES: Might not be useful for shorter people or less strong people. We are all fairly tall and love it, but relatives that are not find it heavy and awkward. It is possible that other electric weed eaters spray less grass, but we wanted one that had the power to eat through our tall grass on our farm, and this one does! ... show more

  • This beast has the power to tackle a 1/4 acre lawn on a single charge, including edging.
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
I used to own a Stihl FS95 line trimmer. It was a very nice machine. It would wack pretty much any weeds I threw at it, and it started right away every time. We moved in to a home with a bit smaller garage, and I did not want to store all the stinky fuel cans and stuff, so I was able to sell my 3 year old string trimmer for a little less than the original cost. Stihl is a brand that really holds its value. I hired a lawn service to do my yard, and never looked back. Until.......they raised the rates, and started to infrequently. I was needing to make a change. My lawn looked terrible half the time. Grass was either too long, or cut too short after growing too long, and leaving piles of debris. Not wanting to get back in to gas trimmers and mowers, it seemed my best option was a robot lawn mower. No fuel to store, and stink up the garage, and the mower it's self lives outdoors. This preserves precious garage space for other things. The Worx Landroid WORX WG794 28-volt Landroid Robotic Lawn Mower does a great job of keeping my grass trimmed. But it has limitations near obstacles. So a string trimmer was needed for edging, and trimming near the house and landscaping. I wanted to stick with electric power, so I reviewed the options. Then Amazon offered a great daily deal on this Greenworks, and Amazon has a great satisfaction guarantee, so I figured what can it hurt. Now I have been burnt by cordless string trimmers in the past that looked great on infomercials (I am looking at you Worx, yes I gave them another shot on the robot, and I am pleased with that). I way underestimated this Greenworks trimmer. I figured there would be some compromise between my FS95 and any electric trimmer. Sure enough the trimmer line is .8 rather than .95. But that is where the compromises stop. This trimmer cuts every weed in my yard with no complaints. I even use it as a mower for the narrow space between my sidewalk and the street. It has a 16 inch cutting path (looks more like 12, but still), and it handles that task with simple ease. I also use it to edge my property, around my patio, drive, and sidewalks. I have around 200 feet of edging. I am able to trim my entire quarter acre property, and edge everything on a single charge. I then throw my battery on the charge and have a cool glass of water. 30 minutes later I have enough juice to use the Greenworks blower https://www.amazon.com/GreenWorks-Battery-Charger-Included-BL80L00/dp/B01N34HYZV/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1507662762&sr=8-5&keywords=80+volt+greenworks+blower, which I bought as a bare tool, to share a battery and charger with the trimmer. There is a small con, there is a learning curve to winding the line spool. You must pull out double the amount of line you need and fold it in half. Lock the bend in the the notch in the middle of the spool, and wind it clockwise. Once you wind the trimmer line a time or two, it is old hat. I was really impressed with the power of this string trimmer. It is perfect for my needs, takes up relatively little space, and uses a powerful, and multipurpose 80 volt battery, that charges very quickly. ... show more

  • Excellent Performance some Minor Flaws
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
Overall this is an excellent trimmer that cuts well with a decent battery life c. 30 minutes. Struggles a bit with really large brambles and small saplings but given the line diameter (0.08ins) is about as good as one can expect. It is let down a little by an inconvenient and fiddly way one has to reload line but at least once loaded the bump feed works well which is not the case for many strimmers. One unfortunate aspect of reloading is that if the line is too long, the motor cuts out after the line hits the cut off blade. That does not happen when one bumps the head to extend the line when the motor is already running so I can only assume it's an overload cut-out built into the motor control circuitry. Irritating but not a show stopper - just carry snips to trim the line manually before restarting. ... show more

  • It is an excellent product for what it is and I would recommend ...
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
I'd been shopping for a battery operated bladed brush trimmer for a while and after confirming with Greenworks customer service that this item was compatible with split shaft accessories, I purchased this one. I was very impressed with the power of the unit and the charge time but, unfortunately, their was some confusion on their part about this unit. IT IS NOT SPLIT SHAFT COMPATIBLE. By putting the motor directly at the end of the shaft with the trimmer head the unit is well balanced and battery life is increased by eliminating the shaft and gearing necessary for split shaft compatibility. It is an excellent product for what it is and I would recommend it whole-heartedly to anyone who needs a string trimmer only. I can also say that Greenworks has excellent customer service. When they realized the mix-up they sent me the correct item at no extra charge even though it is actually slightly more expensive. Now that I've received the correct one (model - GST80321) I am extremely happy with it. With the split shaft brush cutter attachment (TrimmerPlus BC720) and Renegade Blade carbide weedeater blade attached it is exactly what I was looking for. A relatively quiet, simple to operate brush killer. I use it to build trails through scrub oak, poison oak and wooded areas. It mows down weeds and anything up to a couple inches around as quick as you can look at it and saws through trees and limbs with ease. I got about an hour of use from one battery including setting it down and picking up the rake between cuts and moving from place to place. Probably about half that was actual cutting time but I accomplished in an hour what would normally take a day with hand tools and power did not seem to decrease with battery charge, it just stopped working when the battery died. I have another battery on the way because I work far away from electrical outlets, otherwise the half hour charge time would be sufficient to keep working continuously with half hour breaks for clearing while it recharges. FYI, Greenworks did caution not to use the blade attachment for extended periods, i assume this may overheat the motor. ... show more

  • Frustrating to use. I wish the string would advance and the motor was more durable.
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
I got this because I have the 80v mower and leaf blower so I figured keep all the tools using the same batteries. It has a powerful motor but thats about it. The string never feeds. I have to constantly take the head apart and do it myself. The head is difficult to take apart and snap on. It takes just as long to do all the edge and detail work as it takes to mow my lawn with 3 80v greenworks batteries. When I do have enough string advanced, I'm lucky if it lasts 24 inches. It wears down so fast that theres only an inch or so of string hanging out and that barely cuts anything, or you have to be so close and move so slow along the edge of a sidewalk. I never had that problem with my old 40v Black and Decker trimmer. If I try to edge flower beds, the string is gone in seconds. I get maybe 4 to 5 inches along and all the string is worn away already. Since the string doesn't advance I have to stop and take apart the entire head to advance it. Oh and don't advance too much either! IF you have too much string out, the motor senses this and just stops. Have to take the battery out and put it back in, and maybe im lucky and it will start up, or maybe it will attempt to start and just stop when the excess string hits the guard. So I have to either take the head apart and put string back in, or cut it with scissors. I'm also using .080 red string line. The larger stuff like .095 is too heavy, that will stall the motor out even worse. I wish I could use heavy duty string because the lower stuff is worn away in only a few inches. The mower and the blower are great. This string trimmer? The most frustrating tool I own. I wish the string would just advance itself! I wish the string would last longer! I wish there was a way to defeat the issue where the motor stops when it detects extra long string hitting the guard or heavy duty string being used. Longer string makes edging SO much more effective, easier and faster, but you can't have a long string with this or it stalls out. ... show more

I've had this a couple of months. So far it's great. The battery life is longer than I want to work in one session. If you had 2 batteries you could probably cycle between them and never stop. • This is what you want
Size: 16" Brushless - Gen 1 (2.0Ah) Color: Silver, Black, Green
This thing is fantastic and exceeded all my expectations. It's fully a professional device even though not recommended for professional use, according to the warranty. Light, well balanced, rugged and very easy to use. I get about 45 minutes of runtime on a 30 minute charge and I don't run the batteries all the way down, mainly because, regardless of what they say, running a rechargable battery flad, with the exceptopn of nicads, isn't a good idea. Internal heat of the battery being the critical factor. But a steady full power run of 45 minutes from a full charge works just fine. Besides, a 45 minute workout with a 30 minute break is great and you can do something else for that 30 minutes that is productive. Buy the replacement string for this unit and don't go with a different manufacturer. This string is strong and has a great wear factor. The greatest thing is that it starts instantly and there is no mixing of oil and gasoline. It's as powerful as any gasoline machine I have ever used. Again, follow the directions BEFORE you use it and start off with a full charge. Invairably that's what get people in trouble, because they don't read and follow the directions. Replacement batteries are pricey but that should come down as the technology improves. Sertainly cheaper than replaceing a gasoline rig that has less power and got burnt up because the fuel mix was wrong, one time. ... show more
