  • Works well with Google Home and Assistant but tricky to set up.
Many years ago, I used to buy X10 modules to remote control various electric devices in my house. They were great and worked well. However, their capabilities were very limited – essentially on/off or dim from a hand-held switch (which I often mislaid). Programmer boxes could be bought for extra cost but were difficult to use. X10 also seemed to miss the internet aspect of the smart home. Wind forward about 20 years and we now have Alexa and Google Assistant that can control almost anything that accepts electricity. These smart socket modules from GNCC come in a pack of 4 for just over $20 – which are far cheaper than the limited X10 alternatives but will do a lot more. Setting up was a bit tricky. I have a 3-band router and an exterior repeater which means that there are 4 ways of connecting to WiFi in my house – two use 2.4GHz and two use 5GHz. This apparently was too much for these little smart sockets and I had to mess around with my router settings before a connection became possible. I used an iPad to download and setup the necessary app from Osaio. Once this was installed, it had trouble finding a WiFi connection but leaving the app and then reloading it seemed to work and eventually I had all four of the smart sockets set up and working. Linking them to Google Home was easy. Now I have the power to turn these sockets on or off manually or by voice (note that you have to configure them as a ‘light’ for voice commands to work) from anywhere in the world or set up a schedule to turn them on or off at certain times, when it gets dark or light, when another device has an event, etc. etc. Note that there is a 10A limit on these sockets – so no heaters or AC units allowed. I was a bit worried that plugging one of these sockets into a standard dual-gang mains outlet would obscure the second socket. This is not the case (see photo) but it’s not possible to plug in a second one next to the first. These are cheap, reliable and very powerful – but a bit tricky to set up. ... show more

  • Pain in the backside to set up, but work great now that they are
These are not my first smart plug. I have these plugs (and outlets and switches) all over my house, and my mom's, so I've set up my fair share. These did NOT want to connect for the longest time. Yes, I made sure we were on 2.4ghz not 5. I did finally manage to get them set up in the app using the manual add option, and that worked fine. Now that they are set up I haven't had any issues with them. I use them for timers on my lights in my office, and the timer is very punctual. So I'm happy with them. I just wish they would have connected more easily. ... show more

  • Easier to set up than a dedicated Amazon plug.
A couple Amazon-Day's ago, there was an Amazon-branded Alexa-enabled plug for sale for under $20, so I thought I'd give it a try. I struggled for an hour to get the darn thing to work with my Echo, even with the plug in the same room as the Echo. After a very frustrating hour, things connected and the plug has worked flawlessly ever since. But due to that horrible experience, I've shied away from third-party devices that advertise being able to connect to Alexa's superpowers. Especially since they were much less than half the price of the Amazon device, I could only imagine they'd be a complete nightmare to configure. This product proved I was wrong. The box arrived with 4 devices. They look smart. The small instruction manual was quite clear on how to set things up which required downloading a smartphone app that helped me connect the device to my wireless internet (HUGE caveat - this specific device only works with 2.4GHz internet). From there, it interfaces with the Echo via Alexa's Skills. This is the secret-sauce...while the Amazon device connects directly to Alexa (which caused so much of a headache), this device connects to the router, to which Alexa is already connected. The phone app was in the Google store, so I didn't have to download a non-trusted app. Alexa's skills had this company in its database. Everything connected in 5 minutes of downloads and easy configuration. Painless. Having the devices connected to the wireless router also extends their range over the true Amazon device. I have the device completely across the house from the router and in a different room from my Echo it works just fine. Now if I can only get my partner to trust Alexa, I would install the other three devices in a heartbeat (she doesn't like telling Alexa to do things). Instead, I've only placed one on my bedside light for me and Alexa to control. Since I've only had the device for 2 weeks, I can't speak to longevity, so I'll try to pop back in here later to follow-up. But suffice it to say, I was quite pleased how easy setting up this device was. Just be sure your internet supports 2.4GHz connections. ... show more

  • challenging set up but does work!
It was a little challenging to set it up on the app. The instructions tell you to use a certain wifi that was listed, but it wouldn't come up nor did we need it to set up the plug in the app and link it to Alexa. Other than that, it was pretty easy to set up. I do love that it comes with a pack of 4. Not bad for the price. ... show more
